Growing into his role.
The expectations brought about because we paid a fortune are understandable but if he had not left us and come back, in other words come up through the youth team, 99% of posters would be raving about another gem through the production line.
Have a word with yourselves!

You just said its understandable...so whats with the the last sentence.
The actual fact is he did leave us and we did bring him back for a world record fee. So having high expectations is completely logical.

Kept it simple today. Didn't try to force too much or single-handedly dribble through the whole field. I think he's slowly getting the price tag off his back and can now just focus on playing his football.

Funny that you think so, the commentators on Swedish TV were raving about the defensive work he put in today.
I wasn't talking about his defensive work or his work rate (it was quite good tonight) - I literally talked about the running. It seemed like he restricted himself to walking/jogging, maybe it was connected to the increased positional responsibility he had today.

This is why performance threads should maybe be bumped after the game? Judging somebody after 10 minutes or 15 minutes when theres a lot of time left, seems very harsh. Especially given it can turn around just like that.

Saying that, I thought the whole team (bar Mkhi, bailly and Rojo) were poor for about 40 minutes.

And he will prove worth it

Some really stupid comments in this thread during the game. Glad more thought was given in the post match comments.

I actually appreciated his performance today. There was a maturity to it where he took somewhat of a back seat to provide a platform for Mata and Mikhi to run the show.

A solid performance. Nothing special but no mistakes either.

Hope the same moaning mugs in here are in the Herrera thread as well

Now he was poor today.

Checked the Herrera thread out of curiosity. Absolute blinkers in there. Apparently he can't do nowt wrong....Paul on the other hand.

He.played the holding role well. Kept it simple with no thrills. We won 3-0. No complaints from me.

I always defend Pogba but you don't pay 90m for a player to perform the role he did against Leicester.

How much would you pay for a Paul Scholes of 23 years age? Not that Pogba has reached the peak level of Scholes yet, but he certainly has the potential to reach there. If he hangs on for 10 years and reaches his potential, 90m would look like a steal.

Given he was playing in a two man midfield. Do you not think the requisite for him was to play a little more reserved and provide some stability with Herrera?

Really liked his game yesterday, showed he can play something different if needed and controlled the tempo as well as Carrick in the second half, very rare skill that is.

Yup, he's getting a lot of flak but the studio I was watching were raving about him at half time.
I was glad he got some mainstream praise! Some people just need to be told by the TV before they realize.

No no. People moaning about the price are spot on. He didn't do any of the things 90m players do. He did exactly what he was told to do by the manager without throwing his toys out of the pram. Oh and he did the team thing by keeping his game simple and letting Mkhi and Mata run the show. Disgraceful!

This was a different type of performance from Pogba. Atlast, he seemed to understand his role in a 2-man midfield where he needed to be less adventurous and release the ball quicker. Earlier in the season, when played in a 2-man midfield, he took it upon himself to go up the pitch and setup a goal or score one so that he could justify his price tag. Today, he did what the manager asked of him which allowed us to play that extra attacker we needed to break down Leicester. With his recent form in a 3-man midfield, where he has been getting into good positions but missing easy chances, it is better for him to play a more subdued role for a few games to take the unnecessary pressure off him.

IMHO, he did what have been asked of him by the manager, for this particular game, against this particular team who thrives on situations where opponents make any kind of mistakes. Kept in simple while moving the ball around, to invite Leicester out of their comfort zones hence capitalising on their own mistakes.

Didn't seem to dick around much at all today. Can't even recall one of those "I'll hold onto this ball until 3 opposition players are surrounding me" moments.

You pay 90m for a player to make your team better, regardless of what that entails for the player.

I find it amazing how reactive football fans are. I thought he was better last week only the forwards failed to win the game for us. If we had won with a goal from one of those incredible passes he made the forum would have been singing his praises, as such he took untold amounts of flack instead.

I can't read anything into the result yesterday. Much like City against West Ham last week we were gifted the game. The idea that we have found solutions in Mkhitaryan as a 10 and Pogba as a deep lying play maker seem misguided to me when the context is considered.

I thought he was very good today. Very discipline when attack and defense. He reduced his dribbles today for the team. Good work Pogba.

The boy is capable of brilliance we just need another few around him replaced so we don't have to rely on him every game like we are trying to just now.
Sign Griezman and two other midfielders for me and that would be a great summer imo.
DDG
Valencia Smalling Bailly Shaw
No 6 who can dictate play
No 8 box to box with goal threat Pogba
Griezman Martial
Zlatan

We won't be signing two midfielders I reckon, unless Carrick, Fellaini and Schweinsteiger all leave in the summer. We desperately need a pacey right winger, that should be our number one priority along with a potential Carrick replacement. Don't think Griezmann is the ideal signing but I wouldn't say no to him considering he is simply world class.

hmmmm. so we need a Pirlo and a Lampard/Vidal. So what exactly would Pogba's role be then?

Seemed like Rio's words hit home with his performance. There wasn't any unnecessary flash and flair and his simplicity and discipline really made a difference in controlling the match. Would like to see if he can do similarly against a more competitive side.

You really believe that was down to Rio and not the manager telling him to reign it in a bit as he was playing in a 2?

I'm sure Mourinho's instructions are part of it. I also think that hearing somebody a club legend like Rio criticize your behavior and then failing to get the result against Hull could well have been a bit humbling to Pogba as well. I don't mean to credit Rio as some genius for saying it or that Pogba's entire performance was down to it, but in some ways I think it may have helped for sure. We have seen Pogba play in a 2 in previous matches and create trouble for himself by failing to keep it simple.

Some of his balls over the top from a deep lying role were a thing of beauty.

Same as he had at Juventus just get involved and create havoc. We need someone to dictate our tempo and a runner imho.

Are we ever going to stop talking about that damn price tag? It doesn't matter! We've already made it back from his shirt sales alone! He was never worth 90 million as a footballer, we paid 90 million because of his commercial worth! Time to start viewing him for what he is: a high-quality, all-round midfielder who's job it is to make our midfield tick. He doesn't have to be the talisman in every game in order to be a good signing and an important player.
