Onana has not worked out. We need a new keeper.

Onana is shit, but I wouldn't put that goal on him tbh.

I thought Onana has what DDG lacked but so far I have not seen much difference in those areas. Distribution has not been outstanding and he sticks to the line more than DDG. What's worse was he does not appear to even have the shot stopping ability of an average premier league gk. We are so screwed by spending big pounds on him and that is definitely on ETH. He needs to go for that alone.

Dude needs to stop fecking guessing on shots like they are pens. Even his big save he made he almost wrong foots himself by guessing

So glad we have a PROGRESSIVE keeper who starts incredible attacks with his unbelievable passing. Really improved us. I'm sure there are numbers people will produce in order to convince me I didn't see what I just saw.

De Gea was done. This clown is worse.

Outside of the occasional long range pass that comes off what does Onana bring that we, and it pains me to say it, didn’t have with De Gea or Henderson ? Both De Gea and Henderson are better shot stoppers, better with handling and better reflexes.

Yes I do remember De Gea’s mistakes last season and the ones over the prior few years too and yes I do remember Henderson is a complete prick but they are both far better at the basics than Onana and in Henderson’s case just as good with his feet other than the occasional long pass, we wasted £100+ million on Onana and Mount that could have gone on what’s actually needed.

Never been impressed by him. That is why I have doubts about his quality as a goalkeeper.

With goalkeeper, I mean someone who can save goals. Not be good with feet which I don't care about. A goalkeeper is there to save goals.

I hope he learns to be a better goalkeeper.

Played well second half and even first half played one or two excellent passes. He's not good at stopping the ball going in the net though.

If he wasnt good villa would have won the game by 5-3. Made some excellent saves and his passing was good

Which is basically his main job?

When did passing become more important for a goalkeeper than actually, you know, keeping the ball from going into his goal?

Feel pretty confident that this thread will age very poorly.

Onana’s instrumental for playing out 11 vs 10 from the back and is better than nearly all of our outfielders right now at playing under heavy pressure. There were several times tonight when Onana did his job perfectly at committing Watkins, before cutting out one or two further Villa players with his pass, yet Evans or Mainoo fumbled quickly progressing the ball further with their next pass. Onana is gonna be a big part of this team reaching their ceiling once better players are more regularly playing with him.

He’s making a lot of goalkeeping errors, yet his saving data across the season isn’t terrible even when you take those into account.

Of all ETH’s signings, I feel more confident about Onana’s next ten years than anyone else’s, whether here or elsewhere.

One is all you need. Like a cock push up.
damn..

Anyway. Got a taste of what ball playing Gk can do, and it feels really nice to see.

If Onana can't make it here (hopefully he will), i'd want the next Gk still a ball playing one.

It was so clear even from watching 15 mins of the highlight reel .. his handling was so poor even during Inter days. Always seem to push the ball into dangerous areas. Not really aerially imposing.

His passing / composure is a huge step up but might as well play Bruno at GK if that's all we care about.

I’ll be interested to see him in front of a consistent defense. But I can’t help but think he’s technically woeful at most things your average keeper does with ease.

He consistently costs us goals and his ball playing doesn’t make up for it. It’s like we start every game with -1. Give the other lad a chance.

Not sure today was on him. Defenders should be heading the ball out for the first goal and closing down the player on the second.

Maybe, but he was slow to react, unfortunately. He was extremely well protected second half.

He looked lost after the second goal, put a simple pass out for a throw and gave some absolute hospital passes to Mainoo at knee level surrounded by villa players at times too. But in the second half he started spraying the ball about again. He had one save to make I think that he made an absolute meal out of and put it right back into danger, but that's sort of par for the course with Onana at the minute.

Would be really helpful if our players didn't keep giving cheap free kicks away on the edge of our box. Defending set pieces is clearly not a strength of ours.

No first goal he doesnt move. Villa targeted him. If that was DDG he would have been slated on here. He doesnt command his box, a key failing with DDG we were meant to be addressing

I'm sorry but he didn't make a single excellent save. This nonsense gets trotted out every time he makes a couple of standard saves to defend the guy.

He made a couple of standard saves you'd expect any Premier league level goalkeeper to make. One of those standard saves he done his usual displaying absolutely zero control over where a rebound goes; with it looping up in the air right back in the danger zone and luckily to where one of our players was.

He's a liability. First goal just displays his terrible technique once again, not anticipating the ball coming through the crowd and just got caught with his pants down. Starting every game with a 50% chance your keeper will chuck at least one in really isn't a good base for a solid team. For me a couple of pinged long balls doesn't make up for that.

I don’t think you’re going to get you job back, Dave. :wenger:

This guy is woeful. Makes even simple saves look difficult. Why does he have to jump 6 feet in the air to save a shot that is chest height? Consistently parries the ball back into the danger area. Even some of his passes out to the edge of the box yesterday were hospital balls. Not learnt from getting Casemiro sent off against Galatasaray.

Complete liability.

The main Onana problem is that the whole team is effected whenever he gets the ball as he's a disaster waiting to occur.
It rubs on to the players and the whole stadium.

I’m all for a ball playing keeper but this guy is not it. He flaps, jumps more than the ball, puts the ball back for a rebound, very poor aerially as well. Also doesn’t come off the line more.

I don’t like Emi Martinez but he looked liked a proper keeper yesterday. We are going to find out sooner rather than later that this guy is not going to cut it here

I won’t write him off yet but he needs a lot of coaching on shot stopping which is a bit of a problem considering the money we paid for him.

He's a goalkeeper. His main function is to stop the opposition from scoring. He's not very good at that so far. His qualities with the ball at his feet are negated by his almost comical handling and positioning as a goalkeeper. A keeper that's good with the ball at his feet is a game changer provided he's at least average at the core competencies of the goalkeeping craft.

Data can be used in all sorts of ways and manipulated to fit ones own views. The lack of security he transmits cannot be quantified and every time he has to grab the ball there is a palpable sense in the stadium that something bad is going to happen. If we as fans feel that way, I don't want to imagine what his defenders feel.

I hope you're right about him being a good signing for the future. But he has to improve. A lot. We need a goalkeeping coach that can teach him some fundamentals and get him in the right mindset.

Yep, playing with a gaffe prone goalkeeper is like running with diarrhea.

Yep, he’s at an age (& price) where he should be entering his prime - not requiring coaching on some big deficiencies. Hoping he comes right but losing more and more faith by the game.
