10 goals in 26 games (22 starts) for Wigan now - impressive for a 19 year old.

I am a little less happy with Powell banging in goals for Wigan after seeing this....

Jesus, I don't mean to get all sanctimonious, but is that really appropriate?

I mean, I've hear City fans singing it, but a player actually wearing the T-shirt?

The bombing of Manchester in the war killed over a thousand civiilans and injured thousands more. Many of them, presumably, were City fans - I wonder what their families thought of seeing their "star striker" parading around in that t-shirt.

Wasn't great when City were so small time and were OK with being small time. Like, the time with the Tevez poster was small time, but parading a player at Maine Road in that is just brilliant.

Really? I didn't know that. He took over straight from Roberto Martinez?

No, Owen Coyle took over first and was sacked. Uwe Rossler then took the job after leaving his managerial role at Brentford.

Wigan lost a beloved manager in the summer, a manager who had brought them their greatest success.

Dave Whelan decided to replace that beloved manager with a good old fashioned British manager, a dour Scotsman no less.

The dour Scotsman found himself with one of the best squads in his division. Alas, under the command of the dour Scotsman and his archaic British tactics the Wigan team faltered and found itself playing insipid football rewarding them only with mid table mediocrity.

Whelan swung the axe on the dour Scotsman and brought in Rosler, a progressive coach who got the side playing football again. The players found their spark again and started winning games. They are now challenging for promotion as was expected.

Fans of a club like Wigan would gladly take a major trophy and relegation. Beating City in the FA Cup final was the greatest day in their history, if you like it or not.

Sounds like you are onto something

I'll admit, I smirked.

Cool story bro.

I wonder how their fans are taking Saturyday's 3-0 defeat to a team in the relegation zone... hopefully more calmly than people on here would.

Sir A1ex

It was tongue in cheek. Rosler has plenty of time to feck things up. I do get annoyed by posters who seem to think that Moyes has little influence on the ways players perform though.

What do we reckon the chances are of this lad staking a claim for the first team next season? As much as I can gather he's more of an attacking midfielder than a pure CM. Would he be able to play in a midfield 2? :)

Yes he would. One of the interesting things is he likes to get back and put a tackle in. Even playing up front this season and sometimes in the hole behind another striker, he averages 2 tackles a game. We have 3 players who have averaged more than those 2 tackles a game (and played 5 or more games. Mata is 2.5 over 4 matches, Zaha 2.5 in 1 match). The point is he wont shirk his defending and would therefore be okay in a midfield duo. The one thing I personally think he needs to work on is his passing for ball retention. He's shown some good vision and can be involved in good passing moves, but over the course of a game I dont think he currently keeps the ball well enough. He's only likely to improve this by playing week in week out as a central midfielder, not as a striker.

simply quality. He has the assurance and confidence of a seasoned footballer. He will start as a squad player no doubt. But will quickly play a number of games. we would be getting at least one top midfield player if not two. But Powell will still get games.

Is he fit again? Seems to get injured a lot.

We need to bring him back and start giving him game time with the first team next season. He has all the ingredients to make it here.

Have we figured out what his position for us would be yet?

I would have thought when we loaned him out we would have asked Wigan what position he was going to be playing. Sends strange we would loan him to be a striker if we were planning on making him a cm.

If he is a striker do we expect him to be rvp's replacement in couple years time? He's too promising to be Rooney's/matas/januzaj ' s understudy as a number ten as they would surely be higher than him in the pecking order for that role.

Not to go over board but I think we can mould him into an 'Aaron Ramsey' kind of box-to-box player. He's a big lad, great engine, eye for goal, loves to tackle, good vision. The one evident flaw he needs to work upon is his passing, which is very sloppy for a player aspiring to play for Manchester United. But I believe that can be sorted out by the back room staff. If there's one real criticism of him it's that he takes things a bit too easy in the training - some of Wigan's players have testified to that. Has to really step up in practise if he's to get his chance under Moyes, who is a demanding taskmaster.

i think he could do with another year out on loan for next season, hopefully in the PL playing as a midfielder as well. that would be perfect.

he can come back as a versatile midfielder for us. he got the goals in him for sure.

The training thing is very worrying.

That's never been an aspect of a young player that works well with us.

Yeah I dont think another year on loan would do him harm especially if he can actually get a starting spot in central midfield. The only thing is he's a proper goal threat so Moyes might want him on the bench. But the loan would be better for Powell himself.

If we are in the Europa League, we will have quite a high rate of rotation and I think he would play his part.

I could see him coming back into the squad next season. Looks like Hernandez and Kagawa are likely candidates to leave in the summer(I think Hernandez is a certainty) and Powell's versatility would make him a useful squad player.

Seems to have played a lot of his Wigan loan as a forward as his main position and attacking midfielder second. He's not played a single game for them as an orthodox central midfielder. Hence his good goal record which is difficult to ignore. Could see him providing an alternative option as an attacker if we do lose Kagawa and Hernandez this summer.

If Moyes does not want to accommodate that, then give him another year out on loan.

I'm starting to think this kid is not going to develop into a central midfielder. Most of his playing experience has been as an attacking midfielder or now as a forward which suggests the way to get the best out of him is to play him in attack. He's still young enough to learn the position but having him play first team football in another position is not the ideal way to develop him in it.

Are you, by any chance, a crazy person?

Yes, yes I am. Thank you for noticing.

I recognize the writing style! :D

I haven't seen all that much of Powell outside the reserves, but he's never struck me as a central midfielder, maybe a Frank Lampard sort of attacking midfielder.

The last thing we need these days is someone who struggles passing. He will certainly improve his passing as he ages, but we need players who are among the best passers in the league in our midfield, if not the world.

I feel he has the potential to be a good central midfielder dear sir, provided he works hard for it. Even Sir Alex and Dario Gradi felt that was his best position. Although Fergie played Anderson and Alan Smith in midfield so :nervous:.

Let's just agree to disagree there shall we. :)
