Nuri Sahin

I doubt there's a loan fee involved. Madrid were just looking for someone who would pick up the whole (or as near as possible all) of his wages and not insist on a buyout clause - I don't think there were many teams willing to do that.

From what I'm hearing there is definitely a loan fee involved and simply their offer is better than ours.

Still rumours the Liverpool deal isn't done yet & we could make another move but I think with the way this has dragged on I think it is unlikely he will join us. Too many conflicting reports about this transfer out at the moment! The times now saying Liverpool are loaning him and not wanting a buy out clause in his contract which suits R.Madrid but would be pointless for us.

Compare their strikers to Arsenal who have Giroud, Chamakh, Podolski and Walcott. All of them are either unproven in England, inconsistent and are either shit.

Agger plus Skrtel is better than what Arsenal have. Sagna is better than Johnson but than Enrique is better than Gibbs/Santos.

Suarez is only person to make any claim of being better in terms of strikers.
Borini = unproven in England.
Caroll = inconsistent and generally shit.

I don't agree with second para as well, but lets just see what happens this season in that regards.

Podoslki and Giroud= Unproven in England
Walcott= Inconsistent and generally average.

Thus proving that Liverpool's strikeforce is better than Arsenal. Kosclieny is a good defender but Vermaelen is over-rated IMO. But yeah as you say we'll see what happens in that regard.

Anyway from Liverpool Echo
However, Arsenal failed to reach an agreement with Madrid.

The Gunners wanted the option to make the transfer permanent next summer but refused to agree to Madrid’s £14million asking price.

Liverpool immediately revived their interest and now the loan transfer is on the brink of being completed. There won’t be an option to buy him.

Surely the way people talk about him in this thread, 14m would be a fair price for him?

Sahin, Sahin, Sahin, Sah-heeeeen. I'm begging of you, please don't ruin our plan...
Sahin, Sahin, Sahin, Sah-heeeeen. Please don't leave us just because you can...

Your passing is beyond compare
With dazzling skill and silky flair
With sweet technique and a first touch that's sanguine.

Your cross is like a breath of spring
Your chip is soft like summer rain
And we should not compete for you, Sahin

Though we dream about you in our sleep
There's nothing we can do to keep
You from leaving when the season's done, Sahin.

And I can easily understand
How you could easily leave us, man
But you don't know what you mean to us, Sahin

Sahin, Sahin, Sahin, Sah-heeeeen. I'm begging of you, please don't ruin our plan...

I think it is considering they want £5mill for the loan fee as well. Liverpool are a bit thick when it comes to transfers and maybe they can justify spending close to £10mill on a player without an option to buy but we certainly can't. You can see how many millions that club has wasted in recent years.

@KM: you honestly think that Vermalen is overrated? He is a terrific defender, but is too injury prone. Imo, he's a notch above Agger in all respects of his game (maybe Agger has an even better shot). Skrtel is a poor man's Vidic, but still decent. Koscielny is good, so if he and Vermalen could get some games together, they could be really good.

And the strikers of Liverpool are horrendous - just look at their scoring records.

Agree. Not really related to the thread, but what do you think of Gerrard in relation to Rodgers' preferred philosophy? For me, he looked the most out of place player on the opening day.

The whole midfield looked disjointed. Allen played well but was too deep and what he did overlapped too much with what Lucas should have been doing. Lucas looked like he hadn't kicked a ball in 8 months or something.

What stood out most about Gerrard was how many mistakes he made. What you can usually rely on from him is that even on days where he doesn't really stand out, his basic game is always nailed down. Won't lose the ball cheaply, won't duff simple passes and such. Hopefully, it was just a bad day at the office for him because I can't remember the last time his bottom level was that low. As such, I am not ready to say much about how he fits in.

I thought the positions he took up looked promising and in particular Allen's ability to find him in a good position with a direct pass through the centre. We haven't really had that dynamic since Xabi left.

All I've seen so far about this is an Arsenal fan tweeter claiming this and arsenal fans re-tweeting it as fact immediately after.

How?
That just states that the judgement can't be done.

@B19 (quote function not working), I'm surprised at your opinion regarding Gerrard. He's never struck me as someone at ease with possession football. Not to downplay him as a player because he has been a terrific one for Liverpool, but he's always seemed more suited to a more a direct style because he's an impact player whose strengths are his shooting, driving runs, crossing etc rather than close control in tight spaces, short passes etc.

I don't think it's necessarily an issue.

He obviously has the ability to play possession football as his first touch is generally excellent and his passing among the best in the league. It's more a case of mentality and instinct. He is not a patient player and Rodgers looks to favour a patient approach.

I do agree that you lose out on some of his assets as he can't make as much use of his drive and power crowded spaces.

But from what I saw, he wasn't being asked to play a patient game. It looked to me like the instructions for containment and possession changed once the ball went into a certain zone in the final third with more focus on direct passing once there. And Gerrard was largely occupying that zone. There were several instances where Allen would find Gerrard with a 15-20 yard pitch through the centre and players around him would start breaking forward with urgency before he'd even turned with the ball, so they were obviously expecting direct play once the ball came there.

The key for Gerrard I feel will be the midfielders behind him. If they can find him in space between the lines regularly, it could work wonders. If he is reduced to playing safe passes between midfield and attack because he only ever gets the ball when it's been telegraphed well in advance, I don't foresee happy days. He is no Suarez who will simply turn and nutmeg two defenders marking him closely, no matter how tight the space.

Think he'll have more joy on the right wing if that happens.

In conclusion, I agree he is an impact player and needs to play like one, but I don't think that is necessarily a problem. It looks to me like that is what Rodgers wants from him.

Our need for someone who can stick it in the net is so great I even think Sturridge would be the right kind of signing for us.

Maybe if the loan fee is £5m plus £14m fee then I would agree £19m is too much as he has questions over his fitness.

Good signing for the scousers if it goes through. I'm surprised, considering it's a one year loan deal initially, that he has agreed to play for a club not in the Champions League.

Bit of a climb down for him, not even just from Madrid, but he'd have been as well staying in Dortmund than ending up at Liverpool.

Not arsed one way or another about Sahin. If Rodgers fails to get us a decent striker in the next few days, then I can see another season of hard luck stories.

Where would Sahin fit in anyway? Lucas and Allen are the holding players. Would it be for extra depth or Gerrard on the wing with Allen pushed up?

It would make for the kind of luxury situation we haven't had in a long time where we have 4 central midfielders who really should all be starting.

But that presupposes a reality where all four are not injured and in good form, and the rest/rotation isn't making the ends meet in terms of how many games they should be getting. Which is the kind of presupposition that always comes undone over the course of the season.

If it does happen, I think we'll see Gerrard on the right wing more frequently.

Spot on!

I'm also not sure he fits Rodgers style of play. However, he is bigger than the manager and it's very likely similar events will follow to those at Chelsea with AVB.

Different situation: Sahin will be an incoming new boy, whilst the likes of Terry, Lampard and Drogba were established old hands.

He thinks Gerrard is going to throw a strop and upset the dressing room like lamps, cole, terry et al.

How come there was no interest in Dzeko/Adebayor? Wages?

Dzeko especially would be perfect. I really rate him.

Adebayor is a cnut who was always going to sign for spurs. Dzeko, I imagine would be costly and on much too high wages.

Rumours have us linked with Huntelaar now. I'd have him over Sturridge any day of the week.

I've just seen this on the FanCast facebook page.

What an incredibly bonkers picture with an incredibly bonkers (but admirably Liverpoolesque) view of history!? I assume the person who made it is 6.

And then they accuse Man Utd fans of thinking football only started in 1992.....

He is going over for a season with no option to make it permanent.
Unless he is a fan of Liverpool or hates Arsenal, a London club in the CL would easily be the preferred destination over a club in the Europa league that finished 8th and is going to struggle to break into the top 4

Even if the maker is assuming that football started in 2006, he'd still only be crowing over two domestic cups and a consistently lower league position.

Mockney, I think you of all people should know better than that. Trying to make sense of Liverpool fans is something you will not achieve in your lifetime.

The maker probably assumes that football ended in 1990.

In which case Arsenal would still have plenty in there. Including 9 leagues & 5 FA Cups.

Obviously it's just a silly joke post. But it doesn't make sense in any possible permutation it could.

If it's pointing to Liverpool's glorious haul, then it makes no sense to have nothing in Arsenal's

If it's pointing to Arsenal's recent drought, then it makes no sense to have Liverpool's glorious haul.

If it's pointing to Arsenal's drought AND Liverpool glorious haul, then it makes no sense since Arsenal have won 4 leagues during Liverpool's own famous drought.

IT MAKES NO SENSE DAMMIT!!

Well I meant in general but yes at this moment in time I don't believe we are good enough to beat them in the CL unfortunately.

Porto. Liverpool. Chelsea.

;)

Easily good enough to beat Madrid on our day.

The Liverpool cabinet only has European Cups in it so he probaby assumes there's no football outside Champions League/European Cup. Which, again, is quite fecking stupid because Liverpool aren't even in it for the third season in a row and Arsenal are always there these days.

Never seen him play but I heard only good things about this guy. I hope he will be another Aquilani though.
