Memory cards or anything else?

I probably should have done a little more research before buying.

Nothing essential right away mate, you'll just figure it out when you need something I guess. The only extras I really have so far are the screen protector, a case and an extra set of joycons for 2/4 players. An sd card will be needed eventually, but I've got a fair few games on cart and downloaded so far and haven't needed one yet.

I got one this weekend. Mario is absolutely amazing, I have to wait for Xmas to play zelda though.

I might treat myself to another game today though. What would people recommend?

In terms of single player Golf Story is a really fun little RPG very reminiscent of the old Mario Golf RPG on Gameboy. Cheap too. Also Mario and Rabbids is an excellent XCOM clone.

Multiplayer wise Pokken is a really solid fighting game and of course Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is outstanding.

Is the optional stuff also easy? Beating the story of 64 or Galaxy was easy but getting all possible stars was tricky.

Mario is amazing but I've reached Bowser in about 6 hours.

It is very easy.
All mario games are easy

Yep, this is kind of the point of them

If you beat Bowser after 6 hrs and claim it's easy, then not only have you played it just to do that (which is a waste anyway), but you've also missed the point. You are supposed to beat him first to then unlock the exploration further anyway.

Personally, I've spent way longer and not beat him yet. Hell I reckon I've spent a good 3-4 hours fecking around in New Donk City alone!

Overall it's no easier than Galaxy/G2. The only thing I'll say is the boss battles are way too easy, even the hard mode versions are pretty simple, and there's a lack of creativity and variation with them too.

I never played either Galaxy game but its certainly easier than the other 3d mario games I have played (64, Sunshine and the Wii u / 3DS one)

Still took me about 15 hours to complete the main game then went on to play a lot of what comes after and now Im going through each world collecting every moon and purple coin.

not sure if I will 100% or not. But the urge to keep playing is certainly thee

It's not supposed to be dark souls is it? It's a Mario game.

Remember Mario is also made for Kids. That's the audience too. So they ain't going to make it so hard that kids just turn it off in frustration.

I'm not sure it's easier than 3D world, but you kind of nailed the point with the urge to keep playing. The best Mario games are about that, the need to explore.

BTW I still think a HD update of Sunshine is in order if people want a game like this but with more challenge.

I’ve said before don’t talk dirty like this there’s only so much fantasising I can do :(

It's not supposed to be that difficult but I definitely remember Mario being more difficult. I regularly got stuck on 64 for example. Takes nothing away from the game though, it's an absolute classic.

I grabbed MK8 and Rabbids today. Rabbids seems okay but not sure if it'll hold my attention long term, one criticism I have on MK8 is that everything is unlocked from the start. I have no real reason to play single player, admittedly I only really bought for multiplayer but on the Wii U version I played through all the CC to unlock the tracks.

BoI should be delivered tomorrow so I should have enough to tide me over until Xmas when I get Zelda

So i was thinking of getting one of these for Christmas as i think it would compliment my PS4 nicely.

I have a question about the screen when using it in portable mode.

Basically, how is it? Do you find it big enough? How's the quality? I've read a few things on it and the size of the screen has come up, so was just wondering what peoples opinions were?

So I’ve been playing Zelda since Friday, which is when I also bought the Switch. My impression up to now is, that although it’s a pretty great game, I thought it’d be the game to truly rival The Witcher 3. The truth is, imo, it doesn’t come anywhere close. There’s just something that feels like it’s a game with mechanics that were present in games made 2 generations ago. It certainly doesn’t feel like the epic, revolutionary open world masterpiece it was talked up to be in reviews. Maybe I need to give it more time, or simply lower my expectations.

Out of interest, what mechanics are you talking about and what games you've played lately doesn't have mechanics present in games from then?

The first thing that stuck out were the NPC’s. They are likes the NPC’s out of a Pokemon game, or Morrowind rather then a game that’s supposed to immerse you in its world. None of them are memorable whatsoever, or seem to react to what’s going on. The towns are also very copy and paste, absolutely nothing nothing about them. The next thing is that yes, it’s a massive world but it’s lazily built with few enemy types/variations and breakable weapons. How can you give lore to weapons that have been past down through generations and then have them break after a few even simple encounters? Lastly, it seems to me that in reviews, a lot is spoken about the fact that you can climb anything, when it’s been probably the most tedious part of the game for me. Just because you can climb a hill, which in many cases I found nothing on top, doesn’t enhance it as an open world game.

All being said, it’s still a great game and I could also go on about the positives. Maybe I’m just too glued to TW3’s experience and simply can’t appreciate any other open word games.

Fair enough mate. I could go on and on about the Witcher 3 in similar ways, especially the weapons, that's opinions for you! I think what you can do in the game far outweighs what you can't, and the world is far from lazily built if you look at what you can actually do (it's easily the most consistent world ever built in terms of physics and little touches, that's for sure) but I can totally get where you are coming from. I think certainly as a way forward with the attention to detail, it's definitely the template a lot of future games will be built on, but I wouldn't call it perfect myself. Both Oot and Zelda 3 still outdo it for me.

Still easily between that and Mario for goty though. What a first year for a new console

Indeed, what a year it’s been. For all my moaning, I haven’t even touched Mario Odessy yet, which I bought with Zelda

By the way, any tips on how I can get some good starting armor, easily enough? Feels like I’ve died 1000 times due to being so weak.

Have you still got your Wii U? Having not played Odyssey, Galaxy 2 is easily the best Mario I've played and one of the best games of last gen (if not). You should definitely play both, hopefully playing them after Odyssey doesn't take away from them

To be honest, I mostly used the stealth armour. One thing I will say is that getting the sets really opens up the game and you'll enjoy moving around the world way more. Have you found the climbing bandana for a start? It makes climbing much better, especially when you get the full set and upgrade it a bit.

The easiest way though is to do some simple cooking/potion mixing. You'll be very surprised at just how much even the low level stuff boosts your stats.

It shouldn't do, they easily stand on their own and Odyssey is a different game entirely in many ways.

They are still must plays for me.

I find it plenty big for most games; to the point that my handheld:docked time is about 70:30 or so. Quality wise I think it's great; 720p feels like a quantum leap compared to the 240p on 3DS, and maybe it's the colour balance or something but I remember picking up BoTW and feeling like it looked better in handheld despite being 900p docked, just looked more colourful or warm or something, can't really explain it;

On the bolded point my girlfriend made the purchase on the same premise and hasn't looked back; she has her PS4 for her big-budget AAA purchases, and has the Switch as a nice counterbalance for top quality Nintendo titles, local multiplayer games, JRPGs, and games which she would like a portable version of (something about playing Skyrim lying on the couch in front of the fireplace sounds comfy as feck).

Any good lesser known RPGs on Switch?

Golf Story is genuinely excellent, mind you I'm biased as Mario Golf on GBC is one of my favourite games ever. As mentioned if it's anything like the previous game Xenoblade 2 should be excellent. Project Octopath Traveller is one of my most anticipated games for 2018/19/whenever the feck. Disgaea 5 is fecking mental but by all accounts a solid tactical RPG.

Not to mention, core Pokemon game on a home console to come

Any of you talking about difficulty just wait till the bit I’ve just reached. I’m far too tired and frustrated to play it anymore

I'm tempted by this, but the controller looks awkward as feck.

Is it?

No, it works really well especially as two seperate controllers.

Am I the only one that;

a) Uses it almost exclusively on the TV
b) Uses the Joy-Con grip?

A)I tend to mix it up. B) I use the grips for 4 player MK, but not really when I'm 2-handing Zelda, Mario or Splatoon.
