Olympic Medal Table watch

Not at all

One possible boxing medal, third in the athletics table. If it wasn't for the swimming, and Phelps, it would have been a very poor Olympics. Still, getting buried by China in the official table makes this a poor games for the US.

No doubt a lot of feck ups by are idiot sprinters, judges fecked the US in boxing. I just want to win the basketball gold

I just want to win the basketball gold

Who cares about the basketball, seriously. Its nothing more than a second rate minor sport in practically every other country and the US should win it every time with ease. I think Americans are desperate for real international competition, and they confuse the Olympics with professional world championship type events.

Couldn't you use the same argument about second-rate minor sports for volleyball, team handball, field hockey, and water polo as well? Any team sport that isn't association football, rugby football, gridiron football (USA), or baseball (Dominican Republic) is probably not the most popular team sport in any given country.
I think, however, that you might find that there are some fine basketball fans in countries like Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, Italy, Greece, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, and China which, unlike the UK, seem to have some talented athletes who can actually play the game and better domestic leagues.

Basketball is pretty much a second rate sport in all the countries you mentioned. Its not about fans, its the level of the players. Americans getting all giddy about beating patsies is highly amusing. It would be like the English enjoying a football contest against the Faroe Isles.

BTW - it would make my fecking Olympics if the "Redeem team" fell on their asses and somehow lose the gold......and I am American ;)

Aren't England the best team in the world, the English press seems to think so? It would be like England winning an international tournament.

No you're not

To be fair, the Americans winning at Basketball is a bit like us Brits winning at Snooker. Football is too much of a global sport to be considered a comparison.

No you are dead wrong. The English media do not get all giddy about beating crap opposition, they usually get slated no matter who they play or how they win. You just don't get it do you? Basketball is only a serious sport in the US, and we should win the gold at a fecking stroll.

And I am American.

This is not true. Also, it's not even in the top 2 here, reckon it would in a decent amount of countries top 3 team sports.

I am not sure about that.

For example Australia are the FIBA Oceania Champs. Basketball is a game very a little practiced by the Australians and in the schools they prefer to practice Netball( specially the girls). In Sydney, there are volleyball nets on the Beaches of Bondi & Manly; even so the game doesn't attract a lot of attention, except during international championships.

You might find that basketball isn't a "second rate sport" in the countries I named. Not the most popular, but that doesn't mean the right athletes aren't playing the game.
There are some damn fine athletes playing basketball, many of whom also spent some time playing NCAA hoops, the NBA, and several other high paying leagues. As you may recall from the NBA, one needs around 2 "superstars," 3 rather good players, and around 3 "role players" to be a factor come playoff time. To insult the talents of a lot of the foreign players is not necessarily a sign of intelligence or knowledge. That said, yes, the US should win, but as with the allegedly talented English football team, there's a reason why we play the game on the court/field and not on paper.

Who insulted the talent of foreign players? For the most part the sport is minor in other countries and other sports get taught in schools. Australia were one of the better basketball teams at the Olympics yet it is way down the pecking order over there.

Swing, and MISS!

Oh Alex, you need a good old fashioned Mancunian sarcasm lesson. See your original statement wasn't dissimilar to the quote I used, and very similar to what everyone will think when they read it. You get, NO?

Personally I think its a bit bogus that yahooUS has USA as number 1 in the medals table based on they have more medals in total, it really should be about gold 1st as it is in the table shown above

Edit: Although as it stands right now, if you allocated 3pts for gold, 2 for silver and 1 for bronze, both China and USA are on 200 pts exactly
