Gaming Nintendo Switch

Looks like the embargo on the Mario reviews just ended. Metacritic is down, amusingly, so I grabbed this list from VG 24/7.

What the hell is playzine?

Though a really neat game, Super Mario Odyssey is an utterly underwhelming adventure for every long-term Super Mario fan in existence. Unless Cappy brainwashed you. In that case, you are a satisfied zombie customer now. No, seriously, only a zombie would find a healthy challenge in this pleasant but disappointingly easy Super Mario Walk-in-the-park. Sorry - Odyssey.

They gave it 75.

Yeah it's easy to do, I took a break mid-way through to prolong the experience. Definitely beat Ruta and progress though, the weapons and powers you start getting really push the game on and it's true that you keep learning cool new stuff right up until the end. Especially getting all the extra clothing sets too, they really make moving through the world much easier and even more fun (the full climbing gear and swimming gear upgraded to level 2 each are simply outstanding). BTW for Ruta, I beat that dungeon with 4 hearts and attack potions my first time through, so don't fear it. Worst case, make some food that gives you bonus hearts, but the boss really isn't much trouble once you learn his predictable patterns.

And yeah, dual controls is so easily the way forward in that game for me. It makes aiming bows/powers just so much easier and more fun :)

I can't beat Ruta with my current character. I have six hearts.

looking forward to picking it up tomorrow

How is this only 5GB?

As I've always said, games and game development is a hugely bloated field these days.

It's simply a case of people have blu ray sized discs to work with and gpus optimised for show rather than go and they don't care about the finer points and any kind of optimisation, not to mention artistic talent.

What? Are you talking about the actual boss fight within Ruta? If so, you need to step back and arrow the eye on the first phase, get your eye in on the distance between the spear throws and the swipes and you are golden. In the second phase, cryosis the blocks then do the same. You only need a few good shots with electric arrows and he's toast.

It's like that one tosser who went against botw.

Clickbait.

Jesus it’s getting BotW scores, last time I checked it was 98 on metacritic.

Can’t wait, but I’m out tomorrow and Saturday night and i’ll Have stranger things season 2 to watch this weekend

Everybody get Mario Odyssey and play it to death. It's just something else. Ridiculously good.

Recommend it? I think a Switch is going on my Christmas list - i'd seen a load of amazing reviews on Odyssey - the thought of "cappy" sounded terrible, but appears like Nintendo have knocked it out of the park with this one...

I just can't believe how good it is. I got it yesterday and feel like I'm achieving a lot with how many of the 'Moons' I've collected, but then I read there's over 800 of them to find if you want to 100% it. There's a good 60+ hours content here easily if you want to go for the lot. This is the Mario game everyone has been waiting for since Mario 64. Not to say the others released since then weren't brilliant, because they were. This is just on another level of special and something every fan of gaming needs to play. Can't recommend it enough, Nintendo have outdone themselves. It's amazing how they've managed to smash it home with this and Zelda in the same year. They have somehow revolutionized their two biggest games and got them out in the first year of a new, amazing console. The value in getting a Switch is there by Christmas easily, you won't be disappointed with what you can get on this machine.

The Switch has had a near perfect first year (still some time to go!).

I have a feeling this console will be talked about in the same way as the SNES and N64 in 10 years time... something you can’t imagine being said about the Wii U, Wii and maybe even the GameCube.

Yeah, two absolute masterpieces in Zelda and Mario. They managed to bring most of what was good about Wii U to Switch for the audience that never played certain games (and actually had a plan of action and direction for the console). If they manage to get Pokémon out in its second year, this console will be in the argument as their best ever.

While a lot of these upcoming games for the rest of this year might not appeal to as many people now, due to them being available elsewhere and probably cheaper, I still think they're great options and will boost sales over the Christmas period. Doom, LA Noire, Skyrim, Rocket League, Dragonball Xenoverse 2 etc are all cool to see. There's a lot of support and something for everyone, it's a brilliant library of games within 8-9 months.

Cheers Havak! I think i'll definitely be getting on either for / around Christmas.

I think the console is retailing at £279.99 on Game / Amazon. Does anyone think we will see a price drop for / immediately after Christmas?

Maybe a good bundle.

But I don't see a price drop as the console is selling well. It was the best selling console in America too last month.

Not much chance of a price drop, but some of the best games can be found at reasonable prices to balance things out a bit. You'll be extremely lucky to get a Switch console at less than RRP, but games like Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe can be found sub £40, while you can easily get Mario Odyssey for about £41. Zelda might still be a little more difficult to find that cheap, but under £50 for sure. ShopTo.net and Amazon are usually pretty good.

Embracing indies as much as they did was genius too. Lot of games that are perfect for pick up and play here and there, on a console you can carry around... Plus often retro graphics that suit the small screen just lovely.

They've nailed the Switch, so far.

Just need a good GTA, or GTA styled game for it now, even a port of IV. Ohh, and Red Dead before the sequel comes about.

I reckon I could get a huge chunk towards a Switch if I was to sell/trade in the Wii U and all it's games as they still have good resale value (the games do anyway, not sure about the console).

Only concern is losing out on multiplayer gaming which is essentially what the Wii U has become now. The controllers for switch seem crazy expensive, and there's no NintendoLand, NSMBU or Mario 3d World.

If only they could pull out their finger with virtual console - then I'll buy it!

Edit: How are Nintendo with digital games otherwise? If I get the Switch, would I be able to download any Switch game I want?

Downloads are fine but the Switch only comes in models of 32gb storage maximum. You'd have to fork out for a Micro SD Card if you want to go mostly digital and they're pretty pricey for something over 128gb. I haven't done the math, but I'd wager you can get Splatoon 2, Zelda, Mario, and Mario Kart downloaded and not fill up the internal storage completely (okay, might be pushing it there but it'd be close). Something like NBA 2K18 would be too much though.

The cartridges are a little bit more expensive to produce than everyone realised, probably even Nintendo, so it has put a lot of developers off in how they approach things. For example, DOOM will have the single player mode on the cartridge, but the rest of the game will have to be downloaded. NBA 2K18 has 8gb of the game on the cartridge, but you need to download the other 25gb or so anyway. It makes it kind of pointless to buy the physical release in a way. The 32gb Switch flash carts are so expensive that companies won't want to put their games on that when they can just expect us to buy SD Cards and download most of it. This will generally be the case with third party, mainly the yearly releases like sports games and CoD if something like that comes. Why spend more producing the physical copy when it's a yearly release that loses half its value once the customer buy the thing?

Nintendo are following suit and charging for the online service come January, so I think that's when we'll start to see them push out all the Virtual Console stuff. It's a huge selling point for a lot of people and the main issue is going to be that game saves and downloads are tied to consoles rather than accounts. Hopefully paying for this online service will rectify that and it'll be the last time we have to actually 'buy' these old games again. I'm hopeful that's the reason the Switch doesn't have the Virtual Console yet, anyway, if they're finally getting that sorted.

Little bit of a rant that turned into  but in the grand scheme of things, I think everyone will eventually get an SD Card anyway so it's not like it matters that much. I'll probably invest in one next year even though I'm more likely to buy physical games for the main games I play (sucker for limited editions).

Why? You can buy a decent third party controller for £30, and original one costs £60 which is in line with what Microsoft and Sony charge.

It has Mario Kart and FIFA which is a good start for multiplayer.

BTW I connected this to a dock yesterday to play NBA 2K18, as much as I think 30 FPS doesn't really spoil the fun in handheld mode, it's somehow way more noticable when docked and becomes borderline unplayable. They really should have cut down on graphics and gone for 60 FPS.

Quality info mate.

I love Nintendo, but Jesus are they shambles when it comes to certain things!

Eh? Xbox controllers go for £30 and PS4 go for around £40. But Sony have a good excuse as they have the touchpad on their controllers hence why it is costly than Microsoft.

Official Xbox/PS4 controllers can usually be got for about £35 in the UK. I haven't seen that with the Switch yet. Plus, as the consoles are much more popular, it's easy to ask people to with controllers with them (appreciate they have been around longer). And in general, the games on Xbox/PS4 are more catered to online and single player, or perhaps 2 players - rarely 4. Whereas my Wii U is great for playing 4 player which would cost a lot on the Switch.

Not saying this is a downside to the Switch as they are making some good cases for single player too - but more a consideration for me as to whether to trade a Wii U in for a Switch.

It's Super Mario 64 all over again  It's so good.

It's like 64, Sunshine and Galaxy all rolled into one! I think we need a thread for this, I've spent ridiculous amounts of time just exploring right from the ghost world. There's just so much going on.

I'm loving the desert world, just found that little side game shoutput to Mario64's penguin run too ;)

Just when we thought Zelda easily had this years Goty award down. Nintendo have smashed it big time.
