I am not an expert on bombs, but for any IED, you would need to have shit loads of explosive to have any sort of major impact..

and such loads cannot be brought into the stadium and be in packages. am I being stupid here??

Sadly, none of what you say here is true.

My brother worked in bomb disposal for the British Army, based out of RAF Northolt he covered London & South East of England, the police don't have their own bomb disposal. If something looks really suspect they call the army in who will usually do a controlled explosion if they agree it is really suspect.
The Met 100% have their own expo teams.

Just got home... Crazy afternoon. Feel for the Bournemouth fans and those that came from afar, 4 hours for me is nothing in comparison! Right call to call it off of course... Can't take chances with this sort of stuff.

Feck knows why Daniel Taylor is saying the club only told supporters at 3:20... We were told at about 3 it was abandoned.

If it's an actual attempt at killing people, which currently I find doubtful (thankfully), then it's an incredibly intricate attempt. How do they know there are gas pipes there? Really strange.

Dunno, if they managed to get a copy of old trafford autocad drawings then not difficult to figure it out.

Maybe LvG has had to contend with Dennis Hoppers's voice in his ear all season threatening, "If your team has more than 3 shots on target in the next 90 minutes, the bomb in the bogs..."

Just got home, was in my seat at the back of tier 3 in the north stand when they announced the evacuation. A bit tense but everyone was very calm leaving, hopefully it's a false alarm.

Colour of gas pipes should be different.

Most likely it's the bomb squad that is referred to as military.

If not, then they'll be helping the police outside to keep order.

Nothing to read into.

Exactly. I can't understand why Collymore was getting such a kicking in here. Bomb Squad are military, the Police don't possess such expertise.

What was the wording of the announcement?

When it says it's attached to a pipe, do they not just mean a pipe bomb? As opposed to it being hooked up to Old Trafford's actual gas pipe?

I think they mean connected to an actual pipe with the intention of using the gas flowing through it to magnify the explosion

Really, you don't have bomb squads in the Police?

Scary to think what could've happened. Brilliant response from the police to deal with the situation.

I was thinking that the pipe is the bomb and the phone detonates it? Not that they'd attached a bomb to the existing piping.

It must be. Why else would we have a controlled explosion?

Because its better to do it and find out its not than not do it and find out it is.

As soon as they found a suspect package there was a 99% chance that there would be a controlled explosions.

Collymore is a complete and utter arse. I don't care if he has inside knowledge about what's going on, he is using a terror-related incident to try to get more people to listen to his radio show.

It would only have been assembled once inside though.
Fair enough. Still should've done better considering they search everyone. Jacket off, that gets searched, then a full pat down.

Really hope they catch the cnut who did it. He'll only end up trying again.

Just the tannoy lady saying the match has been abandoned and to make our way away from the ground

I imagine this was met with a lot of confused looks/sounds? Just intrigued about the whole scenario and how well it was handled.

Really, you don't have bomb squads in the Police?

Nope. Despite what other "experts" in here will tell you. We have one of the best, if not the best, bomb squad in the world. It's military and it learned a lot of skills from the amount of ordnance the Luftwaffe dropped on London.
