Gaming Nintendo 3DS vs PS Vita thread.

PS3 is a totally different package now than it was when released in terms of its OS. Just because certain people get uperty about having to install an update now and then instead of simply starting it and making a cup of tea always baffles me.

So Sony manage to entice you into paying out a small fortune for their latest piece of plastic, you get all excited and rush home hoping to play a watered down version of a game you already own.

With great haste you rip the box open, rip the machine out, chuck the game in and switch it on...

...then you have to wait an hour or so because they couldn't even get it working right from the off?

Cheers Fony!

All right, after two hours it finally started. First impressions:

FIFA looks good but it's closer to iOS version than a PS3 one. It's a bit dumbed down to be able to run on Vita, graphics are fine but nothing spectacular, gameplay is fine. On the go it's enough

Uncharted looks far worse than on screenshots, it's actually pretty average graphics wise. Gameplay is fantastic though and some scenes are beautiful.

Wipeout is the best graphics wise but has trouble with framerate. I will get used to it, and it's a fantastic game.

Rayman Origins looks cute but I don't particularly like the game so far. Hope it will grow on me.

Navigating the whole system is easy, the screen is great, the battery is terrible - down after 3.5 hours and I have to re-charge it now. It collects dust like crazy so I am now off to store to buy travel kit with a case.

You're going on my ignore list, you troll!

Exactly. I wanted to boot it up straight after exiting the store but realised I couldn't because I needed to go through a million set ups. I played 3DS in a bus on my way back from the store.

The whole idea isn't bad though, for someone who's away a lot a portable PS3 is a good idea. Now they need to create a good game library for it - with COD and Assassins Creed to come later this year as well as LBP and Resistance, hopefully a Rockstar title as well, it's bound to do well.

It's just not a handheld as we like it.

Well I think there's a clear difference between a 'handheld' and 'portable console' - the former will appeal to a broad audience whereas the latter is a bit of a niche market. I still think the VITA will do very well, but its still won't come close to toppling Nintendo, even with the 3DS's edgy debut.

As for games, well I don't exactly see the appeal of playing games like COD and AC on a 5 inch screen with awkward controls (I have a 60 inch home gaming setup to satisfy those endearments). But that's just me.

Vita is good though. It has a great launch line-up so should sell well, there were a dozen people in the store with me at a launch although I was the first one to the registers. Even though it offers absolutely nothing fresh compared to PS3 I love it as I travel a lot so a portable dumbed down PS3 will be very useful.

Good, I'm glad you are happy with it! Despite what the old man thinks (invisible wave for Weastey!) A new machine to play video games on is always cause for joy and celebration!

I'm sure I will get one eventually, but I never buy these things from the off nowadays.

Got it.

First impression - why do I have to perform multiple system updates, go through a million manuals to play a game? It's been an hour and I still cannot play fecking FIFA. 3DS booted up in a minute and played games straightaway.

Thats why Nintendo always seem to be come out on top, unlike Sony, they tend to grasp the concept of a 'handheld', Sony need to realise that a watered down PS3 with poor battery life isnt most people's idea of 'pick up and play'.

Oh, and in before inevitable Weaste shitstorm.

It was much cheaper than I though it would be and cost me £180 brand new, then another £120 for four games and a memory card, though I still have to spend £20 on a travel kit because I will destroy it in a week without it.

The problem I have though, is if I wait a year or so (like with the 3DS), I'll no doubt have to download thousands of updates to try and patch their crappy os! It might take another year to actually play it :(

Still everytime I walk past a game store, I'm going to always be extremely tempted...

I have never played the psp or vita so I can't comment on how they compare but I just upgraded from the dsi to 3ds and I love it
The 3D is a bit of a gimmick in that its a bit hard on the eyes to use the whole time but it really looks good in games like zelda oot and nano assualt
I like the new stylus but I like even more that most of the new games aren't trying to force the stylus on you except for the few games that the stylus makes sense like plants vs zombies
One of the thing I really enjoyed about zelda oot was you didn't have to aim your gadgets with the analog stick but could simply move the 3ds to aim which made it very easy (I can see why they are changing the controllers for the new wii to be more like the 3ds)
I like the mii street pass function as it encourages kids to go out for a walk and be rewarded for it
There is an app that records all your steps and games played and presents them in a graph which has helped me to know how many hours I am getting out of each game (which is important to me because I mostly play at work to kill time and want to get the most out of each game I buy)
Overall I am really happy with it and highly suggest anyone with a ds or dsi make the upgrade
I would also suggest maybe waiting a bit as it seems that the 3ds might be getting upgraded with 2 analogs sticks built in (my biggest gripe would be that it wasn't included originally and now I will probably have to buy the add on that is rumored to require aaa batteries)

Yeah it requires one AAA battery which apparently lasts for 480 hours.

It's good now that there's quite a few people with 3DSes here, there never seemed to be any DS (or any handhelds in general) talk here before.

All right, been playing Uncharted for the last half an hour and it looks very impressive. Great graphics, somehow the beginning was the worst.

Whole day of Vita and I am very impressed. Uncharted looks brilliant and has a great storyline and scenery, as per usual. Hope it's a bit longer than usual 8 hours.

FIFA isn't as good as 12 but it's basically the same as 11 on PS3. I don't know why I complained about graphics before, they're completely fine when I compared them to PS3, I didn't think it looked like that and I played hundreds of hours of it on PS3.

Wipeout is great and I have finally grasped handling so it's very enjoyable. It lacks game modes, for me at least, but is a great game nevertheless.

Rayman I still don't like.

:lol:Obvious troll, troll is obvious!

If you think that was an obvious troll, you aren't very good at troll spotting. I offended Weaste enough yesterday, I'm taking a break so I don't give him a heart attack ;)

The question still stands. I naturally assumed it would have at least a small space for save games built in, obviously not. Interesting.

In that case, no there's no built in memory, as far as I'm aware.

As far as I know, the game carts have space on them for game saves and for game patches. Don't know how VITA works with PS+.

Thanks. It's something I should of known, but just assumed there'd be at least a gig or so in there somewhere, since it's dirt cheap.

I suppose it all adds up though, and in this climate they were trying to keep the costs as minimal as they could.

I am buying games, no point downloading them as they cost more on PS Store than in physical stores. Got FIFA for 169 PLN, Uncharted for 159 PLN, Wipeout for 159 PLN and Rayman for 139 PLN. In online store they are 199 PLN, 179 PLN, 159 PLN and 149 PLN respectively.

Uncharted does require a memory card, it won't work without one.

I want a Vita :(

Dunno if I can justify 200 quid though, plus 44 quid per game. :(

How is that highlighted on the box?

A small icon of a memory card and a sign "this game requires a memory card". It says the same on Wipeout and Rayman, I just noticed. Only FIFA doesn't have it.
