Phil Foden - What Is His Potential?

If pundits like Gary Neville and Micah Richards didn’t go on about Foden to the degree they do this thread would probably be smaller. But people listen, people in this thread have listened constantly for years about how incredible and magnificent at everything Phil Foden is and the simple fact is he just isn’t. Absolutely not a generational talent and was absolutely never going to be Englands most important player this Euros. I understand Richards cos he played for city and is mates with Foden but can’t quite work it out with Neville. I know he loves the occasional city loving but still.

Neville fawns over anything to do with City. Probably wants on the payroll, if he isn’t already.

Olmo for Spain.

Have to find a way to get Foden playing like that for England on a consistent basis.

You know whats funny, Olmo isnt a starter in that team, he started because Pedri got injured.

Foden isnt creative enough for the role he wants to play.

Bit of the Raheem Sterling about him.
This popped into my head during the game last night as we've all seen how poor Sterling looks since he left City. I think we'd see a similar drop off from Foden if he moved to any other club where the manager's tactics don't consist of recycling possession in the final third.

Thats because Spain don’t look to cram names into a team. They are happy and bold enough to have top players on the bench and only play them in a suitable position.

He's been such a bitter disappointment at international level. For someone who looks so good at club level, how little its translated to how he plays for England is staggering. It's like they're not even the same person.

3 goals in 41 games for England.

"must build the side around him"
Iniesta had 11 in 131 for Spain, sort of a similar goal per appearance ratio.

Obviously Iniesta was a FAR better player, but probably not the best metric to judge Foden by?
Iniesta also played sort of in a similar position for Spain.

Bernardo Silva looks far better for City than he does for Portugal, De Bruyne as well, Gvardiol and Kovacic were terrible for Croatia in the Euros.

Better players have performed as poorly for country. God, Rooney was always pretty lacklustre in the tournaments.

De Bruyne was bad in this Euro just as the whole Belgium team. Kovačić wasnt that bad, the best of the bad bunch if anything. Thing is, Spanish players looked good cause they had a system and werent throw in the team for the sake of it, unlike England and Croatia whose coach didnt have an idea how to play and what does he want from the team.

I mean, sure but he got zero assist and goals in 7 games.

Olmo and Foden are actually very similar players. The problem with England is what do you do with Bellingham(and Palmer) to get Foden playing that role? Also england don't have Rodri and Fabian, which is an issue too

There's also Kane but I figure that can be solved with coaching

Completely different players, playing completely different roles. Iniesta's main contributions to his team were as a penetrative dribbler/playmaker - similar to Saka, or Lamine Yamal. Foden is a goalscorer. If he isn't scoring, what's the point of him?

Crikey, 2 goals in his last 38 international appearances. That’s some return from a generational talent.

It's not his fault. You want to pin the blame on someone. Blame it on Southgate.

I would say most if not all EPl players played far better in league than in Euro 24.

A quote from elsewhere. In a month's time Foden will score a hattrick against Ipswich Town and all pundits will talk him up again as the best and most talented English player since Wayne Rooney.

You can bet your life's wages on this. But we'll remember mr. 007 and calls to "build the team round him"

Saka is about twice the player for England than Foden is. For all the excuses made, that tells you it isn’t all down to the NT which really isn’t the broken mess it was before Southgate took over.

Once when he was 18 and an unknown entity on the global stage. He never repeated it. But when he was a more established player with a lot more responsibility he folded constantly.

He was pretty injured for at least two of the tournaments in fairness.
We used to routinely rush players back only to see them under perform.
Beckham with his metatarsal another.

Amazing potential. Magnificent player. This is the type of player every club dreams of. Him haaland Declan rice palmer are the future of the Premier league. These guys will shine for years to come

I think this had a lot to do with him being a pretty unprofessional pisshead whenever the season ended who routinely turned up to tournaments like he'd been on the beer for 2 weeks, which he probably had been. Also some unlucky timing with bad managers and injuries (Injured going into 2006 WC, Schteve, Capello's disastrous 2010 tournament a couple months after he'd been rushed back from injury for us, Hodgson in 2012). By the time 2014 rolled around he was on the decline as a player and playing in a much worse team. Of course he should have a better tournament record but I'd say if Rooney had emerged 10 years later than he had he'd have Kane's goal record and then some in a much more functional team, he was a better player. 04 was the best team Rooney played with at a tournament with only maybe 06 pushing it, by 2010 a lot of the big names were on the decline.

Met this guy today. He parked outside my work in Stockport in his green Audi. Needs to learn how to park though. Took him about 15 mins.

The 'generational talent' is nowhere to be seen in the starting lineup for City's biggest game of the season. Hopefully the England manager follows suit at the next international tournament.

Hopefully Redknapp will be on air to tell everyone that Pep and Foden have fallen out.

Must have been a massive bust-up. Should found out more on the front and back pages tomorrow.

He hasn’t had much of a chance to be fair - has he done something to upset Pep?

I just don’t think he’s all that.

City make him look a lot better than he is due to their system and the players around him.

Said this 2 years ago and stand by it.

Swap him and Palmer, and Palmer would flourish. Foden would be meh at Chelsea.

Weirdly, I think he's been stunted by only ever playing for guardiola.

He seems to have no idea how to impose himself on a game. Without the well oiled passing machine around him to create openings for him, he's lost.

Thought so too at first but now I think it might just be him. He's just not as eclectic a talent as people thought he was
