Hanley's assault on him was a clear red.

That's much worse than I remember. As you say, it's a clear red, absolutely no reason to lead with your elbow like that.

I love Scholes' reaction though, he just brushed it off.

Can you imagine Suarez? Or Perch? :-)

That was fecking terrible. I'm surprised no one on the pitch seemed to notice how bad it really was. Probably because Scholes didn't make a meal of it.

They can't, well they could if they wanted to, as Webb saw it and gave a yellow.

Did Webb see the elbow or the tackle though? Either way nothing will happen unless the media whip up a storm. Which they won't.

I know he's not played loads but he seems to be fitter now then he was after 12 games or so last season, where he started superbly and then faded. He was making a lot of runs into the box as well as being able to get back. Hoopefully if he does sign again we can manage his games better and give him some longer breaks as he's clearly capable of finding his game quickly.

I seem to remember Webb being close to it. However I don't think he saw the elbow, as if he did it surely would have been a straight red, and I don't think any of the players did either. Scholes reaction of just getting on with it probably did Hanley a favour as well.

1 - Man Utd had the 6th best PL pass completion between Aug & P Scholes' return (84%), but are top in the period since then (87%). Control.

Back with a bang.

Yep, and according to twitter

31 points from the 33 available in games he has played

Shame I've already done the quoting of shame

27 of 27 in the games he's started, in the EPL. He came on for the draw with Chelsea, where he helped engineer an amazing comeback from 0-3. That should hardly count against him!

Manchester United veteran Paul Scholes is happy he is not watching the Premier League title race unfold away from the pitch, conceding that "coaching was OK but it wasn't anything like playing".

Scholes, 37, retired from playing last summer only to make a dramatic U-turn on his decision in January, when United were struggling to chase down Manchester City.

The former England international has since played an infleuntial role as Sir Alex Ferguson's side have gone on an 11-game unbeaten run to open up a five-point gap over City and move to the brink of a record-extending 20th league title.

It could have been very different for both United and Scholes had he not returned and the midfielder admits he is relieved to be involved again having helped coach the club's youth players in the first half of the campaign.

"The coaching was OK but it wasn't anything like playing,'' Scholes told MUTV. "I was still coming in every day and seeing players. It was difficult to adjust, I admit that.

"I really missed the playing side up until Christmas, when I went to see the manager.''

Scholes can already boast ten Premier League winners' medals but he is just as desperate to claim an 11th as he was the first and is delighted with the way the title race has unfolded.

"You would have snatched someone's hand off for this position a couple of months ago,'' he said. "We have put ourselves in a decent position but there is still a long way to go.

"We are going up against a very good team in City. They have had a fantastic season and they have a great squad of players that is capable of beating anybody.

"They can go on runs and win games and are capable of winning at Arsenal. But with this five-point lead we just have to concentrate on ourselves.'

He doesnt.. I love him, but that is silly

Honestly speaking who does deserve it if not Scholesy? Van Persie perhaps? I mean I think its very fair to say that had Scholes not come back we wouldn't be top. We had virtually no midfield at the time and average sides were steamrolling us in the middle through little more than getting up close and personal.

Since Scholes returned we've looked so much better and considering he spent 6 months in retirement before that the impact on our side is even more shocking. Compare his return to that of say Tevez who was out of the game for a similar amount of time and the fact Scholes was able to pick up where he left of so effectively looks even more startling.

Scholes return was the catalyst in our run of form which has led us to 1st in the league and if we win the title that should be recognised. Sincerely speaking only Van Persie can say through his work alone his side is where they are this season.

There is a long list of players who have had a better season than Scholes.
He was our catalyst... doesnt mean he has been the best player in the league this season.

We had virtually no midfield at the time and average sides were steamrolling us in the middle through little more than getting up close and personal.

In a season which started with great stuff from Anderson and Clevelrey (even though it wasn't a balanced duo), only for injuries to hit them both; and continued with Jones and Carrick looking good together in the middle ahead of Christmas, only for Jones to suffer injuries and lose form, Scholes comeback has been important, no question.

He has added a dimension we didn't have for most of the season. A player who is a combination of Carrick and Giggs - one who can pass and pass and pass without taking huge risks, but also spot the big pass forward that could create a chance.

I'm not sure I agree about us being steamrolled in midfield ahead of his return, though. It hasn't happened this season anything like last season, when we had Scholes for the entire year. And since Scholes came back we certainly had a couple of away matches that reminded me of last season, such as Norwich and Tottenham, where we won despite struggling for grip in midfield.

I had thought that the league was lost, city was running away with it, until scholes came back.

That's the impact he has made - he's the difference between us being contenders for the title and potentially city running away with it..

Just that one player turned us from fighting for second place to fighting for the title.

Just my opinion, of course. We need to sign a midfielder

Scholes has been great no doubt but there are other factors. Firstly for me part of the problem we were having in the midfield from the first part of the season is that we had no consistentcy there. Players were constantly getting injured or we had to shuffle things cause of injuries to the back. Since scholes returned we've constantly had two midfielders in him and carrick who were an established partnership and both stayed fit. As good as scholes has been I think if we'd had, had fletcher fit all season as well we would also be top and probably still in europe.

Talking about injuries in this second half of the season we've had a lot less problems. In attack we've had a core of players stay fit and a number of players have found form like Valenciai and Rooney and more importantly at the back we've had far more consistentcy which has undoubtedly helped stabilise us.

Scholes has been excellent since he returned and I'm loving every minute he's played but for me other players such as carrick, Evans/rio, Valencia have had more important roles. I also don't think scholes's impact doesn't suggest that our midfield is weak but more the difference in having two proper midfielders constantly together as opposed to having to rely on a park or a jones in the middle.

I honestly think timing is affecting people's judgement here. Scholes came back right after we lost to Blackburn and Newcastle, when things didn't look good for us (just after we stringed a few good wins ahead of christmas). The response came from the entire team.

Scholes has obviously added to it, but I wouldn't say it's about 'that one player'. It's also about De Gea and Evans giving us defensive stability again, Carrick's newly found consistency, Valencia's brilliance over a period now, among others.

I don't care what anybody says about it but I want Scholes in the Euros this summer.

Is Carricks consistency not down to havingScholesy beside him though?

He has been brilliant again today. His passing has been almost flawless today, and it hasn't just been simply side passes. He's attempted plenty of difficult cross field balls which aren't easy to pull off and most of them have been successful.

His goal really just capped everything off.

Carrick has been in form since November, in fact tbh he's been playing well since the second half of last season, he started this season with an injury but once he was over that he came back in and has been quality. Scholes has been excellent and he and carrick have complimented each other well but carrick is responsible for his good form.

He needs to stay for another season..

We got a 25 player limit to respect and we already have fletch, giggs, ando, carrick and clev. Considering that we need 1-2 new cm, who should lose his place?

Owen and Berbatov, with Amos probably going on loan. And PIG obviously.

There's about a handful of players in the world who could've executed that through ball to Rafael.
