The guy hasn't been fit since sept 2006

Exactly, we bought a complete crock for £20 million. Brilliant aint it.

the fact that during that first season he was at WORST on par with our other CM's speaks volumes.

You cant just say things and that makes them true.

Hargreaves during the 2007/2008 season fought niggling injuries as a result of his broken leg all season. He would get a run of games, start to find his legs and some form and go out with an injury for a week or two.

He didnt find any form in the centre of midfield. It was only at the end of the season, on the right hand side, when he found 'form'.

It was towards the end of the season when Hargreaves finally seemed to stay reasonably healthy, enough that he started to get that confidence and form that we brought him in for. It just so happened that he was playing as a right midfielder during this time.

No, it was because he was on the right that he found this form.

Battling recovery injuries, lacking confidence and trying to settle into the team in a new league = bad player right Sammie?

Playing in the centre of midfield = bad player

Finding some fitness, gaining confidence and settling into the team and getting comfortable = good player?

Playing on the right = good player

You've a special irrational hate for Hargreaves. So what is your point corky?

I have no hate for Hargreaves. He's probably a lovely guy. Why anyone would 'hate' a United player is beyond me.

Hargreaves had one good match at the WC, against Portugal when we were down to 10 men. He ran his socks off, and yes, was our best player that day. Scored his penalty to, did he not?

Then the British public voted him England player of the tournament

Says more about the British public thought of other player's efforts than it does about Hargreaves, to be honest. :D

I thought so! :D

Doesn't look good for Hargreaves.

Fergie casts serious doubt on Hargreaves' future

By Mark Ogden

Thursday February 04 2010

Alex Ferguson has raised serious doubts over the ability of Owen Hargreaves to return to top-level football this season by dropping the England midfielder from Manchester United's updated Champions League squad.
Ferguson, who named Hargreaves in United's squad for the group stages of the competition, had recently admitted his desire to involve the injury-ravaged 29-year-old in the last-16 tie against AC Milan this month.
But with the former Bayern Munich player now 16 months into a spell on the sidelines as a result of double knee surgery, Ferguson has effectively written Hargreaves out of his plans for the rest of the season by replacing him in his European squad with the Belgian defender Ritchie De Laet.
Uefa last night confirmed United had requested De Laet's elevation in place of Hargreaves. The Premier League champions have also named Senegalese forward Mame Biram Diouf in place of Danny Welbeck, who is on loan at Preston.
The omission of Hargreaves, who has not played a competitive fixture since September 2008, is a blow for English boss Fabio Capello, who had been prepared to hand the Canada-born player as much time as necessary to prove his fitness ahead of the World Cup.
Despite Hargreaves' latest setback, however, Capello is planning to meet him this month in an effort to gain the midfielder's perspective on his injury.
But with Ferguson deciding he cannot rely on Hargreaves against Europe's elite during the final three months of the season, there now appears to be no chance of him even being in contention for a late entry into Capello's 23-man squad.
Of more immediate concern for United and Hargreaves is when, or if, the £19m signing will overcome his injury problems sufficiently to play for the club again. On his arrival at Old Trafford in May 2007, Hargreaves signed a three-year contract with an option of a further 12 months. United have made no attempt to review the contract, with the club expecting Hargreaves to remain at United until June 2011.
With Hargreaves failing to make a comeback last August, and not even returning to the club from the Colorado base of surgeon Dr Richard Steadman until September, Ferguson then suggested that he would be able to call on his services for the final three Champions League group games.
Although Hargreaves emerged unscathed from a practice match last month, Ferguson has alluded to "confidence" issues preventing the player from taking the final step to competitive action.
Elsewhere, Real Madrid have hit back at Manchester City over the collapse of Argentina international Fernando Gago's proposed transfer to Eastlands on Monday.
"They had nothing prepared, not even one document signed," said Jorge Valdano, Real's sporting director. Gago's agent, Marcelo Lombilla, claimed City "used" the player. "They approached Madrid without even knowing there wasn't physically enough time to put something together," he said.
City are said to be perplexed at Real's stance, having only been offered the player on Monday afternoon, and at £8m more than their original £17m asking price. (Daily Telegraph, London)

Owen Hargreaves struggling to make World Cup finals

The agony continues for Hargreaves, who has been omitted from the United squad for the Champions League

Fabio Capello’s hopes of having Owen Hargreaves fit for the World Cup finals have suffered another huge blow after Sir Alex Ferguson removed the Manchester United midfield player from his Champions League squad.

Ferguson’s decision raises fresh doubts about the player’s chances of returning to action this season. Hargreaves has been sidelined for the past 16½ months after having operations on both knees to cure chronic tendinitis that has restricted him to 25 starts for United since his projected £20.2 million move from Bayern Munich in July 2007.

Ferguson, the United manager, claimed last week that he hoped to have Hargreaves available for the first leg of his team’s Champions League round-of-16 tie away to AC Milan on Tuesday week.

But the decision to replace him with Ritchie de Laet, a 21-year-old full back who has made only four starts, in the revised 25-man squad submitted to Uefa this week for the Champions League knockout phase is a worrying turn of events for United and England.

Ferguson included Hargreaves in his original 25 for the Champions League group stage in the belief that the player would be back at the start of November, but although Hargreaves had always had last month in mind as a more realistic return date, his failure to make even a reserve-team appearance by now is a cause for concern.

As the only world-class midfield anchorman available to Capello, Hargreaves would bring an added dimension to England’s midfield and give the Italian more options, but the chances of him being ready for South Africa appear to be fading fast.

Ferguson suggested last week that Hargreaves was suffering from a crisis of confidence after so long out. “Owen is alternating his training with the reserve and first-team squads, working for two days and then resting a day,” Ferguson wrote in his programme notes to preview the second leg of United’s Carling Cup semi-final against Manchester City at Old Trafford eight days ago. “It’s a matter of him regaining his confidence and when he is able to train every day, that will be the moment for him to return to match play.”

Hargreaves is contracted to United until June next year, but if he fails to prove his fitness this season, Ferguson may be forced into the transfer market for a defensive midfield player in the summer, a situation the manager hopes to avoid, given that the majority of his transfer budget is likely to be earmarked for at least one more striker, a creative midfield player and another defender, should Nemanja Vidic leave.

Hargreaves’s most recent appearance came in the 1-1 Barclays Premier League draw away to Chelsea in September 2008, since when Dr Richard Steadman, the world renowned knee surgeon, performed two operations and oversaw the player’s rehabilitation in the United States.

Rio Ferdinand’s appeal hearing over the increased ban he received for violent conduct is unlikely to take place before United’s league match away to Aston Villa on Wednesday. The defender was banned for three games for an incident involving Craig Fagan, the Hull City striker, during United’s 4-0 win last month and given an additional one-match suspension after an FA independent regulatory commission ruled that his decision to contest the charge was “frivolous”.

Ryan Giggs, the United midfield player, has said that Wayne Rooney is “getting nearer that group” of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Kaká, the players widely acknowledged to be the best in the world.

Fergie needs to buy another midfielder in the summer regardless of if Hargreaves recovers his confidence or not. Lets face it, Hargreaves has been a massive gamble from the very start. He's injury prone, and when all said and done perhaps the most expensive mistake the club will have ever made. Good player when he's fit - but in the last 5 years he's just never managed to be fit to play even half a season. I've always had the feeling we may end up getting really burnt on this one. And somewhere in Munich, ze Germans are laughing all the way to the bank.

Yeah, but at least we have the Champions League winners trophy?

Well you can convince yourself that we won the champions league solely because of Hargreaves and that offsets his purchase price and wages (i certainly don't. I think he was a vital part of the team but there were others played just as big, if not bigger role in the win).

But ultimately you have to look at his transfer and impact in totality. 16 million, 25 games. We're either very unlucky, or somebody in the medical team didn't do their job. It's not like we didn't know he had a poor injury record at Bayern either you know...

I think almost everyone wants him to come back, but realistically you just don't see him getting more then a year with us. I think he comes back next season. He's a completely different player to what we remember, and he gets released the next year and becomes one of those sad stories of really good players who got fecked because of their injuries.

Personally, I have given up on Hargreaves - i just don't see him coming back. He should just retire now so the club don't have to continue paying him for nothing.

Whoever approved his medical should be taken outside and shot too. Moron.

God, this is really disappointing news. Especially as it was reported earlier in the week that he was set to return very soon.

Hope is quickly fading...

Disappointing news and I don't think we are gonna see him play this season at all, let's hope he can play next season or else I think we should cut our losses

Kinell. I've given up following his progress. The times I've signed him up for my fantasy team whenever he's 3 weeks away, only to sell him a week later following a further set back...

I still want curly hair toooo!!!

He is still on our wages, release him from contract if he doesn't prove his fitness. Might sound harsh though but the club have shown enough patience with him and persisted him for last two years

A bit of a tragedy for the guy. I feel for him and truly hope he gets to play competitively again

It was quite a while back that Fergie was saying that it had got to the stage where most of it is psychological, so he must be a bit disappointed with the lack of progress over the past few months - what's the position re: insurance if he doesn't make it back? Maybe it has reached that stage?

I dont know about releasing him from his contract, but when does his current deal expire?

As for how good he is and what he could provide if he were to get fit - He'd be very handy in the champions league on the right of midfield once we have something to protect. Thats about it. And considering Nani and Valencia are in the midst of a great battle for the right wing position we probably need him less for that role now than ever before in his time at the club. As a backup right back he'd be fairly useful. But in central midfield he was useless.

The point of showing all that patience was to have him back and contributing. Not panicking about the length of his recovery by releasing him.

We were all set to sign Senna for £3.5 million werent we? Before we fecked him around trying to get a deal done for Hargreaves, and he told us where to stick it.

Urm we were about to sign Senna the season we signed Carrick.. Not the season we signed Hargreaves.. If you remember the season we signed Hargo we signed Nani and Anderson as well and our biz was finished very early.. Where as the Carrick transfer was done a little later in the mix and thus the whole saga of Senna played out..

Bayern must be pissing their sides

There is a rumour going around that Ribery has a similar long term problem with his knee and if its true I am sure Bayern will look to sell ASAP..

I think it's not the end of the world for Hargo. We don't know the reasons behind SAF making that decision. It could be that Hargo will return this season but SAF is not willing to risk it since he's had a lot of defensive injuries this season and Vidic is still out, thus adding De Laet to the list instead of Hargo. I think SAF knows there is a chance that he will make it back this season but it could be too late for him to gain his form and make an impact on our UCL campaign. I honestly think that this was the thinking behind the decision to drop and it does not mean he will not be back this season. We still have the Premiership to compete in and he might get a run if he is fit enough. SAF knows that he has to give Hargo a run if we want to offload him in the summer, else chances are nobody will go for him.

It's a shame, but it's no surprise at all.

It was obvious he wasnt going to play this season.

The question is will be ever play again? I'm not so sure.

We've been paying him a fecking fortune every week and he's not kicked a ball since Sept 2008!! When his contract expires he's got to be released.

Sorry, but this was one of the worst singings ever.

He had a shocking injury record at Bayern. I belieive he was only available for just over half of the games in his last 4 years there.

Hes had problems that include thigh, calf, leg break, adductor problems and now this chronic knee problem.

£17mil down the drain.

Not his fault though, i really feel for the guy.

Didn't Solskjaer donate a lot of his wages to charity while he was injured? Legend.

I understand your point mate, but Hargreaves was actually the best player for England during the last WC. He wasn't the best from the worst, his performances were at the level of the competition.

And I also believe Hargo is very underrated. When he is fit as someone said before, he is top class. A lion on the midfield, I would love to see him back, he will give us more order and strengh, it would be easy for us to connect the defensive part with the offensive. (Besides he is very good at free kicks and he could be a solution to create more chances from set pieces)

Maybe the short-term memory disease doesnt help, but it's also true that he couldn't stay fit for too much time at United. That's maybe the reason about the question mark which has been created around him.

When He comes back, He will have the opportunity to change and polish out all doubts. I can't see it different because I know about the football attributes of Hargreaves and I've faith on him
.

Doesn't really look like happening.

How much do you reckon our insurance premiums are for him?

When's his contract up? Next summer? How much is he on at the moment? 70k? It may be difficult for him to secure a new contract with us.

Mame Biram cannot take Welbecks place. Welbeck was on the b-list. Mame hasn´t been in the country or club for 3 straight years!
He might be in instead of Macheda!
