Pakistan vs England (in UAE) 2012

As I said Pakistan dropped a clanger on this pitch. They are an average side no better than fifth in the world as their batting is very weak but their bowling is very strong. Broad has a habit of playing well against Pakistan. His innings will win it for England. If we post a 100 lead we will skittle Pakistan out for less than 250.

Straight forward win for England. Yes!

70 lead still damn good with our attack and Pakistan batting. End of day Pakistan will have lost 4 wickets.

Brave predictions and probably not unfair going on past Pakistan performances. Your prediction of 50 run lead has come true (well 70 runs). Certainly a good match, glad I'm not watching it...far too nervy.

England's open bowlers (Anderson/Broad) have been very busy physically and mentally all morning. Small margin of details?

Monty coming on after 5 overs. Have to say I do like the spinners on early with a new ball on a deteriorating pitch.

He'll probably get spanked now I've said that.

10-wicket Ajmal got spanked on this pitch by a part-time batsman. :)

But as expected Broad's being rested as he won't be able to bend his back to deliver his lethal short of a length balls.

Ooooh, someone's reading Redcafe and not liking me. To spite me they've brought Broad back. :) Lots of back bending to follow?

abit of a stunning collapse by Pakistan. Happy for Monty - good for his confidence.

Just goes to show what picking a proper team according to match conditions will do. Still left dumbfounded how England went into first test with just one spinner

As I said before Pakistan has a poor batting lineup. Simple as that. The pitch is fine.

The inevitable batting failure has shown up :(

I like Pakistan as a team but their glaring weakness is their batting. So tell me why cant Pakistan make decent batsmen?

We had a very good line-up when Inzy, Younis & Yousuf were playing about 8 or so years back. Maybe the lack of world-class batsman is to do with the mentality of some players who seem more suited to ODI/T20 cricket than Test cricket or maybe it's the training they are given? Given our history of producing great bowlers, I think Pakistani youngsters would rather aim to be the next Akram or Waqar than the next Miandad.

Seems to be the opposite issue to India who all want to be batsman and that just leaves medium paced trundlers.

Anyway Pakistan are fighting back. If they have a lead of 150+, you'd back them especially if Ajmal is in song. Last hour probably goes to them as they finish on 125-4, or effectively 55-4.

This mini resistenance has proven its still a batting track. Commadus is right, we need 220 lead to win. 200 may just be enough. But anything less and England should knock them off quite comfortably.

Come on Commadus, what lead do you reckon Pak will finish on?

It seems wickets fall in clusters and England have proved that they can get them against Pakistan. Tomorrow first session I expect Pakistan to lose 4 further wickets for about 80 runs added. Pakistan will be out with a lead of about 150 which is not enough. Ajmal will make it hard but Pakistan playing under pressure and Misbah poor use of DRS will ensure we win.

As to Pakistan not producing batsment my theory is that you create decent enough technical batsmen who get 20 and 30 but then fail once they are in to make big scores. To me this is a clear indication of lack of mental toughness and discipline whereby they concentrate hard at the start and when they feel they are "in" they lose focus and subsequently their wicket.

I say 150 -180 which still isn't enough. As you said 220 and I would say its in Pakistans hands to win. Fourth innings run chases are invariably hard because of scoreboard pressure, a pitch deteriorating, doubt sets in whether you bat to draw or bat to win if wickets fall, add to that Ajmal with his tail up and Pakistan with two other quality spinners.

200 and its evens.

However I feel Broads innings and his bowling will sway it for England. Unless Pakistans seemers find their groove and help their spinners then England should have this in the bag.

Everything depends on this pair. If they fall early I can't see the rest getting many with Swan, and Monty bowling in tandem.

Pakistan 214 all out, lead of 144. The pundits seem split as to whether that is a challenging total for England.

Yes, looked out to me too.

Bell out now, unluckily. Pakistan are right back in this.

Someone needs to play positive cricket. Blocking will just prove batsmen's undoing.
