 above.

Also, have to ask. No slight on his performance last night.

Has someone said to him; "If you get caught forward, don't worry about getting back. I mean at all. Don't even make an effort. Just amble even if we're in complete danger of conceding a goal.."

It's bizarre. He goes forward and if we lose the ball he doesn't even try and get back? I've seen this about 6 or 7 times in the last few games???

Bizarre.

That is why Welbeck or Young get preference over Nani to play on the left. Evra needs cover on the left. He doesn't seem have the the legs (and the desire) to track back and position himself now.

Thought he played brilliantly last night. He stopped more or less everything that came down his side, intercepted well and won several headers. Also good going forwards; his crossing seems to have improved a bit.

I always find it bizarre that a fullback should always be able to link-up in attack, but at no time in the game should he be caught out of position in defense. It is only natural that when he helps out Young in attack, Young helps him out in defense.

All modern fullbacks are caught out of position; we were just blessed with an Evra a couple of seasons ago who busted his balls, neck and lungs to get back and forth on that pitch like it was unreal. Look at Cole yesterday - atrocious, not even close to Evra's play.

I thought he had a decent game - definately better than previous games

Think he has been good lately - better at defending and links-up well going forward. He is now back to winning headers against players twice his size, and he is great at intercepting the ball and bombing forwards, driving us forwards like a true captain, imo.

He had good game, and eventough he couldn't do nothing for any of their goals, his defending for their second goal was shameless considering he is our captain. I think he is playing solid season so far, he is better than last year IMO.

I'm confused... you're saying he could do nothing for their goals, but he was poor on the second?

Gary Neville said there wasn't much wrong with our defending for the 2nd goal, and I'm inclined to agree with him, it was a very good cross and a very good jump and header from Ramires.

I thought Rafael came inside to cover a man who Rio marked anyway and left Oscar alone at the back post prior to the cross..

yeah, he has been better this season compared to the last 2 years. it is going to be hard or almost impossible for him to reach the heights of 2007-2009, but at least he is doing a bit better now.

He couldn't do nothing because Ramires wasn't his responsibility, but if you watch his (lack of) movement for that goal you will see what I am talking about. I am not saying he was poor because that goal was never his fault, but in terms of capitancy, his movement was shameless, he looked like he couldn't care less about marking their players.

He can't mark what isn't his to mark, can he? Then he would go all Jonny Evans jumping into the back of Rio (this case Cleverley), and we don't want that!

Their second goal was good play from them. First Rio was majestic in winning the header against Torres (Rio was backing but still managed to clear it), then Ramirez makes his best header ever. Sometimes it is just good attacking.

Very few fullbacks will ever reach those heights. He doesn't have that blistering pace that he had back then - still faster than Ashley Cole though, and he was even able to outpace Ramirez - which is quite an achievement.

What I like best is his rediscovered ability to win headers against players much bigger than he is.

oh ffs, I hate this. Read my post again, I said it two times already, the goal isn't his fault, but his movement is ridiculous in that situation, he is walking like he is on the street and not in football game.

Agree his powers of recovery are gone its not nice to see.

So you basically want him to look very sharp, on his toes, but for something he can't really do anything about? It's like saying the left winger wasn't actively seeking the ball that was down the right winger's path... I read your post, and it just doesn't make sense. If it wasn't his fault, not his man to mark, what does it matter how he looked?

I would still wager that he puts in a decent shift - but you can't expect him to have the energy he once had. Age has something to do with it, playing with injuries would be another and playing too much over a prolonged time span would be the third.

Still tracks back like most fullbacks though - we just watch him every game.

Yep but he isn't anywhere need as good as he once was hence the alleged interest in Baines.

Well, he couldn't know the ball wasn't coming to his player, didn't he? He was lucky the player who was crossing the ball found Ramires and not the player on the far post(Evra's man).

Jeeeez you are nitpicking. Criticizing for the sake of it. To me, Evra couldn't do anything about it, and that is it. Was there some midfielder who didn't cover the rebound are on the 18 yard box? Don't you see how silly this discussion is. He could do nothing about the goal - end of story, oh and he also played a great game.

I didn't said he could do nothing for that goal, but that type of attitude when defending is one of the reasons he was poor in last few years. He is often just lazy to track his player, or to run at all. Just remember that Kuyt's goal last season at Anfield, and you will understand what I'm talking about.

I know what you are talking about - last year and many matches before this, but to criticise him this time for his previous mistakes is rubbish.

You also have to bear in mind that he did play through parts of last season with injuries; Ferguson said so and it was obvious from his running that he carried an injury - he sort of ran with a limp, never reaching anything resembling top speed. Probably why he didn't track back as much.

To me, it seems that you made an argument that has very little substance to it, and yet you seem to argue just for the sake of it. As you said, he could do nothing about it, so why bother mentioning it when he played a very good match? That is needless focus on the negative.

Chill out, I said because he is our captain, and he shouldn't act that way, standing and watching opposition team attacking and acting he is just an observer, and not leader on the pitch.

Thank you Neviller, it's nice to hear that from you.

Again, it's criticising for the sake of it. Did you see when he intercepted the ball and outpaced Ramirez (didn't think he still had that in him) and carried several attacks forward? Isn't that being a captain?

You are nitpicking and refusing to agree that it was bs in the first place.

I think he must have took a pill labelled Evra 2008. Been brilliant the last couple of matches. Looks sharper, faster and more eager. Scored to goals thus far - does he have any assists?

Defended very well today (except for that one against Ramsey) and was great going forwards and linking up our attack.
