I dont see both McNair (loan) and Evans gone. If we get a decent fee for Evans, then he is probably gone. McNair will stay. Or we loan McNair out and keep Evans.

The improbable case we get Ramos and Otamendi, then they arent both here for the next season.

A tenner & a bag of footballs, would be a great deal for Evans :D

What a window it would be if we got Ramos & Otamendi. I care more about that, than the Striker situation tbh. Sick of seeing us not replacing a combo like we had with Rio / Vida, or Brucie / Pally..

CB combo's have been the bedrock for our success during Fergie's reign & Sir Matt's also. Boy do we need to get that back pronto if we want to get back to the top again!

Smalling + 1

I like Otamendi. And for some reason, I just can't see Ramos arriving.

Ideally, we'll get rid of Blackett, Evans and MacNair one way or another.

Which leaves us with Smalling, Jones and Rojo. Smalling is excellent, Rojo is shit and Jones is somewhere in between. I wouldn't mind 2 CB's. One established CB who can start with Smalling and another young-ish CB who can slot in as back up and do a good job without scaring the shit out of everyone. Not sure if we have the money though.

Valencia paid £10m for Otamendi in the first place when he was much less recognized, they will be looking at £30m definitely. I don't think £35m is outrageous, you need to look at the fee in context and in terms of supply quality defenders are not very easy to come across. Much easier to find a midfielder, playmaker or winger or even full back these days.

Good points, well made man & i'm always open to change my opinion.

There's definitely an undervalue of key players such as defenders & Goalkeepers, which is rediculous tbh.

They are so important to the team & all clubs try to get them on the cheap because we play down their importance in winning games, but secretly know they are key to winning games.

Top-end CB's available are very hard to prize away, so i'm with ya - spunk the money & get Otamendi sorted & then we're well on the way man.

At the end of the day - it's not our money, so who gives a shit. All we should care about is the players we have & we're shaping up exceptionally - we just need the center-back situation sorted & 1 or 2 Strikers!

I'd love us to get Stones, as that "young'ish" CB you mentioned, but we havent been linked with him at all. In fact - no-one has this summer, which i find baffling.

Maybe someone has a deal in place, or he's no chance of leaving & all the suitors have been told that?!

Would rather we went for Stones, potentially world class and already a decent CB who is also English and wouldn't cost that much. If we don't get anyone I won't cry, I think Smalling's world class if he keeps his high standards from last season and one of Jones/Rojo could still step up, Evans is a back up, don't see him being sold, if he and the team get confidence he can still be valuable. I wouldn't mind if we sold him though. Than we have McNair who is still risk but will have just about minutes to prove himself, Blackett should be sold..

I don't mind keeping our current set-up of CB for the reason that we can promote youngsters like TFM/Tuanzebe

Just cant see it Cross. We're definitely strengthening at CB man - it's nailed on. Whether its 1 or 2 CB's, is the question. I'm hopin it's 2 though - but only top-class & better than what we have.

No, we need a CB and we will get a CB. Smalling and Rojo are the only two defenders at the club we can rely on.

I think if it was a priority we would have signed one already. Right back, right footed winger and right footed defensive midfielder, those were the biggest holes in our squad last season and we have filled them all before our first pre-season game.

Centre back and striker are not as problematic and are being treated accordingly. Of course if Madrid contact us and say we can have Ramos, or Bayern do the same with Muller, then we will buy those players. But I don't see us as getting desperate with either position and either overpaying or buying someone just for the hell of it.

@settembrini Precisely how I feel. If LVG identified it to be a major area we need to address, it would have been done already. Unless of course there is truth in the rumours that Otamendi's arrival is delayed because of Copa America.

Not so concerned about the defense now, right back was a bigger priority. With Darmian there, hopefully our best CB can stay in the middle rather than having to cover 2 positions simultaneously.

Not to say we shouldn't invest though - think an Otamendi/Ramos would take this defense up another level and make it the best in the league.

well we haven't been linked with Schneiderlin for so long too. First one rumour from Canal+ recycled by other media than 1000pages of muppetry in Schneiderlin thread and than after some few reporsts we signed him.. With Luke Shaw we also haven't got any idea we would sign him the other day..

Woody's doing great job and by signing the two mentioned I feel we are monitoring the home league and for that reason I guess that tones is naturally on our radar. He also scored against us with great header so he could caught Van Gaal's eye.
Not sure we will go for this move this summer but would make perfect sense that we try the next one also with Kane..

Otamendi finished season in late May and then departed for Copa America, he couldn't have been done by now to be fair - well he could but it would have been difficult and it would have made no difference because he won't be available until early August anyway. If we have Ramos as our number one choice (also a possibility) then obviously it's going to take longer to negotiate with Real Madrid and convince them to let him join us.

I think CB has been one of top priorities all the time, it's just our two targets so far aren't easy to sign.

We're haggling over the fee & that Otamendi just wants to chill out & not think about football for a few weeks, imo..

Good points man & very positive too, which is always great to hear :)

So, we have asked super agent Mendes, who still owes us a big favour after the Bebe transfer, to help us get Ottamendi but Mendes is already helping Chelsea to get him....awkward!

I can't see Real Madrid supporters or the club's hierarchy settling for anyone other than De Gea in goal next season if at all possible. It would be a massive fail for them after all the hype, and De Gea's refusal so sign a new contract with us. I'm hoping Ramos wanting to join us is the spanner in their works. I wonder if LVG is a good poker player.
That, or De Gea to Madrid is a done deal already.

Exactly. I would be a bit surprised if United sold De Gea now. The closer to Premier League start, the more unlikely a sale will have to be. We don't want to start looking for quality goalkeepers on deadline day. Because no one will want to sell then.

De Gea has never said, as far as I know at least, that he doesn't want to stay here. Maybe he will sign a contract once the transfer window is shut.

Stones would be great. But he's also suffered with a few injuries.

We lack leadership and experience. Buy Otamendi or Ramos and then next year make a push for a young CB like Laporte or Stones.

I think we'll get this done once we close the chapter on Ramos, which should be very soon. I sense we're somewhat reluctant to pay the full fee though, so that might drag this on for a couple more weeks.

Reports are that he's going to go on strike in order to force the move to us.
Not sure I like that tactic from a personality point of view, so if he does arrive I won't be expecting any huge loyalty from him, but if he plays well for a few years then he'll be worth the fee.

Manchester United is a once in a lifetime opportunity that only a select few get. I would do everything in my power to get hold of that opportunity.

We've been fecked so many times by Mendes it doesn't even look funny now.

If he's coming here he'll likely finish his career with us, he's 27 and will have around 5-6 years at a good level - all of them should be with United.

I think this one is all agreed already. Probably just a case of coming back from tour and Valencia finding a replacement first. I would say he will be in our team vs Spurs.

So is Real Madrid :) Two outstanding seasons with us and we might find that he goes on strike again to get another move......... Doesn't mean I don't want him here though.

Luke Shaw was one of the most expected transfers in recent history, it came as no surprise to anyone
still it was made within two or three days and not long before it was Chelsea who was nailed to sign him rather than us.

nevertheless the point was clear I hope

Rojo did similar when we showed interest in him.

Mendes is not going to help Chelsea or us in this deal, atleast not below Otamendi's release clause. He's earning tons of money from Lim. He's more inclined to help Valencia in this situation. The best he gets from the Otamendi deal is his usual negotiating fee of 10 percent. On the other hand he's been selling players he owns full rights to Valencia since last season. There's more money to be made there.
