Paul Pogba | Back in full training

If McT continues to improve, Fred maintains where he was and Bruno and Pogba click it'll be the best United midfield in 20 years. That's kind of nuts given how much we've spent, but Fergie always failed at that, and we've barely been better since he left.

Anyone remember the half season of O'Shea and Giggs as a CMF pair? Good times. They weren't even that bad.
Better than Keane/Scholes/Beckham/Giggs? I don’t think so. And what do you mean Fergie always failed?

I presume he means the best since that group.

As for Fergie failing, once again I'll take a guess that he's talking about how we've always struggled with midfield signings. Indeed, in the last 25 years we've only made one central midfield signing that was an unmitigated success (Carrick). Everyone else has either come through our youth ranks or were, at best, debatable in how good they've been.

Almost feels like a new signing with the way the season has gone, and with Bruno and a revived Fred.

Thank you, exactly on both.

The caf wasn't really a thing back then, but there were countless seasons when everyone knew our one major signing needed to be a midfielder, and Fergie would snap up another shiny striker, or winger, or full back. It was a bizarre thing to witness.

I'm actually really excited about Pogba being fit and back in the team. We've got a lot of mid-table and relegation threatened teams to play against in the last 8 games, so we need him to help unlock defences.

Yep we hear way more positives than negatives - which makes me always wonder what these chaps are talking about.

To them I assume Leadership is flying around the pitch with crunching tackles and shouting at the opponents/referee? not really sure.

@Betson What is your definition of leadership, what do you want to see from Pogba?

There are very different types of leadership but the common trait is that a leader makes the team better.

Pogba's lack of leadership is very easy to see from his performances on the pitch. Irresponsible decisions, failing to track runners, sitting on the ground sulking when he loses the ball, shooting when he's got teammates in acres of space on either side.

You don't need to be an aggressive tackler or someone who is extremely vocal to be a leader. Just look at the impact Bruno has had at United. A leader is someone the rest of the team looks to when big moments arrive and who puts team success above his own personal ego. That isn't Pogba.

Pogba can exist within a positive winning culture. In fact, I would say he needs one to be successful. He just won't be one of the leaders to drive that culture.

This is well worth a watch. It badly makes me want Pogba to stay and succeed here because he has faced so much criticism in his time at the club. Undoubtedly one of the finest talents I've seen in the red shirt and it will be gutting if this is the end of his story with the club.

In a nutshell it's really simple. Pogba is held to higher standards.

A McTominay 8/10 is probably 6/10 for Pogba or lower.

Of course he walks back in it's not even a conversation.

Exactly this. People all the time on Caf admit they hold Pogba to a higher standard....guess what though ? That’s not how picking a team works.

He doesn’t do that.

His performances will definitely improve with Bruno on the side.

Remember how his performances spiked up when he played alongside these players before,
  • 16/17 -- Herrera, Carrick, Zlatan and Mata (who were consistent that season).
  • 17/18 -- Mkhi (season start only), Lingod (purple patch for few months) and later with Herrera.
  • 18/19 -- Herrera and Lingard (during caretaker Ole months only).
All those players (yes even Zlatan and Lingard) are creative players or at least at some points before at good levels. Pogba's best run of form coincides playing with those players isn't it.

Without those creative players, or in the case of Lingard/Mata (short term, specific times), Pogba's performances dipped in form.

Just started watching it myself and was going to post it. Really well done bit of content there.

Yeh agreed, it’s very well edited and put together. Would recommend the channel in general for Utd content!

The guys a talent but I fear we’ll be dealing with the same old shit next year or the year after either from him or his agent, I hope he proves me wrong, signs a new deal, plays like we know he can play but I’m a cynical old cnut at the best of times and it’ll take a lot of convincing on my part.

He’ll either sign and stay, or won’t and leave at some point in the next two years. While he is here, he will try and perform though. I don’t believe what I think is a lazy stereotype of him being some sort of disinterested YouTuber to whom the football part doesn’t matter. He’ll give his best while he’s here, which will include at times losing possession of the ball, and the losing of possession of the football is not evidence of a footballer not caring.

Are you suggesting that’s what I’m implying? Because I didn’t say anything of the sort in my post.

With Fred finding his feet, Bruno and Pogba, It feels like we are just away from 1 or 2 good signings rather 5/6 we used to talk.

Yeah I take your point on Fergie not really addressing the midfield, especially in the latter years, but 20 years ago, the treble-winning midfield was still in full flow.

Get a CB to replace Lindelof. Get Sancho. And we're good to compete. Still question marks around Martial but he has the potential

I wonder which midfielder will move between Pogba and Fernandes. They both occupy exactly the same space, kind of the referee's position just outside the left corner of the box.

I assume Pogba will move more centrally, or even over to the right.

One easy prediction: our shot count is going to ratchet up. Not sure many clubs can boast having 2 genuine long distance threats from central midfield - will be tough for defensive midfielders to know which to pick up.

They don't occupy the same space on the pitch because Bruno has always tended to drift right, even as a quasi-winger at times for Sporting, and Pogba likewise has always tended to drift left, especially for us and for France (less so for Juve, where he played very centrally). They complement each other beautifully in that sense, at least on paper.

He doesn’t do that.
Yeah that confused me too. If anything I think he’s a bit conservative with his shooting.

Thirded.

Saw today that Peter Schmeichel says he's been told that Pogba is wanting to stay at United and he has no doubt that he will.

Yep, seems Paul is giving off very positive signs. I think if we can get top 4 and invest well this summer he will be happy to sign.

Well Pogba is back posting United stuff again on his Instagram, he hadn't done that in a while. Must be positive signs.

Paul will only stay if we continue to show improvement with the current team til the end of this campaign and, going from there, ambition in the upcoming transfer window. If not then leaving is absolutely understandable.

Lets all be o so happy Pogba is happy to stay with is, ugh..

Goosebumps in the end there.
Feck Mourinho for what he did to this club and Pogba. Pogba wanted to come back to us, but we feck it up with our mediocre players and messed up manager in Jose.
Really hope he can thrive with us before it's curtains with his affiliation with us as a club.

Can't see him going anywhere in the near future at least. Not because he wants to stay here, but because the clubs that would want him can't afford him. Particularly in this climate. He hasn't got much choice, really. I just hope he gets his head in the game and performs to the ability we know he's capable of.

He is a Manchester United player, anybody in opposition to him staying & succeeding really baffles me.

Look at the Transfer Forum & Manchester United fans are fawning over all and sundry yet pop into any Pogba thread & we do a god awful job of supporting our own.

His agent is an idiot & he hasn’t always performed but the fact Herrera, en route to a huge personal payday at PSG, has fans on this forums falling over themselves to talk up someone who actually did ‘feck off’ yet this man can’t catch a break from some when Mourinho torpedoed him/the club lets me know most views really aren’t about the man as a footballer anyway.

Vive la Pogba FC & [Rashford aside] he’s the player I’m hoping the best for in the club.
