I think this is more wishful thinking from Benfica and the agents rather than serious United interest. I mantain that he´s not good enough for United. I don´t think he can cope with the premier league physically. Would do alright for Valência in my opinion.

Is this guy really that bad?
I've not seen enough of him. Don't know if it's just that he's been linked to us for four years that people don't want him.
Apparently Nani was better then him last season, and we just flogged him for £4mil. I think that tells you everything you need to know.
He's also been touted around Europe for years now, but is still at Benfica. No top club wants to take the punt on him.
He's 27 now, and like @Sam said he's a bit average.
Plus, if you look at the Portuguese league, all the best players there end up moving (Nani/Anderson/Matic/Luiz/Mangala/Falcao etc etc) If they're good enough, they get snapped up the Europe's elite quite quickly. As you say, Gaitan is 27 now, and still there. Hardly screams 'great player'.
He gave us quite a lot of problems when we played them in the CL in 2011. He's a quicker not as technical version of Mata from what I remember.
I couldn't think of many more underwhelming buys than this guy, he's just very average, the Argie Ashley Young.

I think Gaitan has a great agent/PR team. Every summer his name will be all over the papers, linked strongly to the biggest clubs in the world, despite him being quite average.

Reading the Benfica forum, all the users seem to be totally expecting him to play his final game for the club tomorrow. A lot of talk about Van Gaal, and our existing wingers in the Gaitan thread. Can barely make sense of most of the posts after Google Translate has had its way with them. The translations are actually pretty hilarious tbh. All I've really been able to learn from reading the thread is that the fans have a nickname for him that translates to 'Ace'.

Would anyone take Gaitan now, seeing as it looks like he's the only realistic option? Although we've been linked with him forever, I get the feeling that there's something in the rumours. I think he could take that spot on the right, with hopefully Mata coming into the attacking midfielder role.

No one is willing to take Gaitan for the prices that have been mentioned. It isn´t surprising that he hasn´t moved after 5 seasons, in contrast with other expensive Benfica footballers, he simply isn´t good enough for a top european club. Yesterday i went to Benfica´s main forum after they lost to Arouca and most supporters besides criticizing him harshly, say that he isn´t even worth 20 million euros. The best quote came from a user that said, translating, "If Gaitan could shoot, he would be a top winger". If Mendes can´t put him at Valência or Mónaco, it really says it all. The only concrete bid for him came from Al-Ittihad
