Who had a much better season and was a standout performer at the Euros

Your negativity is tiresome. You don’t know the first thing about the guy and you’re just trying to find any issue you can. If we were signing Califiore you’d be telling us he’s never done it in the PL and that we shouldn’t be offering so much to a small club like Bologna etc.

I am sure every club overpays at times, but we have been especially guilty. We have done it countless times over the last XII years & that has brought us to our current precarious position. Is that up for debate?

no obviously not. but in this specific case, the figure mentioned does not call for the sort of reaction some are giving. There was a clear suggestion that Lecce were rubbing their hands against idiotic man united, yet Ive given quite a few comparative examples where clubs 'smaller' than us have paid give or take 5m euro either side. If we're going to analyse every transfer free through the trauma of antony and mount, then we will never be happy. Its a moderate fee, and now we have to give the player a chance to see how it turns out. What is the sense in pretending this is some sort of obvious overpay?

if we gave bologna 45m for Calafiori (who hasnt been great by the way), this place would be listing him in every single overpay. Likewise the examples ive given above for likes of palace, west ham and bournemouth.

My negativity is just concerning the price we pay. I don't mind a punt at all, but in my opinion it's too expensive for that, especially considering our financial situation. Buying potential is great, but half this thread seems to expect immediate fireworks

Bad signings get glossed over when your at the upper end of the table. If you win major titles they totally get forgotten about.

Nobody remembers Klopp/Peps expensive flops.

Just this sort of accounting that fans have started spending time worrying about for the club. Not a pop it's all just out of our control so feels like an unnecessary thing to stress about.

Let's just hope he comes and creates a load of goals ect.
Agreed, I think we needed some form or regulation but they arent clear and transparent with PSR and forecasts etc so it makes people speculate, i think PSR is broken anyway as the main way to circumnavigate it is to sell academy products which isnt why PSR was brought in so I hope its reworked

That looks like a decent fee. Lets hope he can stay fit and perform well. We need some more production from our wingbacks.

Glad the fee seems to have come in significantly below the initial €40m being talked about (though still pricey). Let's hope he can hit the ground running!

Reasonable fee. Hopefully he raises the physical floor a bit and adds some attacking impetus.

Why?

The league season is effectively already dead, with some sort of mid-table finish inevitable regardless of who we sign. Cups are still there to be won, but those are very luck-dependent even at the best of times. The impact new signings bedding in straight away can make on the actual outcome of our season is marginal, regardless of who we sign.

And even if it wasn't, he's still a 20 year old kid moving to a new country. Demanding that he settle straight away is nonsensical. We're buying players for the next several years, not next several months. If he takes time to bed in then he takes time.
Surely, it makes no sense to be buying any left back that can't be considered an immediate starter quality player when we have a very gifted left back in the academy and have just bought another 18 year old from Paraguay who will both be seeking first team football in the next couple of years. Dorgu really needs to be making an impact straight away for that fee. The opportunity cost was too great. Also, the Europa League is a fast track to get us back to Champions League as it doesn't look like we'll be making it on league merit for a while.
