Gaming Nintendo 3DS vs PS Vita thread.

Decided to get the new 3DS XL.

Was initially going to get a Vita, but it seems to be going nowhere.

So apart from the new mario game what would be the best 2-3 games on the system?

Also I noticed on a few sites that no AC adapter comes with it? That's a bit scabby. Can anyone confirm this is the case.

I'm considering one too. I'd personally get Starfox for nostalgia and Ocarina Of Time because I didn't play it on the N64

Starfox and Zelda are top notch
The game that has brought me the most joy by far however is Mario Kart 7
If you buy one game for the 3DS get Mario Kart

RE: Randall
The adapter came with mine

Zelda will be a must buy.

Which star fox is it? Is it now enhanced and in 3D too?

Also looking at the virtual console feature. Are these games enhanced graphics etc?

Starfox 64 - 3D and optional gyro controls are the only real addons from the original
Cave Story is a must download or pay 4x as much for the 3DS version

Super Mario 3D Land (Assuming that by new Mario game you mean New Super Mario Bros 2 and not this)
Resident Evil: Revelations
Kid Icarus Uprising
Mario Kart 7

Also, on the eShop check out Mutand Mudds, Pullblox, Mighty Switch Force. There are also lots of games available on DSiWare, but I wont go into those as well at the moment.

The XL doesn't come with an AC adapter in Japan or Europe, unfortunately.

Star Fox 3D is similar to the original on the N64, but with updated graphics, motion controls and in 3D. Comparison;

Some of the Virtual Console games are enhanced, but most of them aren't at the moment. Some are released as "3D Classics", and have slightly updated visuals, like backgrounds, colours etc, and are in 3D. EG: Kid Icarus on the NES vs Kid Icarus 3D Classics;

OK, so I pre booked the XL from gamestop today.

Also ordered 4 games off amazon; Marioland 3D, Mario Kart 7, Starfox and Ocarina of Time.

Olly, do you know if you can save your game in starfox? Always remember that was a real negative about the one from the N64.

How much did that set you back?

A few quid. Console was €220 and the games came to 110 sterling. The games were far cheaper on amazon than in the shops.

What way does it go then?

Errrm. Do you want a technical explanation?

What you said is the general consensus that that has been formed through gamers as a whole. It is based on feature sets of the GPU (PS2 didn't really have a GPU as such). PS3 can do a lot more than RSX is capable of for example. Most graphics engine programmers would actually like to get rid of the GPU and go back to pure software renderers where they can introduce different techniques not supported by the modern GPU rasterizer in hardware.

What's going on With Sony, Weaste?

They appear to be a troubled company.

A lot of their latest ideas have failed to live up to expectations, kinect destroyed move and Vita seems to be very disappointing.

MS, also seem to have far more ideas on the horizon ( they don't appeal to me, but they will to many) but Sony seems to be stuck in a rut?

Also things like getting DLC's months later is becoming tiresome.

Sony just purchased Gaikai, I expect cloud gaming to feature heavily on the ps4, their phones and possibly even tv's and Vita.

Sony didn't push move as much as Microsoft pushed Kinect? That was never the point? It's supplemental rather that a core strategy? Naughty Dog for example never used it and The Last of Us will not use it?

Vita is expensive, they will not lower the price? They go for the longer term? If anything, it's only really Sony that cares about the core gamer anymore. Nintendo has completely lost that and Microsoft are going in that direction. Rare for example, the once great game studio is now a Kinect farm.

I dont know if this is the thread for this, but there isnt one for it specifically and I dont know how popular the game is. But has anyone played Gravity Rush on PS Vita? I just got it today, have played a few levels up to where you get your house decorated and can save it, but its really good so far. I like the artstyle and the concept, and the combat is a simple idea, but challenging all the same.

Why would Vita be disappointing? Have you tried one or are you talking about sales?
Games wise 3ds doesn't really have anything over Vita other than the Nintendo stuff. If you can't live without Mario then that's another question. Personally I don't really care about pokemon, zelda and the like.

It's a cracking game.

I got bored of Rayman and FIFA on my Vita, so got Virtua Tennis 4 for 15 quid off Shopto.

Nice little game tbh. May have to get the MGS collection this week too.

That's not true, you are talking feature set there. It's as daft as saying a DX11 Wii U > PS3 which has a DX9 GPU.

Wrong. The GCN is in the middle power wise and actually closer to the XBOX than the PS2.

Unless you are talking theoretical numbers? In which case the PS2 talked a good game. Much like the PS3.

Sony actually created the casual gamer market, they also set the standard for easier and shorter games.

Core gamers? Give me a break. Sony started the whole dumbing down of console games we have now.

I think the problem with Vita is what I predicted from the start...It's basically full of games you already own, just slightly lower quality.

Sure you can say that about the latest Mario/Zelda/Pokemon games, but at least they pretend to be new versions with some cool additions, plus they have history and soul.

Vita is a powerhouse and a great piece of kit, but it's a dumping ground for PS2/PS3 games that simply won't/don't pass the test of time. If they actually pushed it to be new and innovative, then I have no doubt it could have blown the 3DS out of the water.

That's bollocks! But not too surprising coming from a guy that has always sat behind an API.

So what if it did? It never became the focus of it!

Not at that entry price, and blowing Nintendo out of the water is not possible due to the popularity of the Nintendo trademark games. It depends what you want at the end of the day. Again it goes back to the core gamer, some people want a handheld with a full experience.

 If I was fully focused on this stuff right now, I'd have surely fallen for that and bitten, but well played sir ;)

But you know full well that to get the PS2 to push the polygons and texture fill rates alone of the GCN would take time, effort and money. Things that the people that pay the bills have no interest in, unless you are first party.

So as things stood, as a developer, the order stood as Xbox-GCN-PS2 and I have code and probably still the videos of dancing monkeys to prove that.

So what if it did? It never became the focus of it!

Err, the focus in the PSX/PS2 days were full of that. I think you are getting confused with the dancing/singing crap of today.

Sony wanted games easier, shorter and full of marketing gimmicks to appeal to casual/family gamers and create a new market. They succeeded.

Care to explain?

Picked it up today. It's a nifty piece of kit, although my kid has nicked it off me and I've barely got a look in.

Mario 3d land is outstanding.

Street fighter 4. Very impressive version, might I add. What console are the graphics comparable to?

Looks to be better than Ps2 / Xbox 1 but not as good as current?

Something to do with effects on 3D objects, I think. But don't let my great knowledge fool you, as I said I'm only going by what I've seen others say.

Ace Attorney 5 has been revealed and Professor Layton Vs. Ace Attorney has been dated;

This week's Famitsu is a must for Ace Attorney fans. The magazine has looks at two Ace Attorney games: Ace Attorney 5 and Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney.

For Ace Attorney 5, the magazine says that Phoenix Wright is the main character. He has a new partner, a mysterious girl in yellow clothing. This girl will be a central figure in the game .

Layton vs Ace Attorney got a major ad on the magazine's back cover. The ad itself is a puzzle which Tales Source, which picked up the magazine in advance, says appears to indicate a November 29 release date for the game

Did anyone else pick up New Super Mario Bros. 2?

It obviously has that 'same old' feeling, but anyone who hasn't played the DS or Wii version of 'New Super Mario Bros.' will find this amazing I'd imagine. I still love it, but due to having played all of the others it's not got as much impact on me.

There's a fair amount to keep you busy with though -- although the 3D effect is a bit wasted, as the backgrounds get too blurry. You need to play it with the 3D Slider less than half the way up, but I rarely have it on full whack anyway to save power.

Not yet, saving money on current gen games to buy retro stuff for a while :p
