Obtainable Attackers

This is Lucas Lima from santos in brazil. 25 years old, Will leave santos this season. Incredibly quick, two footed, can cross, pass and has a hammer of a left foot. He is the attacker we need. He will come cheaper and will not be cup tied. Real madrid and juve have been linked with him. He says he is ready to leave santos (has had offers but declined). I think he will be available for around 20 million euros. Club president has said they have an offer of 20 million euros on the table from europe for him. I suspect its from madrid as Perez has met his agent wagner(Same agent as gabigol) recently. He has also broen into brazil squad and scored against argentina.

I have never seen him play so can't say anything about him really but from what you are saying it sounds like he has all the qualities Van Gaal is looking for in his wide players.
Not many players are available in the January window at least not of the quality we are looking for so this guy could be a realistic target for us.

Not played 75% of all internationals for two years so no work permit that way
Unless he has an eu passport (I don't think he does?) it's a non starter as at 25 he won't qualify under the special talent thing

Anyone suggested needs pace and the ability to beat a man, that is imperative in LvG's system unless you are a unique talent like Muller.

I would worry that Reus is too soft and fragile for the PL, Griezmann is the obvious choice for one. After that you are either talking about lower level punts like Mahrez and Mane or younger Martial-esque potential like Sane, Dybala and Barkley. I like Nolito but I'm not sure this league would suit him at his stage of his career.

Those are the ones for the positions around the #9, if LvG decides to use Martial from the left more then Lukaku and Morata might be our best shots for a #9.
Aubameyang?

Or we could find players who will grow into the likes Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar, etc.

Costa, before moving to Bayern, wasn't raved about as much as he is now, yet, he's arguably been Bayern's best player this season. Certainly a player we could have done with now. The talent is out there. We just need to look, instead of making silly bids for the players you mentioned that are not obtainable, i.e. Muller and Neymar.

Players like Texiera, Mane, Mahrez, Felipe Anderson, Brahimi, Barkley, Fekir could all be the game changers we could do with in our team.

Exactly.

Mahrez could very well become that class of player. He's absurdly gifted and quite young still.

I like Sadio Mané personally. I think the problem is also midfield though. Transition is way to slow, and I don't think fast forwards necessarily equate to fast football. Moving the ball from back to front is key, and for that we need speed of mind and great technique throughout the team. This is part of the reason we have struggled so much since Shaw got injured. Him, and even Valencia as a full back pairing would make us so much better going forward.

I want someone who wants to be a Red Devil. I would have fought you about Di Maria's quality, but that turned out a semi nightmare.

That was just Van Gaal being an idiot. He could have stuck Di Maria out on the right, accept that he'd have good and bad games playing there but the good would outweight the bad and we'd have a very productive winger. Doing well for PSG often in a similar position.

Hindsight being 20/20,

Memphis---Martial-----DiMaria
-----Herrera----Schweinsteiger-
----------Schneiderlin-------
Shaw-Alderweild-Smalling-Darmian
------------De Gea--------------------

should have been this year's realistic first choice. Obviously we could have signed Douglas Costa and whoever else would have been a steal, but the previous lineup would have just meant doing what we did along with signing a very available CB who had done very well in the Prem and keeping our most talented attacking player.

Tem's not perfect and there are certainly questions (can Schweinsteiger still play that role, is Martial a consistent scorer at this age, how does Alderweild gel, whatever is wrong with Darmian and Memphis) but basically we did a lot right but sadly had to sell a class player at a position of need.

Part of the reason he is doing well though is probably happy and that he and his family does not hate Paris... his family and him were not happy living in Manchester and I don't think playing him in a different position was going to change that element

Is he that good? His stats don't look very impressive and the defending in that video (the gaps in midfield are unreal) looks atrocious.

Even Ronaldo would struggle in that system based on individual flashes, and won't be covered or helped enough.

I would say that the best would be having Bale or Ronaldo on one wing, Martial upfront, and wishing that Memphis getting better on the other wing.

Anyway in that system every striker would struggle, but if we're talking about getting one in January that would lift us, we can't forget Vardy.

Energic, fast and direct. He seems to prefers running that having the ball, a bit like Ivica Olic managed by Van Gaal.

I would rather have him than Lukaku... why ? Because if we manage to be saved this summer with Giggs our manager, Guardiola or Ancelotti, Lukaku is a type of player they don't want. They rather have a dynamic player like Martial or Vardy.

So Vardy one to lure (Mind that I don't like him because we talk about Man United wanted to be saved by mister nobody)

Anyway I would rather buy a complement striker, a third one I would say because I just hope that we will lure a big fish this summer and we still have Martial who can develop in a very good player if our style of play is better.

Costa has been great, but Muller and Lewandovski have been Bayern's best players this season (both have already 20 goals from 21 matches).

It is a valid example though, and we should definitely look to those kind of players. Saying that, I am not sure that we have a lot of time to wait for players to develop (although Costa started already on fire), so I would definitely prefer an Aubameyang/Griezmann type of signing.
Waiting for players to develop is still a lot better than waiting for a pipe dream signing that will only become possible if they are cast offs or are seriously on the wane like Schweinsteiger. If we had Costa and he'd managed to assist an extra ten goals whilst scoring a few of his we'd be top of the league and in the last 16 of the CL : which is much better than spaming Bayern's mailbox with ambitious bids for a player they will never sell. We do need A-list talents like Muller and Lewandovski, that is a given, but in the absence of possibilities we should look at players in the lower tier on the verge of breaking into the top tier or at least capable of giving us 7/10 performances on a regular basis like Valencia used to do for us earlier in his career, a player like that could help elevate the output from Memphis, Martial and Rooney just by being able to bring the ball into dangerous positions. Currently we aren't creating enough to even make an accurate assessment of the goal scoring abilities of our forwards.

Rather have Vardy than Lukaku? No way will Giggs, Guardiola or Ancelotti prefer Vardy over Lukaku. That's insanity. Vardy is not going to replicate this form next season, I am 100% sure of that.

at this stage..

For what it's worth Batshuayi could be another striker who could improve us.
Yup, starting for Belgium ahead of Benteke, Lukaku at the moment. Great talent and certainly obtainable I would imagine. The Belgians love playing in the premier league.

Get Mahrez in January, and then replace one of Young or Valencia with a real top quality forward in the summer.

Mahrez or Mané? Providing they are both obtainable.

I prefer Mahrez. I feel long term his game is going to be more transferable to a higher level with his tight dribbling and ball control. Both very good players though.

Mane. He's more productive and has been good for a while, Mahrez I'm also impressed with but Feghouli is a similar standard of player and we can get him for free (also Algierian).

I fully think Memphis will play a lot better in a team that plays quicker attacking football. I also reckon he'd thrive off there being a good winger on the other side and be influenced positively by it.

Would you have classed Di Maria as obtainable when he won the man of the match in a champions league final?

No, but he only became obtainable because Perez decided he wanted James Rodriguez. If he hadn't signed him we probably wouldn't of signed di Maria.

So he wasn't really unobtainable nor is it impossible that we cannot attract anyone from the clubs mentioned in the op given the business in recent times we have done with them.

Obtainable players? what happened to the theory that 'we are Manchester United and are filthy rich' we can sign anyone.

Inexplicable Madrid outcasts are sort of an exception to normal rules, to be fair. You can never be sure when they'll decide to replace a superb key player with some hyped man of the moment from elsewhere, so it's hardly a reliable measure of who can or can't be bought.

Obviously there are not a lot of player avalaible this January. Quality player to fix a long term issue, not a panic buy like Mata two years ago, are not on the market in January.

Usually it's whether betting on a potential (Saha, Evra, Vidic), or splashing the cash for a big player unsettled in another club (Mata...)

We can also think about the Champions League as a better exposition (even if we are out after the Wolfsburg game), and use that to attract player from Europa League who wants to shine in the top European football before the Euro with their national team this summer
  • Not a fan of him, but Vardy can be obtainable and an upgrade of Rooney unfortunately
  • Felipe Anderson, I followed him last year but he's struggling this year
  • Mario Gomez, more a Van Gaal choice and obtainable, but this would be very bad for us
  • Try Marco Reus or even Javier Pastore ? I'm a bit dreamer with him but he's struggling this year with Blanc. He would be quite perfect for us behind Martial, in the same style as Ozil, then we'll have one of the best 10 in the world

I think United can buy up every top centre forward in the World and it will make ZERO difference. There are no chances being created due to the philosophy of passing it sideways for 90 minutes.

Isn't Pastore very inconsistent though?

I tell you now, ive been watching Lorenzo Insigne at Napoli since him and thiago stole the show at the u21 euro's. He's a top player, and ready for the step up i reckon. Exactly what we need on the left, and can play more central as well. No idea what he would cost, but he would arguably be one of the more attainable options listed in this thread. He would be what we expected mata to be in terms of creativeness. Our own little pacey David silva/isco.

He's got 8 goals 4 assists I believe in 14 league games as Napoli top Serie A.

I know plenty will scoff because he plays for lowly Watford, but has anyone seen enough of Ighalo? He looked brilliant yesterday. Pace, strength, effort and decent finishing.
