Gaming Nintendo 3DS vs PS Vita thread.

-3DS XL announced - 90% bigger screens, better battery, 4gb SD card included. Three colours released in Europe next month.
-Super Smash Bros 4 development in collaboration with Namco Bandai.
-Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask coming in October (woop!)
-Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem coming early 2013.
-Inazuma Eleven Strikers coming in September.
-Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance demo available now.

There was quite a bit of other details but that's all I can remember at the moment.

EDIT2:

If they added a second, some developers would support it by default, and anyone without an XL (or circle pad pro) wouldn't be able to play the game.

And they still haven't added the second analogue? WTF!

I agree, seems like a strange move to not include it. Also Nintendo always seems to do this thing of releasing a handheld and then remodelling it, maybe making it bigger and re releasing. Would it really be that difficult to launch both together? I can't imagine it being able to really give sales a boost as it is essentially the same hardware.

I suppose its a design flaw not to include it. To release a "new" handheld and not fix a flaw that has already.been recognised with the introduction of an accessory to fix the flaw.

But even if they added a second circle pad, an addon would still be needed because the circle pad pro added extra shoulder buttons.

Adding all that is too much of a change for something that isn't a new handheld, it's just an extension on the 3DS line.

Couldn't they just add the shoulder buttons too. It wouldnt change the design too much but would negate the need for having to buy an add on and as a consequence increase the size of the handheld even further.

I think including a Vita with the XL would have definitely been too much :p

Well, for me as I said adding an extra circle pad would have been too much so I don't know about shoulder buttons too :p But besides that, I don't know, the circle pad pro shoulder buttons make it quite thick;

Of course they could make them thinner, like the normal 3DS ones, but even they would make it almost twice as thick.

I'm just sick to the back teeth with Nintendo releasing shitty hardware and charging through the nose for it... Like Apple!

I thought they made a loss on the 3DS now that they dropped the price. Admittedly they did initially charge over the odds for it!

They didn't originally plan to sell it for the price that they did when it first came out. They raised it due to positive reactions at E3, and then of course the price drop came and they started making a loss on each one. In September they'll start making a profit on each one.

Is it shit hardware? It doesn't have vitas horsepower but it is capable of cool things at a cheaper price.

To me hardware is merely a portal to the software available. The software library is what makes or breaks a console or handheld

Will it be pointles for me to play Kingdom Hearts: Drop Distance when I haven't played any of the previous installments in series?

I wondered that, too, but just figured I'd give the demo a go and see how it goes.

Oh, and I know this is DS and not 3DS, but;

Pokemon Black and White 2 first two day sales ~1.619m - http://www.famitsu.com/news/201206/26016963.html

It seems like it's still got it :p

I can't wait for Black & White 2, the amount of extra content they've squeezed in is amazing when compared with Black & White. I'm expecting to have to wait until around late September / October to get them released in the UK, though.

As for the second circle pad, while I can see all the reasons for them not including it (such as: not making consumers feel they needed to purchase this and not wanting to change the design etc) I still think they should have. Games don't have to use it and games never will have to use the second circle pad, but for more experienced gamers who like higher quality camera control, it's a very big deal IMO.

Hopefully if we see games like Monster Hunter released, the auto-camera with the L trigger is up to the standard of the Wii version. It'll be a little bit more difficult to play, but hopefully not too awkward.

I don't care about it being as powerful as Vita, that's not the point. Horsepower (I was talking about analogue controls by the way) however does allow you to do things with gameplay that cannot be done with lesser power. Nintendo have been releasing shitty hardware since the GameCube, and Wii was the pinnacle of it (the fecking thing is now as a design over 15 years old).

First 3DS XL impressions and video...

Hands On 3DS XL - Vimeo

- the screen looks good, very good
- while the image looked worse on a DSiXL than on a DSi, it's not the case here. 3DSXL pixels look as defined as on 3DS.
- the screen seems very luminous
- 3D effect is more comfortable and more immediate
- the analog stick is more convenient to use, no need to bend your thumb anymore
http://www.bamarenlive.com/2012/06/test-nintendo-3ds-xl.html

* Huge screen
* Better viewing angle
* 3D effect looks better/more effective/more natural
* 2D mode looks better than regular 3DS
* Image looks better/softer (they assume there might be some filter but not sure)
* The grip (round corners) fit nicely
* Unit fits better in hands (they wonder if it should've been the main design in first place)
* Unit is lighter than they expected
* There's a coat in the unit (not fully matte) that gives it a "deluxe plastic imitating metal" look
* Not sure at the sound as the room was quite noisy

Summary of points from Neogaf.

Might be tempted now, I hated how 3D looked on the original models.

Still not entirely sold by the games library though.

Have to say I am pretty gutted with the lack of decent things happening with the PS Vita. I love it.... Just seems that no one likes making things for it.

Sadly, I get the feeling this will always be the case for other handheld devices. It's going to take more major mistakes from Nintendo and some big breakthroughs for anyone to get close to what Nintendo can do. Most of this is down to the first-party Nintendo games obviously, but also the fact that people have grown up with Gameboys and buying the Nintendo handheld just always felt 'right'.

Sony's handheld strategy simply does not work. I don't know what they're trying to do. It seems that a lot of the time the games that get released are ports of home console games. They're teching it out with everything they can, but people are just going to use their iPod / Phone / tablet etc for the features they've added. Most people I know only bought a PSP late in its life because it was easy to kit it out. Turn it into an emulator for PS1 and yeah, you guessed it, Nintendo games.

They should probably give up and focus on their home consoles, but even now they're not in the position they were with the PS1 and PS2.

As for Nintendo releasing shitty hardware, that is probably true for the Wii. But it obviously worked for them when they can ship over 30million more units than their competitors whose consoles were vastly more powerful. What did using raw power really teach Nintendo? The N64 pretty much failed, as did the Gamecube. Both of these consoles were battered by the Sony competitor, but it wasn't until Nintendo did something different with less power that they were back in (and winning) the game. Now the 3DS will thrash the Vita, potentially due to it again, offering something different while not being as powerful.

Let's see what happens with the next generation of consoles and whether it'll ever be all about horsepower (I for one think the N64 and Gamecube have a massive library of top quality games, so it wasn't software that hurt these consoles, that's for sure).

I'm very happy with my Vita. Not sure what people are on about, it has more games than the 3ds had same time last year. When you include the psp titles that I personally never played, it's got quite the library already.

The screen is amazing, it has the horsepower to stay relative much longer than the 3ds and I'm pretty sure games like Assassin's Creed (open world game on a handheld!) and CoD are coming, and they're not ports.
Most people that are moaning about the lack of games clearly don't have a clue about game development. You can't just crap out games in one month, the process is quite long and complicated. FFS, the Vita came out last Christmas in Japan and March everywhere else. Give it time.

Don't get me wrong, there will always be people who are happy with what they've got. I was over the moon with my Gamecube, but the majority were not. It's just that the people happy with these things are pretty much a super minority when it comes to gaming as a whole.

Also, potential longevity of the hardware itself in Vita's case doesn't mean much these days (IMO). I'd wager that it's still being outsold by the original Nintendo DS models, not just selling one Vita for every 10 3DS.

It seems Sony know the mistake(s) that they made with the PSP, but intend to do the same thing with the Vita;

Koller himself says that Sony's approach with PSP had a flaw in that they initially tried to sell gamers PSP games that were too similar to console games. "Ports tended to be very difficult to message," he said. "Consumers go, 'I've got it on console. Why do I need it on this and spend $40 on this and spend $40 for exactly what I have on console? That doesn't make any sense.' I think that's a very relevant position."
"Let there be no mistake," he said. "This is console gaming on the go. And that's what almost every consumer has said when they come in: I need to see a game that to me makes me feel as if this is a console game on the go. And that is really how it will be sold as we go forward."

Just like the PSP/DS...

So what? Sony's target audience is different from nintendo's. It may be smaller in market figures but it's still relevant.

I don't care who outsold who, that sort of bullshit belongs to neogaf. For me the DS didn't have anything worth my time and money, and the same goes for the 3DS.

I'm not really quite sure what you're getting at? I basically said each to their own with my comments on your Vita experience and my Gamecube experience.

But if you didn't care about who outsold who, why bring up the point of staying relative? That's obviously going to mean feck all if they can't shift the systems, because no one will be making games for it no matter how much horsepower it has. Sure, Sony's target audience may be smaller, but I'm sure their ambition is to match or better Nintendo, not settle for less. Which market do you think is stronger? Hardcore gamers or casual gamers? I'd still sway towards the hardcore despite what Nintendo have managed in recent times. So maybe Sony's target audience should still be bigger?

This is all just my opinion, but if you're settling for what the Vita is doing, then you are settling for less in comparison with what Nintendo have done and you always will be until Sony can sell more units and produce better games (even developers admit that consumers aren't happy with the ports they churn out). But again, I'd like to point out this isn't a bad thing and it is obviously down to which kind of games you prefer. If you prefer what Sony is doing, then great. They obviously need more people to think like this and give them a chance. It's just that the fact must be that they are doing some things wrong, otherwise the Vita would be doing better than it is. It's just that simple at the end of the day.

It was more aimed at Olly and the PSP/DS remark.
Staying relative in terms of hardware capability is what I meant.

I know what 3ds has and I'm not settling for less, it's just a matter of opinion as you said.
If there wasn't a Ps vita, I wouldn't have bought a handheld in the first place. It's good there's an alternative and it's good that Sony continue to push the hardware even if it's not the ideal business model.
Unlike the doom mongers I'm actually not worried about vita "dying", Sony have enough developers that will support the system even if the 3rd party disappear.
Not to mention that western 3rd party studios don't really care much about handhelds anyway, so 3DS is in the same boat as Vita, believe it or not.

Still, assuming it won't be a disaster, I'd say Ps vita is ahead by having an Assassin's Creed game :) Short term prospects looking good.

Edit:
I have to say though, Vita's apps are awful.
Amazingly bad browser for such a powerful device. Half-arsed Skype...and that's basically it.
Can't understand why.. what's so hard to port some android stuff?

Sony - very good and ridiculously bad often at the same time. No wonder they're a mess.

Aye, I'm not worried about it "dying" i'm just kinda annoyed more hasn't happened thus far. Would have at least expected one 'must-have' title since it's launch, but it does look like some are coming out. Wait and see

Be nice if the PS Store was updated with some worth whiles too.
