He does, but him opting for Mata as our first sub was disappointing.

Mata, imo, was our worst attacker in preseason, whereas Greenwood, Gomes and Chon g all impressed.

Now, I know it's only preseason, and I'm not saying he should start them, but I think it'd be preferable to have them on the bench instead of a player we know will do nothing.

Still, overall, I was encouraged by our performance. Especially the 1st half.
Yeah. I think Gomes deserves a chance in the team ahead of Lingard. His time is now or never at United. Its not if we have world class players ahead of him.

Whats the point of a youth system if we don't give them a chance?

 Ole himself said both are designated penalty takers but caf expert knows who was the designated penalty taker.

Also it's amazing how you were in cave when we won 4-0 against chelsea and now came out all guns blazing when he drew against Wolves. Jose fan boys are something else
Was barely online the whole week, but whatever fits your agenda.

Curious to see any other example of a team that has 2 designated penalty takers on the pitch at the same time?

They are not children. They can decide who takes the penalty among them without guidance from Ole.

Clearly not. Rashford is great at them so he should take them. Scored a great penalty last week and scored that very high pressure penalty againt PSG.

Ole needs to tell them Rashford takes the penalties because he is the best at them.

Actually thought he did really well, if he can get us playing like how we did in the first half on a more consistent basis then fair play, because as far as I'm concerned we dominated it and looked a far better unit in that first half than we have in a long time. I mean the pressing and hounding was brilliant to watch at times.

We were shattered by the second half though and I don't think he countered the Traore sub well enough, the 88 minute subs were a bit pointless to. However, i see positives from it.

Eh? Check ManUtd's europa league game and who took the penalties when he won 4-0. We had Rooney in that game, he gave one to Martial and one to Pogba (IIRC).

Loved how Ole bigged up Mason before the season starts.. yet puts him on 88th when we need a goal. So much for a natural goalscorer.

He's hyped the kids, the cafs hyped the kids, but truth is we hardly going to see them play.

That and sub timings is my only frustration so far.

Nope.

They basically had one attack that lasted a couple of minutes where they hit the post and then scored.

Other than that they had 11 men behind the ball.

Yet apparently we got outplayed 2nd half. People on this forum are an absolute joke sometimes.

That doesn't really answer my question. The game wasn't won against inferior opposition. Every team has a designated penalty taker (one) and he usually takes the responsibility.

It will be a long season and you will have plenty of criticism to defend then. Wish you good night.

I'm starting to figure him out. He knows how to set a team up in advance of a game, but his in game management is pretty horrific. We're relentless in our pursuit of Plan A but when that doesn't work he can't make subs and his half time team talk seems like it consists of handing out the oranges. If we don't look like winning in the first half, we don't win.

I'm not sure if that makes him a good manager or not.

I feel the same. From last year and up to now that is my feeling too. Different games need different players at different parts of the game. I have no issues with the way we started. But the moment the equilibrium switched to Wolves he needed to make a change. And the first change he needed to me was to bring on Matic. People would say he is crap and I would agree with them most of the time but today was a day we needed him only for Pogba to push forward. Take Lingard off for Matic, take James off for Gomes and push Gomes as the second striker behind Martial. Just having more strikers is not going to score goals or open up defences.
Then our set piece has been crap. We have Maguire one of the best headers of the ball and Pogba and Scott who also are good headers of the ball and we cannot even get one corner right. It seems that we never practice any set pieces and neither do we seem to practice and passing in diamond either. Football is all triangles

Like captain every team should have a designated penalty taker. It also grows confidence when that players goes on a run.

Having penalty takers to rotate is a mental decision, especially when Pogba missed three last season and we were creating very little in the second half.
Pogba won us the penalty from some individual brilliance, had a solid game. Whereas Rashford flattered to deceive, bar the assist he didn't do anything to swing the game in our favour, which is what we need from our senior players.

Pogba in this instance is right to take the penalty, he took the game by the scruff of the neck in that phase of play. Poor penalty, we move on.

I tbink thats just Glazer propaganda.

Ole wanted more than 3 players.
No Ole said many times he was happy with the squad. Manchester United decided not to complete Dybala and Eriksen signings because they didn't want to be here. Ed would have loved both for marketing so it seems likely it was Ole who decided on the policy of only wanting players who really really really want to play for the club.

How did we deserve to win if we only played well in the first half? We shut them out for 45 minutes but from the moment the 2nd half started, they were all guns blazing and we panicked so much that we forgot how to play in the final third. Sure, we missed a pen, but we had a massive drop in our collective performance in the 2nd half. You can't expect to win away games in that manner.
Because apart from a 20 minute period in the 2nd half, we were by far the more threatening team and had enough situations to have scored another goal. We kept them from having any meaningful possession while we moved the ball quite well and created a lot of half chances that we could have scored off if we had got that final ball right.

Deserved the win, happy with the performance overall.

I think he needs to put lots of emphasis on polishing the passing game though. I don't know if we simply lack the individual quality to pass the ball properly, but it's increible how many times we give the ball away for free.

We are improving something at least trying to play on the floor first before hoofing it. We don't seem to panicunder pressing, and we try to find the way out in a clean way. The intentions are there but the execution is not the best yet, some margin to improve there.

The rest is fine overall, dominated totally the first half, deserved to score the first goal and get the second before their goal, that would have given us bigger margin for the rest of the game.

Now it's important to reassure those good sensations against Palace and get the three points, no margin to fail there. Old Trafford has to be a fortress and the team should play with confidence at home. Last season we had shaky performances at OT and it has to change if we want to get at least a top 4 place.

If we can hit 7 points out of 9 with a positive atmosphere around the team I'll be satisfied with our start of the season. It's a different feeling now compared to how we ended the last one, but it's key to continue in the same way.

I gave you example and you are pulling straw man. Good night.

It's hilarious to defend against these criticism though, "why Pogba took penalty"

Especially when the players keeping them out are, quite frankly, rubbish.

it's not like Foden at City where City's first teamers are all absolute quality. It's Mata and Lingard...

This is our touch heatmap from today, look at the huge void in between the sidelines. We desperately need more through the middle when playing versus parked bus but for that we need better ball retention. Next up is one v Chelsea where we held very little ball and this tells another story

For comparison this is Touch Heatmap of Man City v Spurs.

I'm annoyed we didn't win because of the penalty miss.

But we were pretty decent I thought and it's not a bad point.

People need to calm down.

Shocking how negative some people are on this board. It’s the fifa generation I suppose.

We deserved to win and almost did had lingard and Pogba not missed their chances.

Tough away match and we showed we can control it for 80 minutes. Not perfect but definitely more encouraging that it takes a worldie and an off day in front of goal to best us away. Looking forward to how the lads react in the next match. That’s the key for me.

Pogba's brilliance has nothing to do with who should take the penalties when one is won. He already missed 3 last year. It's not like he's brilliant at it. Rashford is yet to miss one (given not a big sample) and was on a high note already scoring one this season.

He can have a shit game but still be the better penalty option which I believe he is.

The overreaction by some is embarrassing, like seriously, get a fecking life, will you.

Valid mild criticism: Subs earlier and choose a designated PK taker. Hardly enough to bash Ole, very minor issues. I watched the whole game and feel very positive, id have absolutely taken 4 points from Chealsea and Wolves. Remember, we are top 4 challengers, not title contenders.

The signs look good. Like Ole said in his presser, its still pre-season until after the international break, lots of hard work to be done until the schedule gets too hectic.

While the reaction is overboard in places, I think it mainly stems from the fact that we didn’t give Wolves an inch in the first half. Adama Traore made a massive difference in the second half and our players lost their heads for 10-15 mins. Problem is, Ole failed to react in any way. It was clear that we needed to bring on fresh legs, because we simply were not going to get a goal.

We should have won that game. Wolves away will be tough for every team in the league and that’s where we can get a lead on others. Just depressing at how poor we were in the second half after the absolute domination of the first.

Pogba was also terrible in general, not including his penalty (good save).

Work in progress and there are some positives from us but he could have waited 5 more mins to make the last subs.

I'd have liked earlier subs and I must say I dislike penalty drama. Designate a taker and maybe a second choice off the pitch and stick to it, and if your first guy misses one you review the pecking order post-match. This arsing about, grabbing the ball, chatting etc. is a sideshow we could do without.

That said I'm happy enough with him today, set us up nicely to go mostly at their right side but as proved by the goal we're capable of switching attackers across the pitch to pop up elsewhere and combine.

I thought we were good and drew the game thanks to a worldie and a penalty miss. I’m really looking forward to the whole season and seeing where this team can go. Not many negatives from me tonight.

Pogba was confident after winning it, so I dont see any reason why he shouldn't take it. High note? He was dreadful tonight and offered nothing when we needed players to stand up and win us the game, Pogba did that.

Tactics were good, but too many players had a bad game today.

Only complain is that he should have subbed off Lingard and James much earlier.

Oh is that all? just around 280m. Ed will sort that out this January.
Top class sarcasm, hope it made you feel smart.

Ed will not sort anything out but thats not Ole’s fault. With all the handicaps, he has managed to build a structure that gives us some hope and a semblance of a plan on the pitch. We need to add some quality to make the system more efficient and to yield better results.

It's been a difficult start to the season fixture wise and we've come out of it with 4 points.

Win on Saturday and it's been a good start.

Thank you Ole for giving me a team I can get behind again.

Gladly take 4 points out of these first two tricky games.

I honestly used to consider myself a pretty glass half empty kind of fan before I found Redcafe.

Now in comparison I'm delusionally optimistic.

How good they were today has nothing to do with how good they are at taking penalties. Pogba for instance has missed 3 last season, why even considering him for penalty duties this season?

On a side note Pogba also didn't have one of his best games today.

Team selection was good.

Thought we could have thrown the subs on earlier though. Greenwood and perreira weren’t given time to make an impact.

Mata was a poor choice to replace lingard too. I’d rather see Gomes. He can’t be worse. Really.
