Gaming Nintendo Switch

I find it plenty big for most games; to the point that my handheld:docked time is about 70:30 or so. Quality wise I think it's great; 720p feels like a quantum leap compared to the 240p on 3DS, and maybe it's the colour balance or something but I remember picking up BoTW and feeling like it looked better in handheld despite being 900p docked, just looked more colourful or warm or something, can't really explain it;

On the bolded point my girlfriend made the purchase on the same premise and hasn't looked back; she has her PS4 for her big-budget AAA purchases, and has the Switch as a nice counterbalance for top quality Nintendo titles, local multiplayer games, JRPGs, and games which she would like a portable version of (something about playing Skyrim lying on the couch in front of the fireplace sounds comfy as feck).

Cool. Thanks for that. I'll probably be using mostly in portable so that's good to know. Have you played it split screen in portable mode much?

I'd imagine it could get quite cramped. I don't plan on doing it much, but now and then maybe with Mario Kart or something

Ok this last level in Mario Odyssey is absolutely killing me. It’s savage

My digital version just finished downloading (console arrived today). Might wait until tomorrow to try it out. Nearly level 50 in Dragon's Dogma remake and it's nearly time to go visit Bitterblack Isle.

Not really Zelda-like, more in the final fantasy mould with a slightly different battle system. Its very good though.
Never played that either, I meant other than the turns based battle, is there a bit of climbing or maybe a bit open world that you can do side-quests and fun stuff?

Do you guys think Xenoblade will be worth getting? Is it Zelda like? Never played a Xenoblade title.
If you like RPG's, specifically Japanese ones you'll probably enjoy it. I've played the previous two games on Wii and Wii U, but I just couldn't get used to the battle system even over two games. I think it's really horrible, but if you can get around that then everything else about the game is amazing. I'd hope there is some kind of demo or way to get used to the battle system to see if you like it. Might be best to watch some Youtube videos on it.

What do people think will be some of the next must have Switch exclusives? I just can't justify buying a new console for only one game (Mario), especially after I got a Wii U.

You could sell your Wii U and replace it with a Switch. I'm considering selling mine. I have never liked the UI on the Wii U. It actually put me off turning the thing on.

MK8 is supposed to be a lot better on Switch (60 fps, etc).

the likes of CEX will give a you a good price for the Wii U and games

Don't think I'd be able to sell it over here. At least not for a decent price.

Its 60fps on Wii U right for 1 and 2 player?

Anyone who is interested in Rogue likes and RPGs should check out Moon Hunters. Has a beautiful soundtrack too.

Not true 60fps, no. Close, but it did do some fudgery and drop frames.

As someone who played MK8 a lot and presumably ended up knowing each track off by heart, you'll instantly notice the difference on the switch version. It's just that bit faster and all the turn ins/hop points are different because of it. I had to basically relearn the tracks to get back up to my times, and 200cc is even more ridiculous

Thanks for clarifying. In 3/4 player it was pretty poor admittedly.

More or less noticable than that Gears upgrade you were bashing? :smirk:

I'm sure it looks much better. Upto two players I thought it ran fine and the art style more than made up for the lack of 1080p though.

I'm with that person. Since i could get Zelda on my Wii U and the others I'd want are definitive editions that I already have, I'm really interested to see what is coming next year for the Switch.

 Touche ;) To be fair, I'm generally against cynical remakes and hd updates that soon, so that's why when I list games I leave out MK8 for those with a Wii U. However you can see why they did it, Switch needs sales and chatter to get the developers in, plus the WiiU sold so poorly I'd bet there's way more switch owners who never played it than do. If anything, I think there's a few more great games they could put in this and bring them to a new audience. Shouldn't be full price though, then again I think I paid £35 for MK8 from Amazon which is great value for someone who's never played it.

As a machine in itself though, the Switch is a really great piece of kit. I wouldn't worry so much about next year, after all this year was supposed to be a wash out too according to the cynics. The big boys seem to be on board with it more and more, so I reckon we are going to see a fair few more big surprise releases.

It's a perfect compliment to having an Xbone/PS4/PC and it really has done what the WiiU could have if they hadn't fecked around with that machine and it's bloody name :(

Was holding out given what I had heard prior to release (30fps, signficant graphical downgrades etc.) but having read the uniformly positive reviews DOOM is getting I caved and ordered it on Amazon...I have feck all self-control

I'll be honest I've not played it in splitscreen yet; I could see that being an issue alright but given how hard Nintendo is pushing the Switch as a pull-out-and-play multiplayer device I'd like to believe they did a decent job...I'll have to defer to the experience of others on this one though.

It will be my first Xenoblade game as well, but if it's anything like the first Xenoblade Chronicles a good friend of mine tells me the best comparison in would be a hybrid between JRPG characters/plot etc. with game mechanics very like that of an MMO, except offline (in terms of using a basic attack alongside more powerful abilities requiring charge/cooldown, ability to go to areas with monsters way above your level and get oneshotted etc.).

The last RPG Japenese game I played was Ni Nu Kuni on the PS3 but then it let you fly on a dragon and that was extremely fun to do.

Ok on Mario has anyone here done
The Darkest Side of the moon yet?

Because I’m about ready to bin my switch it’s the most frustrating thing I’ve ever tried in a long time.

I had a couple of attempts before I realised it's a
Boss Rush

I've gone back to grinding moons for now and plan to go back later. It definitely will require an extra heart though.

Nah not that one, even further ahead than that.

My Switch with neon joycons and 5 games was stolen on the train back to Manchester last night. Absolutely gutted. :(
Ouch :(

I'm praying Nintendo go with a cloud-based system once the paid online comes in January. If they do go down the route of releasing a smaller, more portable version of the hardware at some point as well, that'd be awesome as I'd be more confident in taking that out and about with me (especially if I don't lose all my shit if it were lost or stolen).

Need some help, guys! Having turned on my Switch for the first time since April, my e-shop is in Japanese, how do I go about changing this to English? I do remember creating a Japanese account but I deleted that and the shop hasn't reverted back to English.

Edit: Sorted.

I am enjoying Mario more than I thought I would. I am playing it and The Surge on PS4 (think a futuristic Dark Souls). Spent the guts of an hour dying at the first boss in The Surge. Finally beat it so decided to enjoy some soothing Mario. I discovered a Bullet Bill Maze in which I proceeded to die an annoying amount of times.

The one in the sand kingdom with the rotating walls?

I know right?

People like to claim Dark Souls and all that are the hardest things ever but some of those Mario levels can be fecking frustrating

Then again, get a snes mini and really try hard...

(Btw how is the surge?)

I'm enjoying it so far. Looks nice, plays well and the level design is cool (very much like DS in that you progress through areas unlocking shortcuts). Combat is good with you being able to target specific body parts in order to get new armour. If you require right arm armour, start chopping arms off, etc. Not sure about some of the hit boxes on the first boss, mind you.

Can't go wrong for £12.95 new.
