Owen Hargreaves | 2009/10 Performances

But unlike Hargreaves, Barry can actually play well in the middle. Something Hargreaves couldn't do to save his life for united bar a very few games.

I would say that Hargreaves has very rarely played in a middle two. He always played the base of the diamond for Bayern and England. A midfield three he would be great, he could be great in a midfield 2 but needs more time to get used to it.

If Barry can produce a performance in the world cup half as good as Hargreaves v Portugal I'll rest my case. As a pure DM Hargreaves is far more vital than Barry against the likes of Spain and Brazil, France even where the likes of Xavi/Iniesta, Kaka, and Gourcuff need to be shackled.

I'm guessing the estimation he may be ready for the Wolfsburg match was targetting a possible Champions League final against them.

I think Hargreaves is a (marginally) better player than Barry, but he's probably not better in a midfield two.
Barry has done a decent job there for England, although he has been woeful for City so far this season.

Carrick is a better player than both, however, and I don't understand his lack of opportunities. He's put in two performances in his limited time for England that are better than Barry has ever or will ever produce. The World Cup Round of 16 match against Ecuador and England's recent win over Germany in Berlin. He ran the show in both those matches, something Barry and Hargreaves are not capable of doing, good players though they may be.

Don't be getting silly. Hargreaves didn't carve a good career for himself by not being able to play in his natural position.

Maybe Hargo can reinvent himself as a regular rightback. Has all the qualities-pace, speed, toughness, pocitioning, good crosses, stamina for recovery, lung-bursting overlaps

Why would he bother though? He is quite capable of playing in his normal position..

People have forgotten how good Owen Hargreaves was.

It's a pity we're unlikely to ever see that player back again.

That's rubbish to be fair. Being the best English player at the World Cup in that position is hardly something Barry has ever done nor is likely to...As for United, short memory surely?

Hargreaves is a far more dedicated DM than Barry is and far better at harrying and tackling and just as good at releasing the break. Barry's probably a better technical footballer, but that doesn't make him a better DM at all. Roy Keane was technically inferior to Paul Scholes, but I know which one I'd want playing in DM....and he hasn't got a little ginger willy

Keane was more than just a DM that can only run and tackle. Keane can control games with his passing, not as good as Scholes, but effective all the same. Hargreaves never once showed that ability with us.

In a WC where the english was poor and most of its best players underachieved for whatever reasons. That "best english player in the WC" title for Hargreaves needs to be put into perspective

We have enough top class central midfielders that he would find himself competing with all of them (if everybody are available for selection).

Why he should bother? We've been paying him wages for two years when he's been injured, that should be reason enough for him to play where ever the feck he's told to play.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to introduce Owen Hargreaves to full-scale training.

Hargreaves has fully recovered from knee injury and is currently building up to the final steps needed to overcome before making a playing return.

Ferguson revealed: “Owen is doing most things [in training]. He’s doing work with the physios and possession training with us. It’s the confidence part to mark the big step forward in the competitive part of the training that needs to come now.”

Only news of the day on Hargreaves, it's from Tribal.

On a positive note it makes no mention of setbacks.

I think that was from Fergie's last conference at least a week ago. Title is misleading as it doesn't say he is ready to get back into full training.
There haven't been any setbacks, it's just taking longer than expected.

I'm beginning to think that Hargreaves playing any football this season would be a bonus and not to be expected.

Old news mate

just realised that this hargreaves is back in three weeks thread is 2 months old

Capello's just been interviewed on SSN....says he expects Hargreaves to be fit for the World Cup, and certainly hopes so, and displaying a definite willingness to pick him.

It is NOW officially 2 months. Maybe he returned and just forgot how to play football.

Apparently it's his own lack of confidence in his fitness which is holding him back which is quite annoying as you can't really put a timescale on psychological issues.

January target for Hargreaves
Van der Sar heads home for treatment on knee injury

Last updated: 18th December 2009

Sir Alex Ferguson now expects Owen Hargreaves to be back by the end of January after revealing Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has returned to the Netherlands for treatment on a knee injury.

Hargreaves has not played for United since September 2008 after undergoing an operation to cure a long-standing problem with his knees.

The England midfielder was originally pencilled in to return to the first team around the start of November, but he has yet to make his comeback.

There have been suggestions that Hargreaves is lacking the confidence to return to action, but Ferguson feels the former Bayern Munich ace is making progress.

"Owen's doing a bit better this week, and he's coming along slowly," said the United manager.

"Hopefully he'll be back at the end of January."
Good idea

Meanwhile, veteran keeper Van der Sar is likely to be out for another couple of weeks due to the knee injury he suffered in the 3-0 win over Everton last month.

Ferguson added: "Edwin is going back to Holland.

"It is a change of scenery for him and the Holland team doctor will have a look at the injury.

"He has never had an injury like this in his life before, so we think it is a good idea and expect him back in a couple of days."

United's defence is currently beset by injuries, but Ferguson is hoping Nemanja Vidic can shake off a calf problem to be available for Saturday's game at Fulham.

"We're waiting on Nemanja Vidic," continued Ferguson. "Hopefully he'll be OK for tomorrow, but he needs to train today."

Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown, Gary Neville, Jonny Evans and John O'Shea are defensive absentees for United, while Portuguese winger Nani is out for a further fortnight with the ankle injury picked up against Wolfsburg.
