He is obviously a quality defender but, it will be weird if this was our guy when it comes to acquiring a CB. With the importance LVG places on CBs being good on the ball we start the season with no CB who is a good passer from the back(ok maybe Rojo). And we would have another blood and thunder type defender(which is usually my favorite type of defender) when we already have two of those in Jones and Rojo.

This deal will be done, it's a matter of time. We have a strong relationship with Mendes and the selling club (it seems anyway) and the player is eager to join.
Not at the cost of actually being really good defensively. How many exceptional ball playing defenders are there really? Hummels, Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Pique, Ramos, J. Boateng, Dante and a few more I suppose. They are a rarity and would cost alot, especially since none of those are really available as far as I know.
John Stones is good on the ball too but we need a guy ready to lead our defense.

I suppose Valdes could be used to lower the Otamendi fee. Ive been in the Ramos camp but if we can keep De Gea and get Otamendi id be happy with that.
Wonder how much Valdes is valued at, can't be more than €5M which would cover the salary and rehab costs.
Probably a couple of million at the most.. But hopefully we can send Valdes the other side to sweeten the deal and get Otamendi..

If we pull both the signings and with our added reinforcements in the middle of the park.. I think that could very well offset the potential loss of DDG..
We could maybe survive with a second tier keeper(Romero) for a year before trying to find the long term replacement for David.

I agree he's not at all the type of defender I expected Van Gaal to go for (Hummels, Laporte). Perhaps Van Gaal's reasoning is that he does indeed want a 'blood and thunder type' defender, but he wants one who actually has an idea how to position himself on the field (unlike Jones/Rojo). Otamendi would seem to fit the bill.
