Apparently these guys had grenades and AK47s, it is very difficult to mob them, they would get mowed down or trampled.

I have no idea how it is, but from every scientific report I have read, it seems that waiting for his turn is how people behave.
What worries me is that this type of massacres can have an another affect. If the government cannot protect their own citizens, then the citizens will start defending themselves, like in US. And then we know what happens.

Religion is the cause, in the same way democracy was the cause in WW II or national identity has been in the past as well. But, that said, you don't attach the blame to the reason people are in conflict, you attach it to the people who are actually in the conflict.
These people are monsters, minds warped by some twisted teaching of a religion to the point where it has no true reflection on the actual religion in whose name they're meant to be fighting. No religion will be advocating these attacks, no clear-minded Muslim will be proud of these attacks and so it's not fair for any normal Muslim to be blamed for these attacks.
