I can't help but wonder why if this deal is likely it hasn't been done yet. Usually with United a protracted transfer saga results in our target joining Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.

It would not surprise me if this were true. I never found the idea believable that the club (or Mourinho) were somehow willing to give Pogba time to decide whether he actually wanted to join us or not.

As I say probably for the simple reason that Pogba's commitment or desire to return is seriously in doubt.
Different players want to resolve their futures at different times. Imagine the coverage Pogba would get if he joined us for 100m then went on holiday. The media would be on him at every moment.
