Northern Ireland Thread

That's a small minority there and Catholics do indeed go to matches.
Both of which I can confirm as my family live beside the stadium and go often.
Anybody singing such songs are scorned at at the majority which soon shuts them up so that doesn't actually answer his question.

He had various questions. One of which was Is religion still an issue regarding NT? I think the video speaks for itself on that question.

As you well know, there are idiots like that on both sides
If only we could get rid of those minorities, we could be a much better country for it.
Oh, and get rid of the DUP while we're at it.

It's not a small minority we do live here you know and that goes on a lot .

Yes some catholic play and some go to the games where they hear songs like this .

So surely any catholic who doesn't want to play or support Northern Ireland can be excused .

Whats that to do with anything? Is it somehow ok because of where it took place?

Apparently it doesn't matter what fans do outside the ground .

Look obviously there are a lot of decent fans of Northern Ireland but there are still a lot of ignorant idiots too.

Sadly that is going to keep being the case for a long long time

It is a small minority so you're wrong on that. I went to the euro's in France and the odd idiot got shouted out for such behaviour.

It's far from ok but I think the original question was to determine whether religion is still an issue with the national team and you have a very particular reply to insinuate it's quite bad which again is completely wrong.

What would you have posted to him if that video hadn't surfaced in last few days.

That I used to live off the Lisburn Road quite close to Windsor and heard directly some of the things that were sung.

That I have never been to Windsor for those very reasons. Nor do I know anyone that has.

The IFA may have made moves in recent years to wipe this out, but there is still a long way to go.

So in direct response to his questions:

Is religion still an issue regarding NT? Yes
Are Catholic players playing for NT? Yes
Are Catholics supporting NI or Ireland? Overwhelmingly Ireland.

Me again:boring:. Sorry for being curious about this subject.
If you are NI Catholic( not you, i am talking in general), will you choose to support(or play) Ireland or NI?
I am devoted Catholic and stuff but i just can't believe that there are still countries in Europe in which religion is issue and divides people.

edit: sorry, you just answered.

I support both and always have.
And I loathe anti Catholic songs which I've rarely heard in following the NI team of which I've been to over 100 matches.

Total bunch of sectarian pricks. Really makes me mad watching that because a lot of people will look at it and think that's what many NI fans are like and it's infuriating. I've been supporting NI for 35 years+ and I've been at matches when the sectarianism was completely open and aggressive (I was at the infamous NI vs ROI match back in the early 90's) which was really scary to nowadays when thankfully the vast majority of fans want nothing to do with that sort of crap and generally it is a varied and welcoming atmosphere at the ground (at least that has been my experience).

Morons like this really piss me off.

Pisses me off too as we know that certainly isn't the case.
We could easily lose those supporters and still be as loud.

It's kinda sad that you feel like that - i'd hope that if you ever did go to Windsor for a NI match you would be pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere. I don't think religion is an issue any longer at all for the NT - like many have said we have a Catholic manager and many Catholic players with no issue at all - they all get cheered on the same.

I've been going to matches for over 10 years and in my experience the vast majority of fans are not interested in sectarianism. There's no difference in how catholic and protestant players are supported at Windsor Park these days. The last time it was an issue was Neil Lennon.

There will always be some prehistoric cnuts who try their best to bring us back to the dark ages but they are a very small percentage. The people in that video are scum but we could pull up a video or two of United fans mocking the Hillsborough disaster and it wouldn't be a fair representation of the fanbase as a whole.

I've been to loads of NI games and the sectarianism is still obvious. Worked with the IFA on the religious component, amongst other things, too. They're under no illusion the problem is solved

Plenty of no true Scotsman bullshit going on here. I've been to a Northern Ireland game, and while the only thing I heard in the ground was a carefully worded song about James McClean (derogatory but not explicitly sectarian), there was plenty of anti-Catholic shite sang on the walk to and from the stadium.

The IFA have sanitised the stadium, but nothing has changed amongst the supporters. Don't pretend the twats in that video are outliers.

Don't think we'll ever wipe out sectarianism in NI, but thankfully i've never heard the likes of the above at a NI game. I attend games with my partner who is a catholic and she'd never be back if she heard anything she didn't like. I know a few in that video, work with one in fact who's getting a bit of stick today. A couple of the girls in the video are going out with catholics so a bit embarassing for them. That bar is a shithole, pretty typical of what goes on in Sandy Row tbh

Usually stuff like this bothers me as a catholic but in this instance it doesn't really. From what I gather it's a few culchies in the big city for the day. Too much drink taken, they knew where they were and sang the shite they sang as they knew'd they'd get away with it. They've been named and shamed on fbook, one of them works in a family business supplying farms, that's been named and shamed as well. They might have a wee bit of grovelling to do to its customer base. Their local football club has distanced themselves and publicly made a statement to that effect. Sad really more than anything, and you know what will happen now, every week something will be showing up on social media from some shit hole bar in the north of some stupid pissed up cnut singing sectarian crap.

Seen a few videos of Rangers fans singing the "Tiffany" song over the last few years, I think they will take the "credit" for this little creation by tiny minds.

Agree with this.
Those local papers and social media love to stir it as well.
Too many good people on both sides to ever let them win though.

Absolutely bang on! Seems the common theme in this country. If it's not one side one week, it's the other side the next week.

Sad reality is that a couple of people were clearly pissed up and acting the wanker in front of a camera, in a random pub with a few wearing NI shirts. See a few comments based on the National Stadium, surprising given at the Germany game, some drugged up scrote got up and shouted something sectarian and a group of fans in his row literally ejected him from the stadium. I am certain he was close to getting emptied! I am certain if that made the press, he would have been made to represent us all.

The outcome? Fans as a whole get the bad rep and the other side use it as a smug stick to beat them with. Rinse and repeat. Happens to both sides before anyone jumps down my throat here.

The bottom line is any tosser can buy a football top, but you they don't come with instructions how to behave in them.

They need to get themselves a catholic partner. Then they can say/sing all this stuff and just claim it’s banter like I do.

I know for a fact a couple of girls in the video are dating catholics, and it would be banter for them. The 3-4 I know in the vid 100% don't hate catholics, they've just been caught up in the moment, the same way i sing about hanging dalglish from a tree when i'm out in a crowd and other absolute nonsense

Im not far from the area they all live in. Heard rumours one has had a tractor burnt out and one has been fired.

The amount of oh ah up the ra etc videos i seen on paddys day, snapchat right enough, whats the difference here? Is it because its linked to the national team?

Think its slightly blown out of proportion.

Just for a bit of balance, all sides are at it. This probably won't get the same coverage as the other video but it's just as bad.

If there's sectarian chanting every week then it's a good thing the people doing it are forced to deal with the real after-effects of it every week. Maybe eventually we'll move past that form of banter.

From Twitter... fairly certain Ronan's brother posts(ed) here

Today we remember our friend and @PoliceServiceNI colleague Constable Ronan Kerr murdered this day 8 years ago. Those who direct, support or carry out such acts have no place in civilised society. #LestWeForget @ChiefConPSNI @NIPolicingBoard https://t.co/S5vycoEQXP
