Gaming Nintendo 3DS vs PS Vita thread.

Thanks mate!

I finally beat him. As you said, patience was key here. At first I was trying to go all out and destroy him quickly and it's clearly impossible to do so. I leveled up to 62 which turned out to be key here. I used mainly Belphegor and Teddie was key in this battle with all -undas and -ujas. Took me like 20 minutes to get it done but I'm now past him.

The game really starts to get good from here, when it offers you the chance to save the game do it. It'll warn you that your decisions from that point will greatly affect the outcome of your game, and they arent lying

So I caved and bought myself a Nintendo 3DS with a copy of Pokemon White 2 (purely because I know it will give me 50+ hours of gameplay).

I also happen to have £50 amazon vouchers burning a hole in my pocket, so the inevitable question is - what game(s) do I get?

I've heard good things about Luigi's mansion, less so for Donkey Kong Country. Can anyone give me a quick 1-5 on the best games to get, and might order 2 off amazon using my vouchers. Which of the Super Mario's is better?

I know Sarni and Olly are avid Nintendo fans, so if you have any recommendations guys, they'd be appreciated.

Cheers.

Pokémon was a good choice :) and the 3DS versions (Pokémon X & Y) will be out in October, so it's likely that once you've got your money's worth from White 2, you'll be ready for these. It's most likely that at some point you'll be able to send your monsters over from White 2 to X or Y as well.

Luigi's Mansion 2 is definitely up there as one of the best 3DS games. I admit I have kind of neglected it but that was in favour of the Pokémon Video Game Championships, a holiday to Amsterdam (where I'd rather not take my console) and still mashing it up on Monster Hunter every other day. But it's something I'll definitely be trying to complete between now and Pokémon's release on 3DS. I think everyone who owns this would probably suggest you get it, it's definitely the best first party game of the year from Nintendo (so far).

Super Mario 3D Land and New Super Mario Bros. 2 are both great games, but the latter is something that will feel a bit too 'same-old' if you have played the NSMB games on DS, Wii, or Wii U. However, if you haven't played many of those and have an urge for some Mario retro style, then this won't disappoint. Super Mario 3D Land is a longer game that IMO is something you'll get a bit more out of (unless you take a liking to the Coin Rush mode on NSMB2). It's a very unique Mario game, combining the 2D and 3D styles perfectly. It's so hard to say which you'll enjoy more, so I can only say get both. Maybe one now and then another later in the year - look to get them on the cheap if possible though I doubt it'll be easy.

Carrying on with the Mario theme, Mario Kart 7 (and any other Mario Kart game ever) is probably the game you'll get the most fun (and frustration) out of. It's obviously the best online multiplayer option on 3DS right now and it may well stay that way for the entire existence of 3DS (though I'd wager something like Monster Hunter 4 would rival it). But yeah, Mario Kart is always great if you like a less serious racer. Definitely worth the money.

I'll drop a small note on Paper Mario: Sticker Star as well, but this won't be for everyone. It's basically Mario in RPG form and the previous instalment in this series (that kept the same formula) was one of my favourite games of all time - Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door on the GameCube. In all honesty, Sticker Star does not match up to it as well as I'd have hoped, but it's still a good game. The comedy in it is great and the gameplay is something I enjoy. I just find it almost impossible to catch everything without using an online guide though. I've tried my hardest but you will just be walking around aimlessly looking for something you missed. I guarantee it. If you can get past this lack of direction and you're an RPG fan, it will probably win you over. But it wasn't quite as good as I'd hoped.

The only other games I own at the moment are Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask (great instalment, but only play it if you have played the others), Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (my favourite game at the moment, but much better value on Wii U with online play), and Resident Evil Revelations. I won't say much more about the first two as you you'll probably be best finding a pre-owned version of an old Layton game first and Monster Hunter, while great, is something that's not for everyone and takes a lot of time out of you (and is so much better with online multiplayer that I'd argue it's not worth buying the 3DS version unless you have a good few friends with it locally). Resident Evil, on the other hand, is something that really brings the series back to it's high point for me. It is true survival horror. The kind of game we grew up with on the PlayStation, none of this fast paced shooter action like every other game in the world. That might just be me, but it looks beautiful and feels a lot more scary and compelling that the latest Resident Evil games. Again though, however, it has recently been ported to Wii U, PS3, and 360 so those versions could surpass it (more-so the Wii U version due to second screen GamePad features).

As for games that I don't own (so my opinion barely matters), there's: Fire Emblem: Awakening which is hitting all the heights right now. Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, something that everyone adores. Kid Icarus: Uprising that I've not touched but have heard great things about. Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, I had this on Wii and it was great - guessing it's much of the same on 3DS. Animal Crossing is also out on Friday which I'm anticipating highly, but this is another game that won't be for everyone.

I've missed out a lot of great none-first-party games here, so hopefully someone else can touch upon those. But in general, most people tend to buy a Nintendo console for Nintendo games, so I thought I'd get those out of the way first ;D

Luigi's Mansion is an awesome game. I'm yet to get into it properly because I have other games to complete for now but from what I've played it's easily one of the best games for the system.

Super Mario 3D Land is a far better game than New Super Mario Bros 2 and also a must have. Resident Evil Revelations is pure awesome as well and if you feel like it, you should also play the remake of Metal Gear Solid 3. If you like puzzles you should try Professor Layton & The Miracle Mask, if you like strategy turn based RPGs then Fire Emblem is great and Paper Mario is also a very good game. Donkey Kong is supposedly very good and the new Animal Crossing is coming out on Friday and it's the highest rated 3DS game yet.

There are also some lower rated games like Lego City that are quite good but you may want to play top title before moving on to then.

Luigi's Mansion and Super Mario 3D Land are the first two I would recommend without hesitation.

Like Havak said, RE: Revelations has been ported to consoles, but a few reviews I've seen have said that the 3DS version is still better.

Actually, instead of re-thinking everything I'll just quote a post I made earlier for SirAF;

Super Mario 3D Land
Luigi's Mansion
Kid Icarus
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
Ocarina of Time
Resident Evil: Revelations
Paper Mario
Pilotwings (If you can get it for a good price. I like it a lot but it's probably not worth the same price as some other games you could get.)

Haven't got Fire Emblem yet but everyone says it's brilliant. Also Donkey Kong Country Returns is recently out, so if you haven't played the Wii version or want the extra levels then you might want that.

There's other obvious ones like NSMB2, Mario Kart, Kingdom Hearts etc but I haven't got them yet so I wont recommend them.

If you want eShop game recommendations too, then;

Mutant Mudds
Might Switch Force
HarmoKnight
Gunman Clive
Pullblox

There are some other lower tier games I like and would recommend but I'll just stick with the big ones for now.

Cheers all, damn - looks like i'm gonna need to buy a few then!! I like the look of Luigi's mansion and loved Ocarina of Time on the N64 back in the day, so would be cool to have that again!

It turns out that I'm eligible to give a free download code for Monster Hunter 3 to anyone I know as long as they've registered their 3DS or 3DS XL to Nintendo Club after June 3. Heardy, you're eligible for that so contact me. If anyone else has registered their console in the last week, contact me. I'll only have one code and it'll go to the one that PMs me first. Obviously I don't want anything for it, it's free.

I think I'm going to move away from physical copies on 3DS for a while. There is no Nintendo distributor in Poland so it's impossible to get them in Krakow, I'd be ordering from Amazon but digital copies are the same price and with games like Donkey Kong and Animal Crossing I won't want to sell them ever anyway because they offer so much replay value long term. Besides, not having to carry cartridges around with me seems tempting too.

Damn girl, you crazy.
Why? I prefer them but it's impossible to buy them in Poland, and Amazon usually takes 3-5 days to deliver which is ages with highly anticipated games. I already have two titles on my 3DS XL, Lego City and Fire Emblem which was a free download, and I kind of like it. I'd prefer to have all games in retail physical copies but it's damn impossible with their distribution model.

Nah I understand some people prefer it or find it easier, I Just personally can't imagine doing away with physical copies. In fact it makes me sad to think about a time when I can't buy them

I couldn't either, I love boxes and stuff but I can't just go to store and pick them up here. Ordering online takes away a lot of the fun for me.

I won't make my decision yet though. I'm probably going to order Donkey Kong now and see how long it takes Amazon to deliver. Last time I ordered RE6 and Dishonored there on Sunday they were delivered on Tuesday!

Anyone played Dead Nation? Looks like a decent little game, top down zombie shooter. Could be worth it for the vita.

Nintendo still has some issues with not linking games to the account but tying it into the actual console itself. So if you ever lose your console, all your games will be gone and you'll need to buy them all over again. That's really turning me off from buying games digitally from Nintendo.

Yeah, I know and it's a bitch since I have both the classic small white one and the XL, I'll only be able to play digital games on the XL because that's where I'd rather download them.

I think I'm at the final boss in Persona, the big fecking ugly eye. At level 65 I'm not going to get any luck though so I need to level up to 80-85 and come back to the fecker and beat the shit out of him.

Meanwhile Sony haven't announced much for Vita lately. Jak & Daxter remake is coming out this week, Killzone in September, Tearaway in December and God of War 1 & 2 remakes at some point later this year but that's about it. Nintendo are really killing it with all the 3DS announcements.

I've just bought a Vita, are you proud Weaste?

What are the best games for it? Persona 4?

Persona 4, Gravity Rush, Uncharted, FIFA (doesn't matter which, they are the same), Sly Cooper, LittleBigPlanet.

I got the 3G model for £169.99 and it came free with LBP and a 4GB memory card. Will that be enough or will I have to upgrade?

Thanks, I'll have a look at those.

You have to upgrade. Get a 16 GB unless you're planning on keeping games, then get a 32 GB. I have a 16 GB which allows me to store about 7-8 games, it's enough for me because once I finish them I don't need to keep them and I can re-download at any point in the future anyway.

I forgot to mention - don't buy anything yet, just get a PS+ subscription that is €15 for 3 months and this month you'll get free Rayman Origins, and for the next few months you can also download Gravity Rush and Uncharted for free as well. Once you download them they are yours as long as you have your PS+ subscription active (it's €5 a month as I've said but you pay for 3 months or a year in advance). You can also re-download them at any point in the future. As far as I remember you also have a PS3 so you'll be able to download free games for it too (this month there's Amalur, ICO and Shadow of Colossus and they have just uploaded LittleBigPlanet Karting, XCOM and Uncharted 3 which will be available for a full year). It's amazing value, basically you'll have 2 games from the list I posted above for nothing as well as a very good Rayman game.

Cheers mate.

Ye 4GB doesn't seem like its going to be anywhere near enough. What's with the ridiculous prices of the memory cards? You have to use an official Sony one don't you?

Ye I'm already a PSPlus member, great value as you say. Rayman Origins is a great little game

The 3g model is pointless, I have yet to use 3g on mine, and I have had it since launch

Ye I doubt I'll use it and I've switched it off, it was just cheaper than the Wifi only model.

If the DL version of Ico and Shadow Of The Collosus work the same as the HD collection on the disc, they have cross play on them and could be played on Vita as well

Where did you get it from?

I've just about got my Vita for two weeks, already filled a 16gb card, including deleting a game. Need to find myself a 32gb asap. Seen some on eBay and Amazon, but I dunno if I trust the sellers.

Also, Motorstorm Arctic Edge is absolutely boss, and looks fantastic for a PSP game, at 3 euros(PS+) it's a total steal. Feels exactly like the console series.
