I think the thread of this title should be edited to simply 'Paul Scholes is back'. You state those words about today's peformance and you've already told the whole story. ;)

I was thinking this, give a half a yard to shoot and he'll hit the target more often than not. His passing and touch was off today but he was getting forward a lot more than I remember him doing in his last few seasons here.

He doesn't really have the pace/stamina needed for that role. You don't have to be extremely fast but you need to be quick on the counter which he isn't. Plus most number ten's drift, they don't stick central and I don't think Scholes would want to be trying to create some space from wide. I think he's best in a deep position. He'll get more space and that's where he'll do most damage with his passing out to the wingers. There he can have little burst forwards now and again but most the time he can conserve his energy. In the hole he'd have to be constantly moving about etc at a much quicker rate.

Regardless of anything negative said about his return, seeing Scholsey back in the squad, and scoring in the Prem...that gave me chills.

Never expected him to come back. Absolutely overjoyed that he did.

I'd completely forgotten he used to be number 22. Duh!

Did he? Don't remember that. Remember Becks having 24 though.

Like everyone else I absolutely loved him scoring, but..

I didn't think he was very good. For a long period of time I forgot he was even playing.

I think that he will bring composure to our midfield, which is needed at Old Trafford. Scholes could have made the difference against Newcastle or Blackburn at home. He might not have the energy to play away to Arsenal or Chelsea, but he will vital in home games where we have a lot of the ball.

Because we already have someone in that position.

If you're referring to Rooney all his "poor" games recently have been when he's been played in that role. He's been effective still but looked a frustrated figure so far away from goal.

He's been played there to do the leg work for the midfield which has been lacking in either quality or like today, the ability to chase and hustle (Scholes).

He's always at his best when he's playing up top and I thought we played our best football when he was ahead of Welbeck rather than behind like today. Welbeck has so much quality in the final third he's a little wasted as a target man IMO but he needs a midfield with players like Anderson or Cleverley (or Fletcher) behind him who can do all the midfield work and allow them to move freely as attackers.

Other than the good run into the box today thought he was poor and actually stood out for that reason which is a shame given his great statue in the game. We did look much more dangerous going forward when he went off.

Still great to see his name back on the score sheet if nothing more than nostalgic reasons.

Anyone who thinks he played bad didnt watch the game.

He was decent and brought composure to our midfield.Something Cleverley has done when he was fit.

He was off field for long and will obviously take even a couple more games till he gets his long passes accurately as it takes a bit of habit to do that.

He's been out for over half a year ffs... To be playing as he has the last 2 games is bloody amazing.

I thought he was alright...

Probably came of 5/10 minutes late but we can't expect him to play 90.

Helped control Midfield which created many chances, and scored a goal. I'm not sure what else you can ask from a player.

He was crap for the first 20 minutes, grew into it after that.

Which is to be expected really.

There was one pass in the first half, where we had had a corner and he drilled this lovely low ball back from near to the opposite corner of the box right to the corner taker

Was an incredible pass, even for Scholes

What is the top line doing to the second line? It could be divide, times, add or anything.

He didnt have his best game, but that was to be expected. The annoying thing were some basic mistakes and the easy things that got wrong. But give him another 3 games and it will be alright

(was considering getting a pool going for this but never did...)

It only took a week, but last night on 5live we had the first Scholes for Euro 2012 shout.

To be honest I can see it being a possibility, because what are the alternatives? Fat Frank and Stevie Me? Lampard has never performed well on the big stage and Gerrard doesn't have the legs for the only way he can play. Stick Scholes in a three man midfield with a defensive midfielder who can get about a bit like, as much as it pains me to say it, Scott Parker and Rooney as a link-up playmaker for a good poacher like Welbeck or Bent and that could actually be quite a good midfield. I'd go as far as to say stick Young on the left and Sturridge on the right up with Welbeck in a 4-3-3 and that could actually be a team that wouldn't fair too badly. Won't happen though because Capello seems obsessed with a target man.

Edit: I'd like to point out though that I do however think Lampard would fit into that system

Alternatives such as Carrick, Wilshere, Cleverley, Jones, Parker, Barry, Rodwell, Henderson, etc

I'm so happy to see Scholesy paying and scoring again. But one thing I can't understand is how it's possible that he can't stop himself diving in. At this point he really needs to be told not to tackle at all, just to harry the player and leave the tackling to others. Otherwise he's going to get at least a couple of reds in the remainder of the season.

Hang on... are you suggesting England line up like this:

DEFENCE
Parker - Rooney - Scholes
Sturridge - Welbeck/Bent - Young

Can you imagine what would happen to that against Spain? Or feckin anyone?

Henderson and Barry? Give me a break, it pains me to say Parker should be given a go, let alone these two cretins. Barry is no where near as good as anyone says he is and I'd think the only reason he's preferred to De Jong and Hargreaves at City is because 1. He's not made of glass and 2. He's not going to get himself sent off every game, like De Jong.

Wilshere's coming back from an injury he's had since before the season started and he's still not back, and as much as I am a proponent of bringing the younger players in and giving them the responsibility early, I still think it should be on merit and I would be surprised if he has reached form enough to deserve being picked in the England set up for the Euros. The same goes for Cleverley really, I'd be over the moon if he managed to get himself in the England team but he seems to have been picking up all these knocks and injuries since that first one from the Kevin Davies challenge that I just have a feeling that that is going to be the rest of his season, culminating in an operation in or just before the off-season when we realise it's not getting any better, assuming it's the same ankle giving him the problems.

As far as Rodwell goes, I haven't really seen him play much this season and it remains to be seen whether a pairing of Gibson and Fellaini will keep him out of Everton's first XI. So fair Fellaini has started more league games than Rodwell. I realise Rodwell is currently injured but to be quite honest, if our younger players don't get themselves fit, on form and in matches then the likelihood of any of them going is slim. With the exception of Jones who seems to have been shrugging off any attempt at injury all season (see Arshavin at OT or Dempsey at Craven Cottage and I'm sure a few other challenges that saw Jones looking a bit worse for wear in between) I don't really see any of our young stars featuring. Jones should got as defensive cover, regardless, simply because of the options he adds as a right back, centre back and defensive midfielder.
Disclaimer: I'm not saying either of these players intentionally tried to injure Jones, just that he essentially carried on after their challenges

Based on form Carrick should be one of the first names down on the list but unfortunately I think he often goes unnoticed because he's not got a manager like 'Arry always bigging him up in the press to get him in the national team like Scott Parker does. I'd like to see him go and I think he will but I don't think his selection will be as clear cut as you'd like to think. Carrick's one of my favourite footballers at the club, he's like Scholes. He acts professionally, keeps his private life private and always seems down to earth in interviews, as well as being without a doubt one of our best performers this season. I think even in our fanbase he's underrated because people don't seem to understand that you don't have to be breaking someone's legs to be doing your job.

No, I wouldn't have the central three so wide and Rooney would be playing further up the pitch and in defence, Scholes would be doing harrying as you suggested and policing the middle third while using his vision diagonal balls into the channels and runs behind and Scott Parker would be shielding the d back four. I wouldn't have it so flat. Of course there would need to be a bit of adapting to a team like Spain, Sturridge is far too weak defensively and depending on who we took really, I'd probably advocate playing two defensive midfielders to break up play between Silva/Iniesta/Xavis and have Milner on the right wing because unfortunately if Milner is fit, he will be going.

Sort of like this:

-------------Rooney-----------------
--------------------------------------
----------------------Scholes--------
--------------------------------------
----------Parker---------------------

Paul Scholes buys boots from JJB for Manchester United comeback | Metro.co.uk

The 37-year-old has only just made his return to football but is already proving why he was so sorely missed.

When the veteran midfielder decided to come out of retirement and play for the Red Devils again, he could have envisaged several problems.

He must have wondered whether he was going to be fit enough, or whether he would ruin his great reputation.

One problem that did arise, which he probably didn't see coming, was whether he would have a pair of football boots to play in.
According to the Daily Mirror, the diminutive midfielder went in search of a pair of match day football boots after giving his away when he retired.
He had a pair he used when coaching United's youngsters, but didn't feel these were suitable.

Instead of doing what any other player would do (calling his sponsor to supply him with new ones!), Scholes decided to pop into his local sports shop and buy a pair for £40.
What a guy.

is that some made up story or what ?? I am sure Albert Morgan could have come up with something since we are sponsored by Nike
