Nicolas Gaitan

I have a feeling he doesn't even exist and he is a myth created by the media.

I've had the same thought - I never see or hear any reference to him at any time other than transfer links to us; I mean if he actually did exist, then surely we'd hear something about him actually playing the game at some point during a season these last few years? I mean he's meant to be good enough for us to spend £30m on, and to approach the deal with such precision that shames the Normandy landings, he must be some amazing player, right?

You never hear anything about players in Portugal.

He has been Benficas best player for the last few years. He does not score much but he is great at creating chances and letting others score. 4 goals and 16 assists in 37 games this season. He has not featured that much for Argentina due to the extreme level of competition with players like Messi, Di Maria, Aguero, Tevez, Pastore and Lavezzi playing on the positions that suit him best. But nonethless he is a quality player and I really don't understand why people would be so against him coming here.

2014/2015: 4 goals and 16 assists
2013-2014: 8 goals and 12 assists
2012-2013: 5 goals and 12 assists
2011-2012: 4 goals and 17 assists
2010-2011: 9 goals and 10 assists

In total 30 goals and 67 assists in 214 games (15437 minutes total play time) for Benfica over the last 5 seasons

That is an average of:
43 games played per season
3087 minutes per season or 72 minutes per game
Scoring 0.14 goals per match or 0.18 per 90 minutes played
Assisting 0.31 goals per match or 0.4 goals per 90 minutes played

Those are some pretty consistent amazing stats he has for a winger/attacking midfielder.

Looks like a fantastic intelligent player with great skill who is at the prime of his ability (27 years old atm). Considering he is from argentina and apparently a great mate with Di Maria (he could develop a similar relationship with Di Maria as Herrera and Mata have). I would not mind him coming here at all if the price is right. Certainly much rather have him than Nani.

If we get a new winger than I hope it is him or Felipe Anderson. I think Gaïtan is better atm but F.Anderson is 22 and might present better value on the long term.

We have 5 players already competing for the wide roles and as much as some may want it Di Maria isn't suddenly going to be used in midfield by LvG. If we bought another winger he'd have to be the type of player you just don't want to miss out on, not a run of the mill winger like Gaitan.

Why not, his best football came from playing in the midfield at Real Madrid also Matas best football comes from playing in the midfield. He is a similar player like those 2, can play on the wing and can play on the midfield.

The way I see it we need 6 players to compete for the right wing, attacking midfield and left wing

Depay, Young, Gaitan, Di Maria, Mata and Rooney/Fellaini would make 6 and Rooney would also often play as main striker

I don't think it is a priority for us atm considering we need a striker, midfielder, centreback, rightback much more than another one of these winger/attacking midfielders but singing one would not be a bad idea if we look for double cover on these positions and want great competiton for the places. Obviously it would only make sense if Januzaj is considered not ready enough and would be loaned out. (which I think is what going to happen).

LvG likes possession, strength and caution in midfield, pretty much the complete opposite of everything Di Maria is, he even played Young there over him, it's the same with Mata, he's too slow and weak to play in the midfield 3, if LvG wanted to use him there we'd have to make the base a double DM pivot to cover for his weaknesses.

LW: Memphis/Young
ST: Rooney/New striker/Wilson
RW: Di Maria/Mata/Januzaj

That's enough if we get Schneiderlin and Gundogan to complete our midfield.

Yea that might be enough

But I do think januzaj and Wilson would be better off with a loan, they didnt impress on any single occassion last season and if they want to develop they will have to get playing time. I don't think we can give them that right now.

Left wing: Depay, Young
Right wing: Gaïtan, Di Maria, Mata
CAM: Di Maria, Mata, Fellaini, Rooney
Striker: Rooney, New striker (for example Benteke), Depay, Fellaini (in emergency situations or if we just need a target upfront)

That would be 8 players for 4 positions

The other 2 midfield positions would be:

Carrick, Herrera + 2 new midfielders (for example Gündogan and Schneiderlin) (and also Blind but I'd use him more for cover on the leftback)

(with Carrick being eased out of the team as he is getting old and very injurry prone)

Also again I'am not saying we have to sign Gaïtan because I don't think the position is a priority but if we do than it would have to be to use one of those players in an CAM position. I don't know if Van Gaal wants that, I don't know if it is going to happen. But if we do end up signing Gaïtan I wouldn't mind because If i look at his stats he seems like a fantastic player.

I think Wilson needs a loan but that isn't really going to affect a lot as Rooney will start most of the games anyway. As far as Januzaj goes, I don't know what we are going to do with him, I mean if we loan but buy a player to take the spot he leaves then what do we do when he comes back? I think we have to be very careful with how we handle Adnan over the next year.

I agree that if we did buy him or any new wide player it would indicate LvG suddenly changing his mind on either Mata or Di Maria in a central role, but I still don't think Gaitan would be good enough to balance out what we lose out wide. Stats don't tell the story, I've seen him plenty of times over the years and he's never looked anything special IMO, just another Ashley Young level player. If we were going to add another wide attacker then Felipe Anderson looks a better investment to me.

This link has grown cold. Very strange. Just another made up transfer rumor I guess

Gaitan himself admitted so IIRC.

Easily the transfer I've never wanted to happen. I don't even know why I bother opening this thread

I believe you're suffering from a classic case of muppet dodgetitis:

If the poor guy ever does get a phonecall from Woodward he'll probably hang up thinking it's a prank.

He's become the annual uninspiring transfer link for us, surprisingly it hasn't earned him a move to any other big league club and he's still at Benfica. Well, Garay ended up at Zenit who are worse than Benfica so it's probably better for Gaitan to stay where he is (maybe not financially).

Linked with him again. Deal sealed according to the very reliable Metro lol. I really hope we're not going for him.

Atletico are supposed to be negotiating for him. Which makes sense if Turan is leaving.

If we sell Nani for 4.25m and buy this guy for 20-30m, then Woodward's goodwill is spent. Would be the most idiotic transfer move by an English club since Andy Carroll.

Why blame Woodward? If LvG says he doesn't need Nani but he needs Gaitan, Woodward has to do the best he can with it. In any case I don't think we are buying Gaitan, but then I'm not the manager.

I suggest you to stop following transfer rumours if you really think there's any real chance of him coming to us.

Continuing to be linked with him, and other wingers. The only way I could see us getting another wing is if Van Gaal decides to play Di Maria as an LCM, which I can't really see, to be honest.

If will be absolutely sickened if we waste money on this guy. He really is no better than average.

...and some on this forum actually bitched about perspective of signing Bale ?

Lord help these people.

So now that Rafael's agent has pretty much confirmed we're in talks with Benfica, do we finally start believing that we have genuine interest in this fella or not? Definitely seems weird, we've gone through three managers who apparently all wanted him and he hasn't exactly set the world alight.

I read this morning that Rafael's agent has confirmed we're in for him with a swap deal. I really don't know what this guy would offer our team or where we would play him. Unless the rumours of Di Maria to PSG are true which would also mean Cavani is coming our way also.

Prbably a club/Woodward target? i dont know, but being apparently interested n him for so long is weird. He isnt good enough, unless he steps up massively, which i dont expect.

Is he Mendes client? Perhaps another loyalty bonus to Mendes for the amazing job he's done for us.
