Powell pushing Kagawa?

He's not even close to being ready on this season's performances.

Powell will break through at some point, whether this coming year or the next. He's got the quality to develop into long term United player.

SAF said words to the effect that he was signed as a deeper central midfielder and Kagawa as an attacking mid when we were on tour last summer.

I know. But as of now, from whenever he has played, and from whatever I have seen of him, he seems to be the "in-the-hole" type of player. Hence.

Just hope he doesn't ends up like Anderson. :nervous:

Powell will be on loan next season!

I reckon you're right. Sir said he didn't send him on loan this season as he wanted to keep a close eye on his fitness and as a result he hasn't really taken the next step in terms of experience and overall progression. He needs regular first-team football next season.

I haven't seen much of Powell for our U21s, but at Crewe he was a very advanced player. Rarely played as an actual central midfielder. He was in the hole or even right off the striker. I don't know how he's played in our set up. Seems odd we would buy an all-out attacking midfielder and mold him into a deep lying midfielder. It doesn't really suit what he appears to be very good at. He's an excellent striker of the ball from the edge of the box, two footed, a real eye for goal. His passing certainly isn't his strong suit, nor is his defensive work rate.

More of a young Gerrard than a Scholes, in my opinion.

Not really comparable to either in my opinion. I would say that he is more like Lampard than either of those two but still that is not a great comparison. He has more flair than Frank for a start.

I think that his best position would be in a set up like this.

---------Fellani----------Carrick---------
-----------------Powell-----------------
----Bale--------------------Kagawa-----

That's what I have thought. Looks more Gerrard or Lampard than he looks Scholes.

I'd say he'll definitely be on loan next season. SAF pretty much always does that with youngsters he signs, unless they already have experience in a top tier league before we do get them. I'm sure Moyes will adapt a similar approach. It's the right call too.

Said this in the Januzaj thread, its probably more for this thread. How do people say Januzaj and Powell compare, for those who watch the reserve teams often? I've only ever watched Powell play for the first team those 2 or 3 times he did, and today was the only time I've really watched Januzaj. Who's the more promising one of the two?

Is that where he's played for our U21 set up? If so, fair enough. As I say, at Crewe, he was right behind the frontman, alot like Gerrard would be behind Torres. An all out attacker very capable of playing in and around the box. His strengths lie with his goalscoring as far as I have seen. A really sweet striker of the ball.

I can't remember the exact quotes or whatever but I'm pretty sure Steve Davis said that he was naturally a centre midfielder but Crewe needed his goal threat so played him further forward

Januzaj seems the more impressive talent at the moment given that he is a full year younger and is more accomplished on the ball. Powell's second half of the season has been completely obliterated by injury though so it's difficult to say. I'm impressed with the versatility of the two of them - both have played out wide, high up and through the centre. They'll be directly competing with each other for a place in the squad in the coming years if Powell isn't moulded as a centre midfielder.

They're different players but they're both our standout talents. In this current age where United supporters are desperate for creativity and players in the Mata/Silva mould, Januzaj will probably excite more. Before Powell got injured though, he was our top man. Unfortunately Januzaj was just getting going at that point so it's hard to compare.

Powell is more of a goal threat but Januzaj is a bit silkier and more creative in and around the box. They've both shown good dribbling ability and have the ability to go past players. I was as disappointed as the next man in how the Pogba and Morrison situations turned out, but we've seemingly got two equally talented players here with the attitude to go with it.

He'll get more game time next season I reckon.

He's not ready for a significant role but he's too good to just be stuck in the reserves for another season and can't really see us loaning him when he's already got lower league experience.

The problem is we have too many players with bit part roles.

Why is Bale and Fellaini in your side, Jimmy? Did I miss something? ;)

:) That team works for me.

He has played in various positions. I agree that he is a goal threat rather than a dictator of play. I am skeptical of him as a true midfielder. I would actually say the #10 is his most likely position.

What's happening with him? For some reason I get this feeling that he isn't going to make it at United.

Had surgery on an injury at the end of the season.

The comparisons with Gerrard and Lampard work for me. Great things lie ahead for Powell as a goal scoring midfielder.

To loan or not to loan? If we do bring in Alcantara and Strootman I say send him on loan. To where, I have no idea.

If we sell Anderson on top of Scholes' departure, and accept that Fletcher cannot be factored into decisions about the club's future, then even with the purchase of a first team midfielder (like Thiago) I'd keep him around the squad. He and Cleverley would then be our back-up to said midfielder. Even if we also get someone to be back-up to Carrick, I'd consider keeping him in the squad, since he's too attacking to ever be in competition for that position anyway.

But if we don't get rid of Anderson (surely it's time now!) or buy more than one player for that slot next to Carrick, then yes a loan would seem the sensible decision.

We need to be careful with our loanee destinations. We've gotten it wrong far to often.

Powells still young. It's not going to be easy to be honest. We'll probably buy in his position. It's 50/50

What position does Januzaj play? because surely he is ahead of him in the pecking order. Loan may not be a bad idea. To a club where he will play week in week out. I think he could play at any of the promoted club but that would be a hard season for the lad but it would do him good. We need a goal scoring midfielder we haven't had one since Scholes' peak.

Who is ahead of whom?

Januzaj ahead of Powell in terms of youngsters making it into the first team squad and getting games. I was wondering what Januzaj's best position is because if that is the same as Powell's he will get even less games. The games that would go to Powell would go to Januzaj who is younger and currently the better/more promising player.
