Gaming Nintendo Switch

It went similar to how I expected bar a few things. Most of the stuff in here was either something we didn't know about previously (thus nothing to show on Pokémon, Bayonetta, Metroid as there probably isn't much worthy of discussing yet as they're so far off) or things we kind of knew about but didn't have full details yet (Rabbids DLC). Obviously, lots of smaller announcements, DLC, indie games etc are always going to be in every non-specific Direct, so I rarely regard them as of much interest to most people (bar the hardcore for a specific game). The things that did surprise me:

- No Yoshi - I assume this is further in development than most of their first party titles, but they've probably decided to hold back on this until at least June in order to spread out releases. It seems like most of the games announced here will be out by the end of May (bar a couple of third party things that were only just announced). I'd guess anything listed as 'Spring 2018' (almost everything) will be out in this time frame or at least early June. Another reason for Yoshi's delay is probably due to it being another side-scrolling platformer. We saw Kirby already and then my next topic of discussion, Donkey Kong, being announced. Three same genre games within three months would be a bit overkill.

- Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze Port - I get that it's a very underappreciated game as a Wii U release, but I think if they were going to port this they should have done a lot more. Not with the actual game itself, as the new character and tweaks do shake things up, but why not go a step further? Bayonetta is coming over with a double pack, as did Resident Evil Revelations. I'd have hoped that they could have also ported the Wii version of Donkey Kong Country Returns in a double pack with this, and even added the 3DS versions new content to it for a 'definitive edition', as they did with Hyrule Warriors. Missed opportunity there IMO. I also thought they'd be working on a new DK game rather than all of this in the first place, but oh well.

- The World Ends With You - Very surprised by this, especially since they kicked off the Direct with it. I thought this had just died and while I guess this is a remastered version, I'm interested. I never actually played the original, just saw a friend play it on DS and he said it was awesome. Never looked into it too much, but I may get this if the price is right. I don't think I'd pay more than £40 though unless it has massive enhancements and more to do (I can't imagine it being a massive game due it to being an original DS game).

I didn't think Pokken would get DLC - I thought that was done, but it may be an attempt to revive it after probably only 'decent' sales. Was also 50/50 on Mario getting anything extra. It's cool that it has, though it doesn't interest me. I was expecting them to discuss the Rabbids DLC as they did, but rather than Mario & Pokken, I thought they'd give us more details on the Xenoblade DLC that is coming. I also expected more 3DS presence, but considering Pokémon Crystal on the eShop will likely be my last DS game purchase, I don't mind if nothing else is ever shown.

tl;dr This basically just covers most of the main stuff until the end of Spring. What's just after that? e3...

I'd love to see whole new editions of titles like Contra and Castlevania. However, I shall refrain from holding my breath.

Why not 3D? I mean there always more at risk going that way but the potential reward could be fantastic.
Could be. I just think other games do 3D versions of them better than they would be. Like Dark Souls is basically 3D Castlevania IMO, done really well.

Plus I'm just a sucker for the originals and would love more. Another game like Super Castlevania (and as good) would be one of my most wanted games

You're probably right. I would certainly still be keen on new versions of either title whether it be 2D or 3D. Actually if they did them in the former format but with proper hi-res modern visuals we'd likely see some amazing results.

Smart comparison with Castlevania and Dark Souls as well. What would be a comparable one for Contra? Gears of War maybe?

Yeah HD 2D games would be amazing!

I dunno what the 3D equivalent of Contra would be, I don't play first or third person shooters that much. Any that's fast and hard as hell really

Don’t forget this was just a Mini Direct - these are just the games at the start of the year.

Personally looking forward to Mario tennis, Kirby and the Donkey Kong game.

I’ll get Tropical Freeze because I didn’t own a Wii u and probably Mario golf and Kirby but the rest wasn’t great.

I'm starting to believe the rumours of Nintendo's paid online service being pushed back holds some water. I swear it was originally planned for Summer/Autumn last year before being pushed to January. But, we've heard nothing of it for ages bar '2018' and some Italian website saying it was now 'Fall 2018'.

It could make some sense for the new Pokémon game to release around the same time as the paid online service though. If you want to battle and trade online, subscribe to this first... Could also launch with a Smash Bros. title a bit earlier though, both would see huge online play.

Might have been better if it they had announced an entirely new game in the DK Country series.

Does this differ from their existing online service? Or isn't there one to speak of currently? I've read about the Virtual Console service being replaced by Classic Games Selections instead but was unsure of this was related to what you are referring to.

Online has been free on Nintendo consoles forever so far, but the quality of the service is average - poor in comparison with Microsoft and Sony. We don't know a huge deal yet, but better quality connections and more games utilising voice chat is likely to happen, maybe finally a system level party chat / lobbies. Apparently free classic games would be downloadable each month if you are subscribed, much like how Sony do it, but they offer more recent games which I doubt Nintendo will do (I think it'll be NES and SNES initially). I'd also hope for cloud saving if we're paying to be able to use online.

We're not sure how they'll tackle virtual console yet, it probably won't be called that but I can't see the online store differing too much from previous iterations. Main gripe with Nintendo is that this kind of thing is never available day one, I'd like to think by now when a new console is released, it has the full content of the previous consoles online store available for download (bar anything that can't physically be played on the system).

Things could change as it's been delayed a lot, but originally we were told it will cost about half as much Xbox Live for a year. It needs to be better than half the quality IMO though

never played one, looking forward to it because of the persona games. :P
i've never played them but I adore Persona 4 & 5. Are they similar?
Not really similar. Persona is more of a absurd rpg life simulator. Shin megami tensei is more typical dark jrpg.
Biggest thing is that persona is a spinoff series to shin megami tensei.

Also, if you have a ps2, try and get ahold of shin megami tensei nocturne. Fantastic game.

I don't think it was said it would be January - just 'early 2018'. If it introduces cloud saves I'm in...

Is the story usually good?

Honestly can't remember (not because it's likely not worth remembering considering it's mentioned as a jrpgs all time great but because I've died 5 times since playing the game). But I remember enjoying the gameplay as a rpg a lot more than I tend to with the average ones. And I play a ton of jrpgs and always have.

Well if it's anywhere close to as good or fun as persona 5 I'm sure I'll love it.

Think Persona 5 with a mix of pokemon-like capture demons.
Story-wise as I mentioned I remember it being way darker, as in end of the world dark from very early on.
Not much that surrounds a normal life like the Persona games seem to have. :)

I love Nintendo

Reddit is so funny, Nintendo blatantly said it was for kids before the announcement and they’re all moaning they don’t like it. Well you’re not children feckwits.

Everyone thought it was virtual console reveal.

To be fair it’s the type of thing I’d love as a kid. You get to build shit and play after.

I legit laughed all the way througout that labo video :lol:

I still have no idea what I just watched.
