Nuri Sahin

To be honest, I thought he was a cracking player. (Probably still is in the right set-up) but I was referring more to the fact that half the posters down there wanted him and were actually quite upset with Fergie for not even going for him.

Fergie didnt go for him because he could only get him on Loan in my opinion. No point in developing a player for Madrid in that type situation.

I'd still like to see him given a few games playing in a deeper midfield role. But it seems Rodgers just isn't convinced by him.

I'm sure Kagawa would give him a glowing reference. I hope Valencia knock on Madrid's door if he does go back there. Gago is wanted by Boca and Valencia are even interested in Raul Albiol, so why not sign a decent player while you're already talking to Madrid over Albiol?

That maybe tells more about your manager than it does Nuri Sahin.

Besides, it seems that your manager has to work with someone beforehand in order for him to be "convinced", alá Allen, Borini and Sturridge, all of whom he has splurged big money on and, coincidentally, nobody else seems to be "convinced" by them.

I can see why he might not be convinced - defensively Sahin hasn't seemed up to scratch. Whilst he's decent on the ball he looks very much laboured otherwise. However, the fact he was a player at Dortmund makes me think there is still something there. But I suppose the manager has to be trusted in this kind of situation - he sees him train day in, day out.

Rodgers had left Chelsea before Sturridge joined by the way.

I was one of the ones that wanted him here, and for good reason too. He was great at Dortmund, but didnt really get a look in at Madrid, which is understandable due to Alonso and Khedira being there. I thought he'd be a great signing for Liverpool, but tbf to him, he has been playing in a more advanced role which doesn't suit him at all. He's best as a deep player with a great range of passing, like Alonso or the Scholes of now. Still wouldn't mind taking a punt on him if we can get him dirt cheap in Summer, though that is very unlikely.

I don't think he ever wanted to go to Liverpool. Can you blame him?

I thought there were rumours that he turned them down twice and wanted to go to Arsenal.

I read similar things. But Moanrinho's animosity towards Wenger, and his good relationship with Rogers stood in the way. That and the fact Liverpool were willing to pay big money.

Wenger has been a known admirer of Sahin since he was 16 or so, having been quoted as saying Sahin is the best young midfielder in Europe back then... Shame...

I still think if he plays in the right team in the right position and gets game time, he can still revive his form and be a top midfielder.

Surprised by how useless he has been for Liverpool. Just looks like he gives no fecks.

Liverpool offered to pay 5m up front for a 1 year loan deal - no wonder they kept turning arsenal down.

It's a shame really as he would of fit in much better there.

Would anyone take him here? He only cost Madrid 9m and with the way things have gone for him I can't imagine he would cost any more than 5m or so. I wouldn't mind us taking a gamble on him and at the very least he could become a good squad player

So, apparently he's on his way back to Dortmund. Didn't work out for him at Liverpool, wrong club for him.

Am I right in saying Liverpool paid a large loan fee to get him? Is it clear whether they paid it up front or is it in instalments?

Tough one considering the year before he didn't get much game time, then has to adapt and go to an underachieving Liverpool who just got a new coach and is changing Liverpool to a style of change...

Would be harsh to consider him a flop, but he didn't do well in Liverpool, probably being played too high and the lack of game time before that played major issues in how he poorly adapted to the PL from my point of view.

The fee was 5 million, and there is a wage contribution that I believe is 50 000 pounds a week.

Hasn't played a competitive football game in more than a month, and hasn't played a league game in 2 months.

To be fair, he's being played out of position and hasn't featured due to injury. That said, he hasn't justified the fee and wages Liverpool have paid to acquire him. If the Dortmund rumours are true, I hope he can turn his career around. Great on his day.

Surely, they'll get some money back ? Why would they let him go otherwise, having paid a fee?

Do they need him ?

Yes, I think they can use him very well. He needs to get back to his best though but I'm sure Klopp will manage that. They need some depth and they played a 3 man midfeld a few times this season against strong teams like Bayern and Real. So having another great CM would help, I guess.

That's how they lined up against Bayern this season.

Can see him starting ahead of Kuba (=Blaszczykowski) in that formation, for example. Or just play him alongside Gündogan with Götze behind the striker and Kuba on the right, if you need to break down defensive minded teams. Might help them in the league, Dortmund were struggling against a few teams parking the bus.

They were not struggling so much in getting goals but were conceiving too many - so that might not be the smartest move either.

But you need depth if you play in two competitions - especially if people of your first set are injured.

I remember Guillem Ballbag saying that Liverpool offered a 5m loan fee with no option to buy.

I hope its true. They've pissed away so much money.

People focus so much on saf's correct decisions to buy, but they often neglect his correct decisions NOT to buy. This is probably one more illustration of the latter.

We wouldn't be saying that if he delivered in the same way he did at Dortmund though, then we would have missed out on one of the best midfielders in the league. Luck of the draw if you ask me. No one could foresee this kind of fall from grace.

fact of the matter is that he didn't reproduce that form in the premier league, so it looks like the decision not to buy him was correct. there could be some luck involved, but saf and the united scouting crew gets these things right more often than wrong.

I think it is safe to say on track record alone that if Liverpool has signed a player that SAF has passed on then it was duly noted. Seems their scouting and additions team is absolutely dire.

While United's is probably one of the better in the prem.

Dortmund announced a spontaneous press conference at 18.00 CET (17.00 British Time) a couple of minutes ago. German Media (not just Bild) claims that they'll announce the return of Sahin.
