Gaming No Man's Sky | 25th May New FREE Update: Leviathan

Also no dinosaur riding :(

Blimey. That looks kind of crap. The "dinosaurs" look terrible and the whole shooting stuff to extract minerals dynamic must get super dull.

I haven't gamed in years but have been following this with interest. Building an almost completely random environment using algorithms where you can discover/explore planets nobody has ever seen before is such a clever idea. If the gameplay is as lame as it seems in that video, though, it will probably be one of those ideas which was great in theory but underwhelming in execution. They set themselves a brutal task tbf. Gameplay aside, it's a hell of a job to art design a single alien species. Trying to cobble together shit-loads of them in a way that makes discovering new planets worth the effort is basically impossible.

You say she's your wife but it sounds to me like you're an oblivious patient in a Shutter Island-esque facility for the criminally insane.

Hah, you know, I have sometimes wondered whether the real me is frothing in some institution and that this is all a delusion.

From the comment section of the video

''I think this is one of those cases where the people who designed the game's systems really fell in love with those systems and forgot that to most people a clever algorithm isn't interesting for its own sake. They can fly around there and admire all the varied stuff their maths is spitting out, but to an outsider it's just a lot of homogeneous randomly generated bollocks.''

Might have a point.

 I don't think I've ever seen you post in a gaming thread. Weird.

 Same. I managed to piss off the Sentinels within five minutes though. Don't know how I survived.

Same here!! Trying to mine done iron in piece God dammit. Seriously though my planet is wacky as feck. It was moving trees and weird slug creatures.

Gah, I wish Amazon did autorip with PS4 games... preparing myself with a Coward Run on FTL.

What kind of planets did you guys start on?

Didn't see that many creatures.

I watched this video earlier and it killed whatever little hype I'd managed to conjure up in recent days. I know it sounds fickle but I tend to agree with Jim Sterling on most of his impressions.

Incidentally, why is this so expensive for an alleged indie game?

I've just stopped playing now, Jesus. I've visited two more planets aside from my starter planet and all I can say the game exactly what is hoped it'd be. The 2nd planet was an icy ruthless planet with hostile creatures and few recourses, quickly got off that. My third is a beautiful lush planet full of recorces including gold and trading stations. Think I'll be staying there for some time before I move on. Absolutely adored my first few hours with this.

OH SHIT, is that the time? :wenger: Ill post some pictures & impressions tomorrow , but loving it so far. Explored three planets fairly extensively and did a few things on the other two in my starter system then decided it was time to get my hyperdrive built and went to the next star system saved and now its time to sleep.

Have you redeemed your pre order ship? Does it alter the gameplay much? I redeemed the 10000 units one when i realized how measely that amount is.

Gasping to play this now. Fecking work and fecking stupid PC release date.

Have to go back to pre 2010 for my last one! This game has fascinated me since I first read about it though.

I only remember one post of you related to gaming. You were complaining about the "commuting" aspect of open world games like GTA. Whenever I'm leisurely exploring the wonderful sights of GTA V, doing nothing but takibg pictures or exploring he little alleys and architecture of the place (something which still has value 3 years after launch, such is the level of detail) I sometimes remember that.

Now you're back into games and chose one which has nothing but "commuting" aimlessly and exploring. The irony :)

You're right! I've never liked sandbox games, so that's probably a big factor in why I find this so unappealing. The popularity of those games was probably one of the big reasons I got turned off gaming.

Decision time

Cancel my pre order and move deposit to different game or get this game?
I decided to buy it. I think my daughter will love aspects of it, but also think it will be a game that I return to.

Also, I think there needs to be more creativity and risk-taking among game designers - so something like this should be encouraged.

Looking forward to giving it a go later.

I had actually said a while ago that I will buy it either way as my way to support the developers

Mmmm maybe I will get it

Wasn't sure what to expect with this game. Decided I would buy it late last night via the PSN store. Logged on around Midnight and the next thing I knew it was 3:30 am. and I had only managed to make it to my second planet which was a little more hostile than the first. It took me a while to get going on my first planet figuring out the controls and what the feck I was supposed to be doing in terms of repairing my ship. The planet was a little sparce and so was the second one which has me looking forward to finding one which is more inhabited in terms of life. All in all it is a very niche game and I cant see myself getting sucked into it like GTA, COD etc. Overall though I think when I do play it I will be quite immersed and will likely play it for a couple of hours at a time travelling from planet to planet.

Metacritic is the last place you should go to for PS exclusive games reviews, Uncharted 4 had lots of 0 scores on release from salty Xbox fans...idiots

Nevermind the poor sods... probably just a bunch of kiddywinks who didn't earn enough good boy points to get their chicken tendies this week

Its capacity isn't really any different to the starter ship. It does seem to have an extra ability but didn't see what it was.

Had enough time earlier to setup and have a brief look at the environment of my first planet, and it looks amazing. Woke up surrounded by pink, snow-capped trees on the side of a small mountain range, temperature a brisk -30 degrees, with crow-like birds circling overhead. Look up into the sky and see two moons (planets?) hanging there, with what looks to be the glint of water on their surfaces. Haven't even moved yet but am about to get started properly! Apparently my planet is abundant in both flora and fauna, so I may be here a while.
