Just read Jamie Jackson's article, seems to indicate that if we don't get Ramos we could go with what we've got in defence, hard to believe but you wouldn't put it past LvG.
He's the muppet killer and is full of shit.

Van Gaal isn't a fool. Going with defense we have means that we'll be out of the title race before we'll start the new campaign. And Van Gaal has just another couple of years in his contract. After spending so much money, Woody will expect LVG to deliver.

For any of those interested...

Otamendi is 1/5 with SkyBet to join us. I've given up on listening to odds but it does fill a lot of us with hope :)

James Ducker says we have no interest in Otamendi in his latest article
We bid for him in Jan if Balague is to be believed so it would be strange for us to drop out interest completely. We must be put off by the £35m buyout. Hopefully it's just posturing but Ducker seemed pretty certain about it in his article.

I don't know much about Ducker but it's strange that he's being so adamant if he doesn't know anything, I mean he could have prefaced his comments with "Sources close to the club say...." to give himself wiggle room.

Well it looks like Ottamendi is definitely coming to the EPL, so it better be to f'ing United else I'm going to be mega pissed!
Given we also tried to buy him in January I find it difficult to believe we are no longer interested.

Ian Herbert was certain we are no longer interested in Morgan after signing BFS. The English journos have been absolutely clueless this season when it comes to our transfers. No amount of posturing about how confident they are about their sources/knowledge of our transfer business will change that.

That's a good read but it has never worked that way. He's established himself as one of the best around now unlike 18 months ago.

Btw, I wouldn't read much into what Ducker says. All these English journos have proved to know feck all when it comes to our business. I think it's simply a case of him trying to come across as ITK by claiming something totally opposite to common knowledge and hoping we get Ramos and thus don't go for Otamendi.

Good point about Herbert, maybe I just can't shake the feeling that Otamendi wouldn't be the ideal choice for LvG to go with what we have.

Not sure what to make of this. Don't trust the British press anyway - they know feck all as evidenced by us doing our transfer business and them having not a clue. Wouldn't panic until we know for sure...

And where was Ducker when we made our previous 4 signings? Why do we suddenly bow at his feet when he comments? A denial from "club sources" is just as much of an admittance that it's on as a confirmation is these days.

He used to know what was going on, but like all the journalists now they have lost all their sources at the club.

Delighted. So it is Ramos or nothing. Feck one season wonder Otamendi.

It could well be false information but it seems like this info has come from the same briefing as the De Gea-Ramos and Pedro. So Woody probably did say this but his motives might not be that staright forward.

I can't believe it's Ramos or nothing. I hope we do not go into the season with the sick notes that we have at the back.

If we don't sign a CB then we're a bunch of wankers

It's fairly obvious this is all straight from Woodward's briefing, no other reason the journalists would all change their tunes so quickly.

Then who do we sign, we need experience in there?

I agree, but is this guy really experienced? He's 27 and he only had one season in Spain, the rest of his career he played in Portugal, Argentina and Brazil. He also only has only 20 something caps, it's a bit of a stretch to call him experienced, imo.

I don't see how he can be considered more experienced than someone like Smalling, for example, who has been playing at a very high level for 5 years now and has learned from top class CBs like Rio and Vidic.

Not even meaning him entirely. Just that we need quality, experience and injury free. If not him and FSW won't let us have Ramos, I am at a loss as to who.

I think it's deliberate from us to claim that we're not interested, to drive the price down or keep the transfer more quiet. (or both)

I'm starting to get the nervy feeling that LvG might convert Blind to a CB instead of buying one.

Ballague said this over a month ago. Thought it was interesting.

I don't understand how that would work. Leaking that we're not interested to the public somehow leads to Valencia accepting less from us, therefore proving our interest?

If Valencia believe he is not our no1 target, it would strengthen our hand in negotiations

Ballague gave a video interview to bleacher report(of all the sites lol) of it where he explains it and says it is actually a very common tactic. Im sure you can find the video on google, just type 'ballague united otamendi bleacher report'.

Only if they want to sell, and I thought they wanted the release clause or he's staying. Unless Otamendi forces it.

How on earth could Ballague EVER be privy to that kind of thinking? Why would anyone involved reveal that to him? This is the most obviously made up piece of bullshit I've read in ages.

It might be a common tactic but I'm not sure how it works. You tell the whole world you're NOT interested in the player, then you end up having to start talking to his club, who then might just figure out you are interested....

Don't suppose there's any link between Chelsea moving for Stones and us going off Otamendi?

I know, this logic always surprises me, we are talking about people doing multi million pound deals, yet they are so gullible that they read in the Daily Mirror and from @InTheKnowCharlie641 on Twitter that United aren't interested and immediately rush to phone Ed and tell him they'll knock 10% off his buyout clause? I think not.
