Last season didn't Torres have a real nasty issue with his hamstring where he came back after a couple months and went right back on the injured list?

Sure the lesser hamstring problems can be recovered from within a few weeks at most but, this wasn't a case of that.

I just hope he does come back and shuts up half the lot that are so pleased his contract will be ending and possibly see the back of him. The club has put a lot of effort into getting him back into shape and we've not bought another CM because kept thinking he'd be back - would be a shame if now his knee problems are behind him and because of one unlucky hamstring issue, we don't end up keeping him at least for another year after all that work.

Him putting in another free kick against Le Arse like he did in his first season to all but, seal up the title - bet people will say I always knew he was quality.

I don't think anyone believes his knee problems are truly behind him. I think that it's the discomfort of his knees that could have caused his hamstring injury (running/moving differently to try and account for his knee problems)

At some point, the injury moves into the brain. That's where I think he probably is now, Over cautious about every little thing to the point of paralysis.

Or just unlucky after being thrown into a league match without so much as a proper reserve outing and just one of those things.

No one knows for sure but, people were writing off Rio because of his back problems. Suppose could reach for that his last groin injury and now his calf strain are due to trying to account for a bad back.

My take is give him a chance after all this time even if it is a pay as you play contract instead of letting him walk in a free after so much time / effort invested by United. With his knee issue supposedly taken care of, we were supposed to get a chance to see if that really was the case. We don't know if this hamstring was a mental thing or bad luck but, once it is sorted out and he gets a chance - we may no for sure if it is time to move on or not.

A terrific player that SAF worked really hard to get - keep him if we can if the cost is not too high.

If he couldn't last six minutes of a Premier League game, I can't see how a reserve match would help. Unlucky, maybe, but sometimes it's more than luck.

Tension? First game in however long and it's at home and you just want to do well and knowing you really haven't got no match time but, the team is counting on you to do a job? Versus going and playing a reserves match where the primary goal is for you to run out there under match conditions and build up your match fitness?

Scholes got thrown in the reserves recently after his lay off is it for fun or do they have a reason to give 1st team players minutes in the reserves versus just throwing back on the field playing 1st team matches.

Maybe it would have happened if he had played in the reserves but, mind and body are probably in quite different states when playing for the reserves versus 1st team.

Maybe, I just feel that lasting six minutes and suffering a hamstring injury that would keep you out for months is just sort of inevitable. Rerserves or Premier League. Had it been even 30 minutes... But six?

This post I like.

Was a fantastic player.

Would have been so much useful in our mid field this season.

Shame time has ran out.

6 seconds, 6 minutes, 60 minutes. It doesn't matter. His body wasn't ready to go full speed and his hammy popped. Period.

Hargreaves has suffered tremendously from mismanagement from our physios. They didn't recognize the severity of his knees and allowed him to play through the season, potentially ending his career. Then they let him play before his body was fully back up to speed.

Unfortunate really.

That's some statement to make when you know nothing about his condition only what were being fed from the club

How can you blame the physio team? They can only work on what the player is telling them they can't see through his knee or tell if his hammy will pop!!!!
To blame the physios on potentially ending his career is the most ridiculous thing I have heard in a long time

To suggest that united have substandard physios is absolutely stone mad.
To suggest those physios are to blame for Owen Hargreaves is off the wall!

You don't know that

We should just release Hargreaves in the summer.

Three years of pretty much zero football tells it's own story.

One of the biggest issues with our midfield, which is routinely criticised on the Cafe, is that one of it's senior members is never fit enough to play. We can't risk another season of constant injuries with the 25 man squad rule, even on a pay as you play deal.

Rebuilding of our midfield should start with Hargreaves being the first player we let go and then we plan from there.

I have a degree of sympathy for Hargreaves as a footballer but he's too long been a drain on United with his lack of fitness. He's worse than Saha and Wes combined.

Exactly.

It's a real shame and nobody's fault but he occupies a slot in our squad that is supposed to be filled by a seasoned, top class central midfielder while contributing pretty much feck all for the last 2 years. No wonder our central midfield comes in for so much criticism.

But can you see us getting in a top class player to replace him?

Can you see a player as good as him coming in to replace him even?

I don't see a problem with a year pay as you play deal, if having a pre-season elps him get and stay fit for the majority of next season then we have a very good player on our hands.

It's coming up to three straight seasons over constant injury now, Pogue.

He's honestly the most injury prone player I have ever seen for United. At least we occasionally got a half a season out of Saha and some good seasons out of Wes. Garton was bad, abit like Hargreaves, but I can also remember him getting on the pitch every now and then.

He's the obvious player to release IMO and we then replace him in the squad with a new first team central midfielder which is almost a universal want on the CAFE.

I would say 'yes' to both of your questions. Especially the second one as I have grave doubts (a) Hargreaves is ever going to be close to the player he was and (b) if he will ever be fit to get a run of games.

The problem with a pay as you play deal is that we are left with Hargreaves taking up a squad place in the 25 man squad and a very good chance he will be crocked. You can't ignore the last three years.

I'd honestly prefer to keep Gibson for another year than get Hargreaves on another contract. At least Gibson would be fit for most of our games next season.

I'm sure there are plenty of good midfielders out there who can improve our squad. A pay as you play deal might have made sense a few years back but with the 25 man squad rule it's an unnecessary gamble and, let's be honest, it's a gamble with dreadful odds based on his injury record throughout his career.

I realise it's a huge gamble but Hargreaves - if fit - is twice the player Gibson is. We really need a top class midfielder, not yet another average one.

The 25 man squad rules makes it a risk not worth taking IMO. We can't be sure that he can stay fit. Yet we need to bee up the quality of our midfield. It's sad but we might just have to let him go. That hamstring injury did him no favours at all.

Can't we put him on a pay as you go deal, i bet he will soon play 50 plus games a season!

Exactly.

That's a little unfair Pogue - Hargreaves isn't directly responsible for the failings of certain others...

I don't feel I can really call this - it'll come down to whatever his prognosis really is for the future. If there's anything like a realistic chance he can recover then I'd say the club should of course stand by him and keep him.

Who knows? Perhaps the truth is that the last 2 years have been one long journey back to a recovery? It's possible and if it were the case then he should stay.

My point is that none of us know what's happened or where he's at now.

If his knees have reached the point that SAF can't justify retaining him I think his career would be in major doubt as I can't see a club wanting to get involved with him at that point.

I can see SAF standing by him for compassionate grounds if nothing else - he'd rather be patient and see if a Solskjaer-type comeback is eventually possible than essentially cast an honest player's career on the scrapheap.

The problem is Hargreaves is never fit and has not been for three years. We no longer know how good he is going to be.

Gibson's not really the problem here either. I just brought him into the comparison because he gets criticised week in week out but one of the biggest problems with our midfield, the senior player on three years on the treatment table, hardly gets a mention in comparison. Maybe Carrick, who is someone often gets touted as someone to ship out would have been a better comparison.

Hargreaves is taking a slot that should be occupied by a first team player and he's been taking that slot for too long now. Another season would be utter madness after the last few years. Time to cut our losses and start the rebuilding process.

Can you really be that sure though, without being privy to his actual medical prognosis?

For all we know, his knees are fine now and the only problems he's had are the twinges and strains typical of those making a comeback after so long out.

Hargreaves has hardly played any football since the 2006 World Cup. We are talking a small part of the end of his last season with Bayern and then 07/08 with United(were he was often rested that season due to the tedonitis).

He seemed to be injury prone before that going on the stats that have been put up before.

It's really difficult to avoid the fact, especially the length of his absences over the last three years, that's he's unlikely to ever be a reliable player. His tedonitis has been deemed fixed almost since the start of the season now and he's still only made one appearance for United.

We also have to consider if he would be fit, what player are we going to be left with following the surgery.

I take the point on Fergie having to trust his medics and that will be a big factor in his decision on Hargreaves but I expect Fergie to be abit ruthless here and start the rebuilding process by releasing him. It would be a unsurprising move after his injuries the last few years.

Don't disagree with the general sentiments of your post but would strongly disagree with the Solskjaer comparison. Ole earned all the patience he was shown and more, through many years of great service to the club. He was also in the twilight of his career, so wouldn't have been expected to make much of a contribution anyway.

Louis Saha would be a much better comparison. In terms of the contribution made while at the club (arguably Saha made a greater contribution?) and the fact they are/were supposed to be part of our best XI. Saha was released due to his inability to stay fit, so I don't see why Hargreaves should be treated differently.

EDIT: although re-reading your post, the only analogy with Solskjaer you're making is the potential to play again after a long time out. Which makes my response a bit redundant. Apart from the bit about Saha. I stand by that.

What is his current status anyways? I mean it was a hamstring but should he not have recovered from that by now.

I still believe a lot of it is mental now. And that is why they pushed him straight into a starting role in that game. Just a shame how it worked out.

Sadly I see no other option for the club to release him in the summer.

Such a shame how it worked out because even in his 1st season apart from a couple of games on the right wing I dont even think he had fully settled. Certainly not showed his best.

I will remember him for his goal against Arsenal and his performance in the CL final

4 Seasons - 39 appearances 2 Goals

Could do with him now. I realise it's unrealistic as feck, but he is exactly what we need right now.

Anyone have any updates on the poor cnut ?

I know. The worst thing is that SAF has stopped even mentioning him. It's only supposed to be a fecking hamstring!

If, and I realise it's the most ridiculous/stupid/hopeful "if" ever, but if he was to come back soon he could play a massive part just when we need him. Sadly it aint gonna happen :(

Bearing in mind the title of the thread, I really hope the next bump is because someone actually has an "Update on Hargreaves". It's frustrating to see an "Update" thread appear on the home page when there isn't any update.

There's no point bumping it to ask the question. If there ever is an update someone will bump it for you. No bump. No update. Simples.

I've gotta agree, I get all giddy inside when I see this thread bumped.
