Nigel De Jong

De Jong would be a fantastic short to medium term fix.

Even if the plan is to get someone more glamourous in 6-12 months time he'd still be a great option to have.
Remember going down to 10 men against real or munich.
How nice it would have been to have been to be able to throw him in and make life more difficult for them.

De Jong won't provide any silky through balls and things like that but he's very good at what he does, covering the 2 CBs and he would be perfect sitting in behind Herrera and Mata who both love to push forward.

So most people would be at least content with him.. I wonder if we're actually close to signing him.

is going to be a decent signing. if van gaal is going to play a 3 man midfield which he usually prefers and most likely to happen next season, i agree that short term de jong is probably one of the best possible option that we've got.

I don't think it's beyond possibility that we'd bring in another midfielder even if we signed De Jong, particularly given Carrick's injury.

For example, Herrera, De Jong + 1 more to replace Giggs, Anderson + 1 more, means we'd just be operating with the same midfield numbers as last season and can use Jones in his proper defensive role.

Van Gaal did seem concerned by the absence of Carrick. It wouldn't surprise me if he now does turn to De Jong.

It certainly wouldn't be overkill. As is only Carrick and Herrera are really good enough to start for us. The rest of our midfielders have serious question marks over either their fitness, general quality or both. Any and all of them could justifiably be sold. On top of that, Carrick himself could well be in decline anyway.

Well I would assume that it would be De Jong + 1. I would be happy with that. He would be a very solid squad player to have and better than pretty much everything we currently have.

Would be a decent signing, particularly with Carrick injured. But we would still need to bring in that real quality to our midfield, De Jong and Vidal would be great

City cast-offs now, jeez.

A player City should have kept as they never adequately replaced. As far as I know, City fans didn't want him to go and he left for more game-time. 'Cast off' isn't really apt.

He was an unsung hero at City from what I remember. People may not like it but a player like this is essential, someone to do the footwork while our more creative players have freedom.

Would be delighted with de Jong and Vermaelen as the last two signings of the window.

Seriously Kevin? Vermaelen is a complete crock and is arsenal's 3rd choice centre half.

That really is way below the quality we need to get this squad back to where it should be.

There is no solid source, unfortunately. Only an osbcure journal called Sport (not the spanish one)

De Jong left because he wasn't a regular starter. It was best for him and the club that he moved on because he is a very good player, just not what City required anymore. We haven't replaced him because we haven't needed a similar style of player but Fernandinho is a definite upgrade in his position. United would do well to sign him, it would hurt if you did though, in more ways than one. Couldn't begrudge him signing however.

I dont know, he did ok for a bit, like v Palace, Fulham etc... I would still stick with him, he isn't as bad as he's made out to be.
He's not a bad player. He can be very effective when played in an advanced position but there's no place for him in our squad. He suits a team that play unattractive football where he can be a nuisance in and around the box. He actually tore us apart one year in that position when Everton won 1-0. But when it comes to breaking up play and passing from deeper positions, he's almost useless. Poor passing range, no mobility, ends up chasing shadows.

Not sure why people are so eager to sign him, don't remember him being that "great" for Man City..How is he getting on at Ac Milan?

He's obviously not my first choice, but if that fee is correct he'd be a good option to have in the squad and probably an upgrade on Carrick who seems to be digressing. Even if we got him we'd still need another midfielder though.

He was very good at City. They missed him in the 2012/13 season. Speak to City fans, they knew how valuable he was to them.
Fair enough, did not particularly impress me but that's just my opinion. He had a good world cup though, I'll admit that much. He's not our midfield Messiah though, still expect us to sign somebody like Strootman as well.

Perhaps he wasn't the most flashiest of players, or a person who won't run from 40yards like Yaya, he was work man like. In a title winning team, you need those type of players

Horrible thug of a player, don't want him anywhere near a United shirt, standards shouldn't drop this low.
