Nigel De Jong

Yeah he obviously does a little more than that. But, he is a limited player and is already 30. Decent player but, we should be aiming much higher.

Limited in what? He has a role that he executes perfectly, and he has never been a liability to anyone, he is a decent passer, he has a very good positional sense, he anticipates well.

Every big team needs some grafters and he is one of them. This type of "limited" players allow players like Di Maria, Blind, Herrera, Mata, Januzaj to have a lot of freedom without worrying about there defensive tasks.

If you ask me, looking at our team, I would take Luiz Gustavo, Javi Martinez, Mascherano, De Jong or Schneiderlin over any other midfielders.

De Jong is not as good as any of those players mentioned. Plus we already have some grafters in our squad.

Not this again, he's been in the retirement home for 3 years, he'll be 31 later this year, he was never that good to begin with and has been nothing special in Italy. There are so many far superior options to him out there and I am not just talking about the fancy names, if we want a player who can harass and do the dirty work there are players like Allan and McCarthy who are a lot younger and can do everything he does with added qualities of their own.

Blind, Valencia, Young, Fellaini, Rooney

Rooney is supposed to score goal for us, we can't use him as grafter, Blind isn't one, Fellaini is a bad one because inconstant in this part of his game, Valencia and Young are wide players. In the middle of the pitch we do not have one "Fletcher" or "Hargreaves" or "Makelele" or "Matuidi".

Herrera is probably the only grafter, but he isn't enough. They should all graft tbh.

I do not think we need that type. Plus Matiuidi does not really fit in that group you listed.

Yes, he is not enough and he is better in the final third.

Matuidi is not what we need but he is still one of those players who are better off the ball, players who do the dirty work for less limited players.
Blind, Herrera, Fellaini, Di Maria, Mata and Carrick are all at their best when they have the ball and they are almost all more productive in the final third.
Matuid is different because he is a pressing machine but he has no positional sense.

Well you always need a water carrier in the midfield. If he can do that job, just wonder if there is a younger option out there.

Apparently their is Ruben Neves for the future, maybe Kramer(haven't seen him much), but for now Schneiderlin, Wanyama, Mario Suarez, Saul, luiz Gustavo, McCarthy.

Who is Real's water carrier? Barca's?

In defense Madrid's midfield is laughable, and they have Ronaldo who scores at every opportunity. Barcelona they have Busquets who plays several roles by himself but there is only one Busquets.

Always been a fan of him, even if he isn't a first team member he'd be great to have around in the squad.

Fwiw the Daily Mail are saying that Carrick is about to sign a one year extension.

He's a good player. He'd be a handy option to have in your squad and he's better than what you currently have.

He'd be the only player of his type we'd possess, and an important cog to the machine but I don't think he's a better midfielder than any of Herrera, Blind, Carrick or di Maria though.

Better than what you have. Blind will only improve

He is better than Lucas, I agree. I also think he is a better player than Blind and if you were to use Fellaini in that position, he'd be better than him too. De Jong is a very good player.

Forgot about Carrick. Would rather have Carrick than De Jong, but Carrick is a few years older so it might be a smart replacement (granted they have different styles).

He is now but Blind will improve all the time.

Good player but he's 30 now. May aswell keep Carrick who can still do a job, Fellaini for his versatility and buy a younger alternative.

De Jong would be a great signing, I was pushing for him all summer. His ability in that DM role would allow us to include more attack-minded midfielders, i.e. we would have The Balance.

Always wondered why City got rid of him, only to splash out 30m on a player (Fernandinho) a few years later who wasn't ostensibly better. Strange decision.

Because when they started playing more expansive Football they did not have much use for him. And Fernadinho is a much more complete midfielder than De Jong.

I think he left City over a wage dispute. He's a lot better then Javi Garcia and Fernando, who they have currently. The issue is he's 30 and picks up a fair share of injuries.

We don't need any more squad men. We need assassins.

No kung fu jokes, please.

if the manager want to spend 60 million on two midfielders then pogba and de jong would be a great option.

i'll take that over spending 30 million each on strootman and any other midfielder we've been linked.

Bears repeating, most likely and hopefully bullshit, just lazy journalism because our manager is Dutch, if LvG just wanted a CM to rough people up in midfield he'd play Fellaini there. We are re-signing Carrick for a year and we have Blind, we don't need a 3rd DM, especially a has-been thug.

Hope he's not the midfielder that Van Gaal feels will bring us 'balance', otherwise I'd be very disappointed.

I have to believe LvG would have zero interest in a 31 years old well past his best, plus he doesn't fit any of the balance comments he has made, he plays the same role as Blind and Carrick, he just kicks people more but it's the same game.
