Patrick Dorgu | Medical today? No. Weekend.

If he’s a good player then what does that have to do with anything?

Do you think small clubs should discount their players to big clubs? It’s also the last days of the January window. Fair play to them for sticking to their valuation.
No issue with buying from a small club and spending the money. Can’t remember what Robertson costs when they bought him from Hull but what a bargain. No one is cheap anymore though really. Maz was a steal.

I just hope he’s ready to go from the off and gives us what we need.

Knowing our luck he’ll get injured on the plane flight over and miss the rest of the season anyway.

Yeah, I get that small clubs shouldn’t just roll over and give discounts to bigger clubs, and fair play to Lecce for holding their ground. But let’s not forget, this guy was bought for, what, 400k just two seasons ago? I know it’s a case of willing buyer, willing seller, but goddamn I’m pretty sure most of us had never even heard of this kid before, and now we’re paying 30 odd million for him. Whether we like it or not, people are gonna expect him to hit the ground running and basically transform the left side into what Amorim wants.

Silver lining, I guess he’ll probably be on the lower side of the wage bill, at least.
Yes the low wage will make the deal more attractive.

Wan Bissaka at Palace had better highlights than Dorgu now, and he did look the same or better in ball carrying pre purchase.

He's also doing quite well at West Ham in this department.

I think he's one that Amorim would have quite liked in hindsight. Similarly with McTominay. Both would probably have gotten game time over the likes of Malacia and Casemiro respectively.

Who cares, its a YouTube video. Those are useless for assessing piayers

any word on what his salary is and will be?

i really hope we are capping his new salary at a max of his current salary +50%. Ultimately he needs to prove he's worth the big bucks over multiple seasons.

Didn't we give Anthony something like 5x his previous salary?

If you buy a player for the amount Antony cost you can’t offer them a contract worth £20k a week.

He was earning around £100k a week without the champions league bonus so hardly a monstrous amount of money for a 90 million signing.

Looks like its all but announced. I'm going to predict that although he may go straight into the team at left wingback, or straight onto the bench and then eased in, I think it'll be 2 to 3 years before he looks like he might be worth £30 million. He will of course have some individual games where he does well and be a left footed player with more pace than Malacia so he'll be a bit of an improvement over Dalot at LWB in the meantime.

We sold them because they were both about to leave on frees, and made at least £40M out of it. Shrewd moves IMO for two players that are decent but nothing special. We have to stop getting nothing financially out of players like that.

Also, naming Casemiro is odd to me. He's basically not playing at all anymore, even Collyer has surpassed him. Pretty low bar to clear.

Hard to get excited with our track record. Hopefully the lads turn out well. He ain’t cheap that’s for sure.

Crazy money

If £33M = Crazy money

How would you describe Antony? ;)

I think if there is a bit of wiggle room in the add-ons and he doesn’t reach them all, dropping the fee to around £29M (for example)

Then in modern football that doesn’t look too alarming to me.

Good signing for us, we are crying out for a young athletic left sided player. In the rangers game it was so obvious when Malacia came on that if we had someone for enough to play in the prem we could really stretch the play out wide and have someone who could receive the ball with their stronger foot and take a positive touch.

One thing that struck me in the Fulham game was the amount of times that players took a negative touch back behind them rather than Infront of themselves to open things up. He's quite raw but we have had success with players like that with Garnacho and Mainoo

Yeah, the fact that people are attempting to equate this to overpaying on signings like Antony/Hojlund is a bit weird.

In 2022 his weekly wage was around £19k/week at Ajax. He moved to £150k/week at Man Utd which is over seven times the salary.

Whilst I understand he needed to be on more than 19k/week at Man Utd there are ways to structure a deal rather than giving him 150k/week up front. Would he really have turned it down at 100k?

It's the same phenomenon on a smaller scale. We're absolutely being rinsed here, just obviously not Antony levels of being taken to the cleaners
You've admitted to never watching him play - how can you be in a position to say we are getting rinsed?

That was two weeks ago! Of course I watched a bit of the guy now.

I'm not a scout by any means, every chance I'm totally wrong. What I'm seeing from him doesn't make me think he's worth more than Malacia was when we signed him, though

It’s slightly overpaying but it’s hardly ‘crazy money’.

The problem is that we keep making these overpaying but hardly crazy money moves, they add up and when put together turn into crazy overall expenditures.

I would imagine so.

You have to break some eggs to make an omelette but it feels like we've broken some eggs and left raw eggs with bits of shell in the pan.

I'm guessing even if he was announced today he's not going to be able to play for us for a couple of weeks due to post-brexit rules?

One thing we lack in this team is strong athletic individuals.. he certainly ticks both of those boxes. Excited for this signing personally.

Who cares if we overpay by £5-8m if the player turns out to be great for us? The main issue we have had is that not only have we overpaid and these players have failed to succeed to a point where we are unable to get a fraction of the money back.

I hope he’s great and leaves all these posters eating their words. If he’s eventually good enough to start for us and we get going again, the same posters will no doubt be saying he’s a steal. Arsenal paid more money for Calafiore just least season.
Who had a much better season and was a standout performer at the Euros

Maybe trying to sell myself on this signing as I can't quite see it, but I think he'd provide good value in our build up.

Onana loved that clipped pass out to Dumfries at RWB while he was at Inter, and Dorgu provides a similar big target and mismatch against oppo wide player. Probably always a nice easy out ball if there's nothing else on.

Only problem arrives when these players turn out to be duds. Nobody will care about 5 million here, 10 million there if the signings are a success.

When they fail, that's when the penny pinching starts to matter. Let's hope it's a non issue with this bloke.

Most transfers in Football are failures, so when you overspend on every transfer your feel it every time. All clubs need to also make good value transfers to offset bad value transfers.

Depends what you’re looking for. Watching a 4 minute video of Antony for Ajax you can see he literally never takes on his man from the outside or gets away from his fullback.

He pretty much continued that same output here. I remember AWB videos before he arrived too. There was literally zero to any successful crosses into the box with height.

If your access the YouTube clips correctly you can find exactly what your looking for.

Dorgu looks extremely raw and even though very athletic yet again we seemed to be looking at an athlete that doesn’t have amazing recovery pace or amazing acceleration over 10 yards. Abit like what Malacia lacks.
