Absolutely mental post. He was fantastic against Madrid, and if played like that for us he'd walk into our team.

From that video he looks very much like your all or nothing defender, lots of big challanges and physicallity. We've got defenders like that. What we need is some composure at the back, a defender who can lead the defence and be a calming influence. I don't get that vibe from those clips that he's like that at all.

All three are more proven then Otamendi though, which was kind of my point. Though Varane is the only one from that list I'd want us to spend big money on.

In what way?

Varane has played more in la liga but hasnt been as good, what does that prove? That he was able to be registered in la liga before Otamendi was?

Garay failed at Madrid and hasnt proven himself at a top club or in a top league. How is a dozen europa league games more proven?

Miranda isnt even a first choice and is in his 30s

This is a strange story. Given the Mendes connection I don't believe we would make a bid that we knew would be rejected (and Mendes would know that, Lim is his business partner). The Super Deporte article just talks about an "important club" but they say they've not gone confirmation it was United. Of course it might all be semantics, we may have made an enquiry rather than an offer.

I remember him being linked with us last year while he was still with Porto. When Valencia bought him and loaned him out I assumed it was a Lim/Mendes deal rather than a Valencia one - that was before Lim actually took over the club.

At any rate he's at Valencia now, and doing a good job. No way will they sell him in January, he's far too important to their Liga form and a CL place is far too important to Valencia and Lim.

Over priced, think there are better players that could be bought for the same money.

Garay is a better player than Otamendi. He clearly was here in Portugal. Garay was excellent during all his Benfica career and is a clear starter in the argentinian national team. I've always rated Otamendi (except in his last season when he wanted to leave and wasn't motivated) but besides his Villas Boas management season, where he won the Europa League, Garay was always better. Mind you with Garay/Luisão partnership Benfica also went two times to the Europa League final. The problem is that they faced Chelsea and Sevilla and not Braga like Otamendi's Porto did.

Regarding failing at Madrid, i don't see your point. I mean we are talking about Madrid. He had few chances in that team and opted to leave. Sneijder and Robben also failed at Madrid, are they not good players? You think Garay wouldn't be able to replicate Otamendi's form at Valência? Of course he would since he is a superior player. And playing at Real Madrid isn't the same as playing at Valência. I followed both players closely when they were here in Portugal and i'd give the edge to Garay without a doubt.

If thats Otamendi at his best then I hope we stay well clear. Doesn't look like the kind of defender we need in the slightest.

Also looks pretty short for a centre back, which could lead to serious issues in the Premier League.
Maybe not the defender we need but he's good in the air. He legit 6 feet quoted in multiple sources, 6 feet isn't that tall for a centre back, just average. Players like Cahill, Falcao, Drogba etc are all around the same height or shorter and they are all prolific in the air. He's good in the air, period. Infact thats one of his strengths.

If it keeps Jonny Evans and Smalling away from our starting 11 then i hope we sign this guy. Cant have to many Argies in the squad. Infact, lets buy all of Messi's mates

We are literally throwing money everywhere. Where is sweet old tactic of negotiation?
Its found in the noughties where everyones perceptions of the cost of talent was a little more realistic.

I agree, he's not that tall but he wins his aerial battles. Drogba and Cahill are actually taller than him though, by a considerable margin.

I assume he means Tim Cahill who is prolific in the air despite being 5'10"

Wiki says Cahill is 178 cm (5 ft 10 in), Otamendi 1.83 m (6 ft 0 in) and Drogba 1.88 m (6 ft 2 in). But it doesn't matter really as long as you're good in the air. Cahill is probably better than 90% of the players taller than him. Ronaldo also consistently outjumps taller players.

Yes mate.

Always been a fan of his. If he was to sign, it would take time like any foreign signing but I think he would greatly improve our back 3,4,5 whatever it is or will be.

I rate any Argentine defender though.

In regards to the price though, we have to accept that these types of fees are going to become the norm, no point crying over them, that hats over the wall.

We need someone who is composed and basically a leader, not saying this fella is erratic but we dare lacking a leader like Vidic.

Leader like Vidic or composure like Ferdinand?

That's an extremely misleading way of describing his current situation. Him and Godín have been undisputed first choice since Simeone took over from Manzano. He started 10 out of 10 league games this season before he got injured in November. Giménez came in and impressed (which always looked likely), starting 7 league games from then on (he'd only started or even appeared in 1 league game before Miranda's injury!). Miranda has only recently returned after suffering another set-back in December when he started (and played the full 90') v Villarreal. His only appearance since then was as a starter in the CdR return at the Bernabéu, again playing the full 90'. Let's see what happens now that he has returned to full fitness. For the record, I think Giménez deserves to stay in because he's done fantastically, but Miranda not starting at this point in time has next to nothing to do with his qualities as a CB, which is -- correct me if I'm wrong -- what you seem to be implying with that statement.

Will be interesting to see what happens now that Miranda is back. It will be hard to drop Gimenez in this kind of form. Atletico are stacked in that department it seems. They also have Alderweireld on loan at Southampton who's having a terrific season. He's another that was always highly rated but didn't get a proper chance due to the Godin-Miranda partnership.

No.

peter lim bought them out recently. Hes the same guy who put the money forward for neville et al to buy salford city. He's a utd fan and i think used to work for us fairly high up.
Time he proved it by giving us some good players at a decent price. :D

Well looking at how Valencia have confirmed a bid and that massive amounts of money in show, it's fair to say that we're in for him. Arsenal won't spend that much on defender who's yet to take the world by storm. Yet, we see the potential in Otamendi and are going in for him.

Can I just say, that he will slip into our 3-5-2 like a glove because he plays the same at Valencia? The other thing is, he plays at the centre of that three and is more often than not the organiser. He makes some pretty outstandingly flashy tackles of course, but he organises very well too. That is what we need in our defence - An organiser and a leader. Otamendi is that.

We'll have this one wrapped up by Monday.

His heading cannot be questioned because he's an absolute monster in the air. I remember that goal he scored against Madrid. He outmuscled and outjumped Sergio Ramos (A real beast of a header himself) and smashed the ball into the back of the net. This lad can jump high.

Haven't seen much of him but £30m for a CB and we should be getting one of the best, I'm not sure this guy can be called that.

True, but he's got a real good spring on him. Pat Evra was tiny but could jump amazingly high.
Vidic was hardly a giant either, but he could jump high and also time his jumps well. I think that's more important than physical height. Just look at Crouch and Fellaini, they are tall but can hardly jump

I think a 6 foot central defender, no matter how good he is at heading the ball, will struggle in the PL.

Just my opinion, but I'm not convinced at all by this guy.

Have to be honest and say I know nothing about him? Is he worth the reported fee?

Don't see any major club in need of a CB more than us so I'd tend to believe we've made a bid. Have only watched him this season in a handful of games but has looked very good.

Depends what you class as value these days. In a world where Luiz goes for £50m, he's definitely worth £26m

 true
What about the real World?
I appreciate its close to impossible to say how well he will do in the Premiership, however if he is our long term solution, then im hoping he's as good as we need him to be.
