It went similar to how I expected bar a few things. Most of the stuff in here was either something we didn't know about previously (thus nothing to show on Pokémon, Bayonetta, Metroid as there probably isn't much worthy of discussing yet as they're so far off) or things we kind of knew about but didn't have full details yet (Rabbids DLC). Obviously, lots of smaller announcements, DLC, indie games etc are always going to be in every non-specific Direct, so I rarely regard them as of much interest to most people (bar the hardcore for a specific game). The things that did surprise me:
- No Yoshi - I assume this is further in development than most of their first party titles, but they've probably decided to hold back on this until at least June in order to spread out releases. It seems like most of the games announced here will be out by the end of May (bar a couple of third party things that were only just announced). I'd guess anything listed as 'Spring 2018' (almost everything) will be out in this time frame or at least early June. Another reason for Yoshi's delay is probably due to it being another side-scrolling platformer. We saw Kirby already and then my next topic of discussion, Donkey Kong, being announced. Three same genre games within three months would be a bit overkill.
- Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze Port - I get that it's a very underappreciated game as a Wii U release, but I think if they were going to port this they should have done a lot more. Not with the actual game itself, as the new character and tweaks do shake things up, but why not go a step further? Bayonetta is coming over with a double pack, as did Resident Evil Revelations. I'd have hoped that they could have also ported the Wii version of Donkey Kong Country Returns in a double pack with this, and even added the 3DS versions new content to it for a 'definitive edition', as they did with Hyrule Warriors. Missed opportunity there IMO. I also thought they'd be working on a new DK game rather than all of this in the first place, but oh well.
- The World Ends With You - Very surprised by this, especially since they kicked off the Direct with it. I thought this had just died and while I guess this is a remastered version, I'm interested. I never actually played the original, just saw a friend play it on DS and he said it was awesome. Never looked into it too much, but I may get this if the price is right. I don't think I'd pay more than £40 though unless it has massive enhancements and more to do (I can't imagine it being a massive game due it to being an original DS game).
I didn't think Pokken would get DLC - I thought that was done, but it may be an attempt to revive it after probably only 'decent' sales. Was also 50/50 on Mario getting anything extra. It's cool that it has, though it doesn't interest me. I was expecting them to discuss the Rabbids DLC as they did, but rather than Mario & Pokken, I thought they'd give us more details on the Xenoblade DLC that is coming. I also expected more 3DS presence, but considering Pokémon Crystal on the eShop will likely be my last DS game purchase, I don't mind if nothing else is ever shown.
tl;dr This basically just covers most of the main stuff until the end of Spring. What's just after that? e3...
