Paul Mitchell - Sporting Director | Now at Newcastle

I can’t believe he hasn’t been called out on this before. He routinely posts other reporters stories 2/3 days later as if they’re his own
Read what is in the media that day, read what fans say online, join the two together, add your own little spin like “sources say he wants full control which could be an issue” to cover yourself and hey presto - you have a Miguel Delaney career in journalism.

With Bout and Lawlor moving there’s space for Mitchell.

Hes also been with Ralf recently and apparently keen to return to England. Seems a go-er

From a United-supporting family too so very clearly raised right.

Expecting him to end up at Chelsea this summer, but would be an incredible coup for us. Rangnick alone isn't enough.

Fresh rumours on Twitter (I know) that he’ll be named head of recruitment. Could just be twitter nonsense but can definitely see it happening.

Anyone with any history of being right saying it on twitter?
Not that I can see, or I would have posted the tweet. All just seems to be from ITK’s etc which could end up being nonsense. I think I just want it to be true so I’m hoping if I post in this thread it will manifest itself into existence.

I cant see it at all.

from everything I read about United from the more reliable journalists, their current set up wouldn’t accommodate a head of recruitment

Why not? We’ve just freed up two spaces at the very top that could easily be filled by one specialist. I reckon that’s probably why they’ve left as they would have been under Mitchell or Mitchell doesn’t need them/they do the same job as he’ll be doing

Makes total sense

Scouts are a different thing

The role Mitchell would take at a club would be impossible to take with Murtough, Fletcher and Judge in their current roles

Would he not just make up a role in a new stripped Transfer Committee. I’m sure he would just the last word on all scouting. Making him in a way head of requirement.

Murtough - head of football operations
Fletcher - technical director (overseeing relationship between academy and first team)
Judge - chief negotiator
Mitchell - head of recruitment
ETH - Manager
Rangnick - Consultant (investigating every aspect of the club from top to bottom and coming back to Murtough with his findings)

I don’t see how that couldn’t work.

Looks good on football manager

in reality it’s not streamlined enough and too many conflicts of interests

That's just the head, imagine the people under them. No wonder we end up making transfer only at the end of the window, by the time they find everyone available for a discussion, all the bargains / good deals are gone.

I see repeated ITK accounts saying this is close…is it really based on a pic with RR

At least we have some decently qualified people on board now. Instead of just relying solely on the manager as was the case previously.

Only two who are qualified are ten Hag and Rangnick, if we don't get Mitchell.

I dont think murtough has done a bad job.

Rangnick was a poor appointment (but its a stopgap). Ten Hag was a coup. At least on paper thats how it looks.

Agreed, this is a very impressive lineup.

RR as interim/consultant
Mitchell in charge of transfers/scouting
ETH as manager

It's like a CAF users wetdream

Really dependent on RRs actual role. He himself said that it's not what is on paper that matters but how it worke out practically

After his stint here? I'd hope its minimal and just passing on advice to those in charge.

The man has let the pressure get to him. Talking about changing 10 players in a press conference

He's cracked.

Woudl be a fantastic coup to get Mitchell, proven himself at every club with at least one cult heroe like signing that has gone on to big things. As a couple of people have said Mtchell/Rangnick could be fantastic in terms of recruitment I feel.

People can slate Rangnicks managerment record here, everything he has said off of the pitch the alst few months pretty much I agree with though, he is an intelligent man that hasnt been allowed to do anything but work twith these players and he isnt a manager.

We certainly need more than a promsing manager as our recruitment has been dreadful and we have to unearth some gems if we are to progres squickly, we simply cant go out and spend millions on player a and b each summer that are obvious candidates as we need a good 10+ signings I feel over the next 18months or two years

Disagree, I think its madness some of the managers here that have talked about doign things in stages and us only signing 3 or so to improve the squad, Ole especially was deluded in that regard or following orders.

100% this side needs 10 or so players to be able to challenge as not all of them will be a success, no side is that successful with all there signings and our first eleven is literally 6 players short, let alone the squad as big as it is.

Everybody seems to be judging Rangnick the manager, when that wasnt even what he was bought here for. I am confident from what he has said he knows exactly the task ahead and has been brutla in letting it be know with intelligence and honesty, I am confident he will do well IF he stays

Mitchell has done well as a 'head of recruitment' in his career thus far and isn't doing very well at all as the head of football operations at Monaco, hence a lot of their fans are not happy with him.

Mitchell had no experience of running/overseeing multiple departments on the football side at a high level for a period of time before he was given the Monaco gig. The likes of Murtough (United), Ashworth(Brighton), Webber (Norwich), Crocker(Soton) McDermott (Spurs), all had one thing in common before they became the head of football operations at their respective clubs/associations, and that was that they had a lot of experience being the ones who were directors at academy level. Which meant they had to make hiring/firing calls and oversee the development of multiple departments beneath the first team, which was controlled by the first team manager.

Mitchell came into prominence when he was working under the Soton DoF, Les Reed. And it was Les Reed who brought Mitchell and Pochettino to Southampton. Mitchell was the Head of recruitment at Southampton and reported to the DoF Les Reed. At Spurs, Mitchell was also the head of recruitment and reported to either Levy or Pochettino in a manager led approach to the first team. And even when Mitchell joined RB Leipzig, he was the Head of recruitment at the club reporting to their DoF, Ralf Rangnick and his assistant. And when Rangnick stepped down from his role as the DoF, Leipzig didn't appoint Mitchell to replace Rangnick but rather opted for Markus Krösche who replaced Rangnick as the DoF at the club.

And what role is available at United that Mitchell has done well in the past in? That's right, it's the role of Head of recruitment.

If Mitchell does leave Monaco as its been reported by some media outlets then I can't see why he'd get the role of the Sporting director for the reasons stated above. But I can see him being chosen for the role of head of recruitment or in a deputy DoF role. Because even Rangnick had his former player from Hoffenheim, Per Nillson, to assist him at the Redbull clubs as the assistant Sporting director. And Nillson had only just retired from playing at Hoffenheim when he was given the role at 34 years of age in 2017, without any experience.

Very very good post mate.

Good post.
