They are under performing. They should finish on 35+ golds, which is looking a stretch now. China will probably finish on 45+ golds, which is about 8 -10 more than they expected.
Women's swimming did fairly poor imo
Not as badly as the boxers, they stink. The US might have a problem topping the table in the future of they remove eight swimming events.

They are already talking about removing 8 of the 32 swimming events. Really, why do they need so many relays an variations of the same events.
Hopefully Philips Idowu will bring home the gold in the triple jump.

What events
Before that, they really need to get rid of syncronized swimming and diving, which would take 6 needless activities out of the Games.
What they need to do is remove everything but the athletics. Who watches the other shit?
Whats the deal with Synchro swimming, why not have dancing, ballet or break dancing, ive never got it. It must be a perv thinng. Not not that I mind to much, mind.
For example, why do you need a 200m IM medley and a 400 IM medley, drop one and that is two events gone. Then there is a 100m freestyle relay and 200m freestyle relay, drop one and another two vents are gone.
They could probably lose one or two freestyle events as well.
I'd agree with you, but the major sites covering the Games here in the US separate 5 sports from the rest as "major"--track (athletics to you folks), swimming, gymnastics, basketball, and beach volleyball. I suspect most of the folks watching beach volleyball aren't there for the spikes, sets, and serves.
The greedy scum over at the IOC need to reevaluate what should be in the Olympics and what "sports" need to be culled out of an overly expensive quadrennial waste of the taxpayers money. Should we really have shooting, badminton, and equestrian events in the Olympics? Now there is talk of trying to add women's boxing for the London Games. Just what we need, corruption and inept judging in women's fisticuffs to complement the fraud that is men's boxing.

Why not just have a single bike race instead of the time trial, road race and all of the velodrome based races? They are the same thing after all. Same goes for the rowing. Individual vs 4s and 8s, with or without a cox, skulls or sweep.

The swimming is the highlight of the Olympics for a very significant portion of viewers and rightly so. The level of dedication required to be a top level swimmer puts most sports people to shame.

And the point is the IOC are reviewing the swimming event and looking at ways of reducing it down to 24 gold medals.

The Aussie public aren't reacting well to being out medaled by a sporting minnow (with 3 times the population) like GB. Apparently the British Paralympic squad is better funded than the Aussies Olympic squad so I suspect that funding will be increased fairly heavily soon if Labour want to stay in power. The Aussies love their sport and we have underperformed in cycling, men's swimming and rowing. We have also sacrificed the youth development of swimming to get the women's team to this Olympics in relatively good shape.
