I've been out of the loop on United, but were there any external/contractual reasons why this couldn't have been done at the end of the season to get the whole picture?

Not seen anything, but can come up with a couple on my own.

- Easier to do contract negotiations with players (De Gea).
- Plan for the summer.
- Nice gesture to Molde, their season starts this weekend.
- Everyone knew it was going to happer, why wait? How would we benefit from waiting?

Norwegian season starts on Sunday. Probably wanted to be fair to Molde.

After PSG I think the board decided to appoint Ole. As a previous poster suggested, I think they took the international break to sit down and discuss all matters in the absence of having training and preparing for matches.

Makes perfect sense all round.

Edit: Yeah, guy above just beat me to it.

United fans are very weird. I’ve seen people on Twitter against the appointment because they felt the club took a cheaper option.

Seriously? :wenger:

I initially voted for Zidane but changed my mind after Ole turned our season around and started making me believe again.

Pep and Zidane inherited fantastic teams. Pochettino has better players than us but what has he won?

If Ole is backed properly this summer he could be our next big thing.

One thing is certain. If there's the slightest indication that he isn't fully backed this summer, United fans will turn savagely on Ed and the owners.

In fact, should he struggle, I predict most fans will look at Ed before they look at Ole. This isn't ol' Maureen, who many detested before he was appointed. This is a United legend who goes into the job with a huge amount of goodwill, even from those who aren't 100% in agreement with the appointment.

@Damien I feel this thread should have a new win draw lose record like the old thread did, starting from today hopefully with a 1W 0D 0L .

Exactly this.

I did the same with the voting too.

Looking forward to Ole’s first signings and hopefully getting some ridiculously over paid players out as well.

Indeed. One thing myself and dad talked about when he was appointed as caretaker. The matc going fans will never turn against Ole, especially when you consider the continued support for the previous 3 managers.

I'm already pitchforks out for Ed. No joke mate that shite he pulled giving Jose a new contract and then not backing him in the summer was a fecking disgrace. And I hate Jose but you don't not even try improve after our best league finish post Fergie.

If he doesn't get Ole like 4 recognized starters he will have failed him from minute one. Could maybe get away with 3 depending on how things play out. CB RW and CM/DM are compulsory.

You should listen to yourself, that's you saying that little Spurs have a better squad than us (and we have the biggest wage bill in the PL).
With delusions like yours you should be on rawk!

People keep saying he hasn't got the qualifications to be our manager but at least he's won league championships (albeit at a lower level). Moyes' CV was nowhere near Ole's and Poch has never won anything, just managed to get top 4. LVG and Maureen may have had better CVs but look at the mess they made of the job.

Also, for those saying it's the wrong time, maybe it's because contract negotiations and new signings need to know who's going to be at the helm. Waiting until end of season leaves an awful lot of doubt for what the future might be.

You seriously think that any other PL club would've employed Ole, Spurs maybe kick Poch out and take on the manager of Moulde, the dippers replace the gurner with Ole?

Nah, we'll compete with him in charge, because with our squad we'd complete with any manager the players are actually willing to play for, but I see no reason to get giddy about incoming honours any time soon.

It's not quite that though is it? Ole did manage the youth set up for a while before he managed Molde. Other teams have promoted from within and had great success with it. It worked for the mickeys for a long time until they hired Souness.

Time will tell whether Ole will work out.

Why are Ole's achievements with Molde constantly talked down?

The quality of the league means that while he's competing against inferior players/teams to the elite leagues but it stands to reason he's also working with lesser players himself, so still had to use tactical nous and motivational skills to achieve what he did. He also had them punching above their weight in the Europa league. It not like winning the title with Celtic where you have a huge advantage in the quality of your squad.

And developing talents, Braut Haaland comes to mind, he was linked to United last summer.
Totally different than Celtic, because Molde is in a league where Rosenborg has been winning like 2 out of 3 years since the early 90s, and could pick the top players from every other team in the league.
I'd say it's more like winning the SPL with another team than Celtic.

The Cardiff failure has been used against him quite a few times too, but those who knew Cardiff, also knew it was an impossible job at the time. Bad squad, horrible owners, was doomed from the start.
The only bad thing he did at Cardiff, in my opinion, was to take the job, he was too desperate to try to manage a PL club.

Good tactical switch by Ole today in moving Mata once we were getting dominated. Key to our resurgence in the game.

One could say Molde was the Aberdeen of Norway:devil:

Yeah the Cardiff job was completely inappropriate for him. It’s a completely different situation to one he spent his career in.

This seems like an absolutely ridiculous comparison but bare with me. I doubt Zidane can do the job like people like Big Sam do at relegation threatened clubs - but to that same point those kind of managers obviously in no way would be able to accomplish what Zidane did at Madrid.

Football is such a vast game you have characters that suitable to different levels and situations. Ole isn’t suited to fighting relegation, he’s suited to higher levels clubs actively competing; that’s his bread and butter and henceforth why he done a lot better with Molde and United.

I agree but at least Ole has an academic understanding of where the club has been going wrong and has a plan to deal with it.

For example,

1. He has mentioned fitness, several times.
2. He has suggested that we need to spend less.
3. He says we need to play a more progressive game.
4. He says we need to promote youth.
5. He says that mentality plays at big part.

I think the club jumped the gun in appointing him but he will do a better job at putting together a balanced team and squad than the last three managers.

We will know how willing the club are to support him soon enough. If they do not then there will be trouble ahead. We need between 4 - 6 new first team players over the next 12 calendar months IMO.

1 or 2 CB's
1 RB
1 RW
1 or 2 CM's or 1 CM + 1 AM

It's not delusional, it's true. Just because they're a "smaller" club can't mean they're not better.

I feel that too. Nobody can't convince me that he is better solution than Poch. But difference is some 30-40 so i am aware that club did logical move and hired him.

I'll decide how worried I am come the end of the summer window. If we're not in the CL and we have another stinker when it comes to buying and selling, we'll be setting Ole up for one hell of a difficult job.

Really think the board should have waited to see the season out.

It's almost as if they quickly hired Ole, so it could all still be seen as an appointment by the overwhelming popular demand of the fans.

I was personally of the opinion that today's game (after 2 losses) would be a big measure for where this team actually was, but then when they went ahead, and hired him I wasn't sure if that would serve to regalvanize the players, and cloud reaction to poor recent form a tad. More worryingly it didn't...

I get the feeling with Ole the board probably feel, it won't be their fault if it all goes wrong (fans demanded he be hired) and he will be easier to control (greater success is greater clout, and power after all) and less demanding, financially.

As long as he can challenge for a top four place they might feel that the fans will remain loyal to him for the foreseeable future because he is so popular.

Just can't work out why they didn't wait a few games at least. As with each game that passes fans will get a better idea of where this team actually is, and whether or not, it was a good run, or a good team/manager.

Not to say Ole won't be a good manager, just that it's insanity to believe a team, or manager is suddenly great because he is top of the leauge by Christmas. If that were the case Brendon Rogers would be considered Elite.

Even one good season proves very little as Claudio Ranieri will tell you.

But don't worry, my saying this is almost a guarantee, he will go ahead and end up contradicting me!

You think Poch will/can have same effect like Ole? The guy said trophies are for egos ffs.

Time for Ole to introduce his own philosophy, I want to see more free-flowing football as he did when he took over and I loved that style of play before Lecister City game where we seem to be regressing with style of play but still creates chances. For away big games, I'd be okay with counterattacking, a bit like Bayern Munich 2013.
Thing is, do we know Ole wants that kind of football? For example, our first game under Ole he barely had any influence. McKenna and Carrick took over. That was our most progressive performance. Little by little we've gone into a counter attacking team no matter the opposition, with hardly any pressing, and much slower passing.

It's a good question to ask and I'm not trying to sour people on Ole. I'm still positive about Ole. I'm just trying to figure out what he wants his side to be like.

Was a good win today. We started really poor, got dominated at home by fecking Watford. The players need a kick up the arse more than anything, not the performance we wanted to see after two losses and an international breal, albeit getting the 3 points.

Yeah I sort of agree with some of this stuff. Don’t get me wrong happy for Ole but I think we should have waited until the end of the season. I don’t get what announcing it now has done.

It’s pretty clear performances have dipped quite a bit which makes it look like there was just that initial manager bounce reaction and now the players are reverting to old ways of showing lack of workrate, composure etc, thus the football has become tumescent again. But we’ll see I guess.

Didn't watch the game live, but heard a bit on BBC World, saw the extended highlights this morning. If anyone is to blame it's the friggin midfield, they got dominated by at best a low mid tier combination. Matic was a really good player, now is well past his bestand is one of the first that needs replacing , Young is exactly what we have seen for the past 2 seasons, a handy back up that's all.

To be honest, Pogba is such an enigma, brilliant for a game or two them a complete tosspot for a while. Someone get in his head, that the EPL is not a backyard where you can show off some fancy dan moves.

If Ole has the intuition to get the balance of the team right, then he should prioritise a rb, an aerial dominant CB, 2 midfielders and right winger. Hard to get them all in one window, but let's not forget that Teflon ed said " I can do things others only dream of" . Let's hope that statement was not about servicing the Glazers, did see Citeh play the first half last night and that makes us look slow and well behind .

Over to you Ed, no more Rugby World Cups, Tennis or underwater marbles - actually do what's needed to take the club forward, that's your real job!!
