Gaming No Man's Sky | 25th May New FREE Update: Leviathan

Glad I'm not a member of the PC Master Race, as they'll be waiting until the 12th due to a delay.

In other news:

I wonder just how much that patch is going to do. That statements sounds pretty strong, and makes me think it's not just fine-tuning and debugging.

Hmm its going to be a massive fail isn't it. Review embargo up until launch day instantly sets the alarms ringing and they are very touchy on social media, they seem to be making excuses already before the game is even out.

That's very little to go off. Reviewers get to start on Monday, a day before. And touchy on social media? They're a tiny-ass studio who've poured their blood and sweat into this over 3 years, and who are being held to AAA expectations and hype despite being so small.

Anyway, people have been playing this for a while now, it's definitely going to deliver as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, unless there's some fatal bug that destroys all enjoyment (and given the streams have been going for about a week, that seems unlikely), or the starting points get messed up so I start in the midst of hundreds of Gamergate bellends, it looks pretty certain it'll meet my expectations and I'll enjoy it plenty. Ship looks like an X-Wing ffs, I'll probably gladly spend 20 hours looking for a swamp planet.

lol

Ships have all sorts of sizes... I've been surprised about the diversity there, tbh.

Anyway, I've had a really hard time restraining myself and have watched other people play for hours most days now, and I still feel utterly jazzed up about what might be over that next hill, and damning the players for not taking a look at certain areas, or approaching certain animals in the distance. If they've got a significant update coming, and they have themselves said that it's significant, then I'm sure there are a lot of surprises to be had still. Quote, one of their tweets: "5am at Hello Games. Wrapping up a month of work on our first update. Lots of new features, balancing and content".

Even if there's not, I know I'd get my money's worth. I've been "ooh"ing and "aah"ing regularly when watching streams. To those of us who are just enamoured with the idea of exploring an uncountable number of planets and systems this game has delivered and will continue to do so. Some might miss the tailored levels and specific goals, but put yourself in the shoes of an explorer, wanting to see what's beyond, and appreciate the fact that maths has generated this kind of diversity, and you have to be a bit impressed, surely? And at any rate, stunning though games like, say, Uncharted, are, one could also piss and moan about being funneled around in what looks massive and open, but is ultimately quite limited. Horses for courses.

Lastly, as a space nerd, I quite like the desolate feel of the game.

Update 1.03

When we went gold five or six week ago, we posted on twitter, and literally every reply was like “hope you are going on a nice holiday!”. Some of us have, but I didn’t want to, not yet. I pictured myself somewhere staring out the window thinking about this game I’ve been working on for five years.

We’re under a pretty intense spotlight right now, and hopefully it’s easy to imagine how hard it would be to switch off from that, or how deeply we care about people’s first impression of the game.

In fact most of us were back here the day after we went gold, working on this update. We’re already proud of what we put on a disk, but if we had time, why not continue to update it?

Hello Games will continually update No Man’s Sky this way. This is the first of many.

It will be available on Monday for press for review once it exits submission, and on launch for public on PC and PS4. We expect future updates like these to continue to be free.

For 99.9% of people, all you have to do is install the update before you begin to play.

If you had an early copy somehow, your save game will technically work post update, but you will miss out on new content and experiences if you don’t delete your save before updating (should be obvious why from notes below). We highly recommend deleting your save if you have played before updating your game (we won’t do this in future, but it’s a day zero update).

Servers will be wiped on Sunday and again Monday in the lead up to launch.

Beware these notes contain some spoilers. Here are some things our little team has been up to over the last four or five weeks:

  • The Three Paths – there are now new, unique “paths” you can follow throughout the game. You must start the game on a fresh save, with the patch, as early choices have significant impact on what you see later in the game, and the overall experience.
  • The Universe – we changed the rules of the universe generation algorithm. Planets have moved. Environments have changed biomes. Galaxies have altered shape. All to create greater variety earlier. Galaxies are now up to 10x larger.
  • Diversity – Creatures are now more diverse in terms of ecology and densities on planets.
  • Planets – we’ve added dead moons, low atmosphere and extreme hazardous planets. Extreme hazards include blizzards and dust storms.
  • Atmosphere – space, night time and day skies are now 4x more varied due to new atmospheric system, which refracts light more accurately to allow for more intense sunsets.
  • Planet rotation – play testing has made it obvious people are struggling to adjust to this during play so it’s effects have been reduced further…
  • Terrain generation – caves up to 128m tall are now possible. Geometric anomalies have been added. Underwater erosion now leads to more interesting sea beds.
  • Ship diversity – a wider variety of ships appear per star system, and are available to purchase. Cargo and installed technology now vary more, and ships have more unique attributes.
  • Inventory – ship inventories now store 5 times more resources per slot. Suit inventories now store 2.5 times more per slot. This encourages exploration and gives freedom from the beginning. We’re probably going to increase this even further in the next update, for people in the latter game phases, and will allow greater trading potential.
  • Trading – trading is deeper. Star systems and planets each have their own wants and needs, based off a galactic economy. Observing these is the key to successful trading. We still working on adjusting this based on how everyone plays, but all trading values have been rebalanced across the galaxy, giving a greater depth. A bunch of trade exploits were uncovered and have been removed
  • Feeding – creatures now have their own diet, based on planet and climate. Feeding them correctly will yield different results per species, such as mining for you, protecting the player, becoming pets, alerting you to rare loot or pooping valuable resources.
  • Survival – recharging hazard protection requires rare resources, making shielding shards useful again. Storms can be deadly. Hazard protection and suit upgrades have been added. Liquids are often more dangerous
  • Graphical effects – Lighting and texture resolution have been improved. Shadow quality has doubled. Temporal AA didn’t make it in time, but it’s so close
  • Balancing – several hundred upgrades have had stat changes (mainly exo-suit and ship, but also weapon), new upgrades have been added.
  • Combat – Auto Aim and weapon aim has been completely rewritten to feel more gentle in general, but stickier when you need it. Sentinels now alert each other, if they haven’t been dealt with quickly. Quad and Walker AI is now much more challenging, even I struggle with them without a powered up weapon.
  • Space Combat – advanced techniques have been introduced, like brake drifting and critical hits. Bounty missions and larger battles now occur. Pirate frequency has been increased, as well as difficulty depending on your cargo.
  • Exploits – infinite warp cell exploit and rare goods trading exploit among other removed. People using these cheats were ruining the game for themselves, but people are weird and can’t stop themselves ¯\_(シ)_/¯
  • Stability – foundations for buildings on super large planets. Resolved several low repro crashes, in particular when player warped further than 256 light years in one session (was only possible due to warp cell exploit above).
  • Space Stations – interiors are now more varied, bars, trade rooms and hydroponic labs have been added
  • Networking – Ability to scan star systems other players have discovered on the Galactic Map, increasing the chance of collision. Star systems discovered by other players appear during Galactic Map flight
  • Ship scanning – scanning for points of interest from your ship is now possible. Buildings generate earlier and show up in ship scans
  • Flying over terrain – pop-in and shadow artefacts have been reduced. Generation speed has been increased two fold (planets with large bodies of water will be targeted in next update)
  • Writing – The Atlas path has been rewritten by James Swallow (writer on Dues Ex) and me. I think it speaks to the over-arching theme of player freedom more clearly now. Early mission text has been rewritten to allow for multiple endings.

I grew up reading Carmack’s .plan files for Quake, so it’s fun to be writing one of my own :)

Next up we’re adding the ability to build bases and own giant space freighters. Temporal AA and my new cloud rendering tech should be coming soon too. It will really change the game again, and enhance it visually.

This universe we’ve built is a pretty large canvas, we’ve got a lot of ideas. This is the type of game we want to be.

Sean

Most of that sounds great, but I really don't want other players "collliding" with me.

JUST read this, came in to post. That's it, I'm going dark on watching streams, don't wanna see what the updated article looks like before I boot up myself.

Bless Murray and co for not vacationing the moment it went gold, but rather staying on to make it even better from day 1.

I'm leaning towards getting this tomorrow. There aren't that many games coming out for the next month and I'm less interested in Deus Ex as it's a story heavy game and I have too many of them in my backlog. I'm also starting my 4-week holiday on Wednesday and only leaving for Croatia on the 18th so will have plenty of spare time to explore universe.

I don't like paying full price for an indie game but it's one of the more ambitious ones so should be well worth it for their effort.

I think that just means coming across another player? I'm guessing that if a star system is discovered another player maybe there..... But considering the size of planets and these star system, you'll still unlikely come across another player.

Crap, it was supposed to be hitting stores tomorrow in Poland but shops have not got their copies yet and will release at earliest on Wednesday. I'll be working from home on Wednesday so I thought maybe I'd have this already to be able to play during breaks. BTW what I like about this game is that every single player will have a different story in it, will visit different planets, encounter different things. I've seen some of early opinions stating it gets sort of boring and repetitive but not too worried about that - I'm unlikely to be playing so much to get bored quickly, I'll probably spend 30 hours on this in 2-3 months.

I never realised this was so close to release, always dismissed it as vaporware at the back of my mind.

Suits me just fine, no expectations as I've missed the hype train.

Been dispatched  Don't suppose there's much hope of it getting here a day early though.

I hope so. Still think they should keep stuff like that opt-in. Imagine finding a planet with massively rare resources and no sentinels and having to tell everyone about it.

Having to tell?

AFAIK i think that's how it works, if you wanted to 'meet' another player you will have to communicate with them. Although i don't believe there is co-ordinates to actually give other players, so even then it's harder to arrange a meet up.

Even if you do bump into another player, you would never know. The game doesn't tell you, doesn't let you communicate in game, doesn't display usernames... Maybe they will move of fly ships differently to AI but that's as much as you'll be able to tell it's another human.

These planets are quite big too, you could be on the same planet as different player and never see them. You're pretty much alone out there.

I find that thrilling. The sheer and real universal scope to it. It's not going to be the real deal, but I don't think we've seen such an ambitious space-game before, and to me it seems like they've done wonders through their procedural engineering, and that it'll keep me wanting to wander and explore for some time. I've already spoiled it for myself with tons of stream-watching (prior to the patch), and I'm raring to take my own, completely unique game-journey. Nevermind all the updates that will come, and the tweaking. So long as they're not going to force some MMO element on it, I'm all dandy :)

I'm intrigued by this game but not sure if it's something I'll enjoy. I've watched a few videos and it looks like you fly around space, land on planets to shoot rocks with a laser gun and get minerals. Yeah you can shoot robots, animals and modify your gun/ship but is there more to the game? The exploration sounds nice but I don't think that's enough to pull me in. If you're buying this game what are you excited about? I feel im 50/50 if i should get it.

It's pretty much just exploration and getting resources. I used to spend hours driving around Liberty City in GTA not doing much else so it'll probably be fine. I don't expect this to be absolutely amazing but it's something fresh and should be enjoyable. As I've said, the best thing about it is the size and the fact that no two players will have the same story or memories about the game, could be kind of cool telling everyone how you were attacked by a T-Rex that nobody else has even seen.

Yep you will feel alone and you are supposed to feel alone in space. You will come across enemies but also friendly species. I think they've gone a bit too far with the guns just because 15-year olds would not touch it if it did not have the shooting element though.

I'd probably skip it for 2-3 months if it was coming out around November when lots of games are getting released, right now I can feel the hype as it's the first big release since Overwatch, I'm almost done with Blood & Wine and I will probably skip Deus Ex until next year. Also, the game is getting more attractive the more I see of it and the more I read on it. Sounds like a truly chilling and interesting experience, and most importantly a very curious and adventurous project which I think should be applauded even if the final product might not be perfect.

Hell is other people (playing No Man's Sky).

http://www.no-mans-sky.com/2016/08/what-do-you-do-in-no-mans-sky/

Here is what No Man’s Sky definitely is:
  • Exploring a universe of pretty procedurally generated worlds, with beautiful creatures
  • Trading with NPCs
  • Combat against robots/mechs and cool space battles
  • Survival/crafting in a universe sized sandbox
  • An awesome procedural soundtrack from my genuine favourite band (check the NMS album out here)
  • For one small moment, you might feel like you’ve stepped into a sci-fi book cover
That means this maybe isn’t the game you *imagined* from those trailers. If you hoped for things like pvp multiplayer or city building, piloting freighters, or building civilisations… that isn’t what NMS is. Over time it might become some of those things through updates.

For instance, freighters and building bases *are* coming! Read about updates coming here.

At launch though, it’s an infinite procedural sci-fi-space-survival-sandbox unlike anything you have ever played before. If you decide to play it, you’ll see just how closely it plays to those trailers, and to our original vision. It’s a weird game, it’s a niche game and it’s a very very chill game.

Thanks for the reply Sarni and that link Damien. It might be a great when i'm taking a break from competitive overwatch. I'll sleep on the idea of getting it.

I really hope they throw in a little horror stuff down the road though.

Cruising through space and getting attacked by a giant monster would be awesome and terrifying.

I would LOVE for there to be, in certain rare dank reaches of space, massive creatures that are basically spaceships in and of themselves. Space-whales, and the like. Or something utterly terrifying, as you're saying.

"Very chill" makes me think of FTL. If it's half as enjoyable as that game, I shall be very content.

That's the kind of thing that would make me definitely want the game.
That and settlements on planets of intelligent species

One of the things that have to be mentioned here after watching popele play is some of the amazing landscapes, scenery and mind blowing vistas I've seen so far, and the fact it's all being created by sheer mathematics, physics models and geological algorithms. Usually in a game everything has been handcrafted in order to have a certain aesthetic quality but here these worlds are just being generated by pure numbers, some of the things I've seen so far are amazing, last night this guy stumbled across a canyon that was hundreds of metres deep and varying from 30-50 metres across & stretched on for seemingly miles. It had all these glowing minerals along the canyon floor it was the first time I'd seen something like that after watching loads of people streaming over that past few days, looked pretty amazing tbh.

Same here :D I think I'm gonna give it a rest tonight seeing the game will be playable at midnight.

Also:

Whenever devs are tight-lipped, it's normally just because they literally, legally, can't talk about a thing. Man, you would surprised how wrapped up most devs are in contracts and nonesense. Often for instance lots of devs will have a clause that says "you literally can't say the name of platform X". Knowing this it's really funny watching interviews where devs are squirming trying not to the word Wii or whatever when being asked about some industry thing :) - you see us say things like "well the thing about supporting... that particular console is..."

He's not responded to question on VR support

For all you large creature lovers (from the AMA):

Oh man, I hate questions like this, because like wouldn't you just rather discover for yourself? Huge creatures are out there, and I haven't seen them on streams yet. They are rare.

EDIT: The question was
"Hey Sean, In an old trailer I saw huge snakes/wurms, are those still in the game?

Also have a nice day!"

I said feck it and I'm pre downloading now. Not going to look at any reviews, just want to experience it myself. They deserve that for the effort and size of the project they took on.

Never bought a pre-launch game through PSN, how does it work? I pre-download it now and can play it later tonigt? What time, 0:00 in my country or is it same time worldwode?

Yeah as soon as it's downloaded, it'll be playable the second it's launched.

I saw a video where he explained how they do it, and that it's basically based off noise. So he showed like a planet made from a simple sine wave, and then went on to more complicated patterns. It's incredible stuff. And yeah, I watched so many hours of streams, and it's still common for me to go "wooow, that's different!" at some kind of feature in the landscape, or a creature. Watched Sean Murray stream on twitch yesterday, and he seems to marvel at what his algorithms are producing as well, which is really encouraging :)

Gone dark mostly since the patch, though, aside from the odd glimpses just to see what draw distance and whatnot looks like after the patch. That and Murray's 1 hr stream.

Rushed to my mailbox this morning just to see if I had been lucky enough for it to arrive a day early. It did not :( I'm a fecking idiot for wanting a physical copy.

So how am I going to sleep then? I've got to work tomorrow. Better download it during the night and play tomorrow after work. You people only create me problems.
