Nick Powell

He once again showed superb desire to contribute defensively for a young mostly attacking player. There was one incident for example where he ran half the pitch to track his fullback and slid in to deny the cross at the byline out for a corner kick. He also showed some nice vision to play Rooney in once. A few flashes.

The boy is for real. Very real.

We may as well resign ourselves, in light of the tone of some of the posts on this thread, that Nick Powell will be sensational for us.

Bits and bobs here and there but he's still very raw. Gets knocked off the ball very easily and I kept confusing which player was him on my shitty foreign stream so I didn't get a decent look at him.

He wasn't great last night. He still looks like he is coming to terms with the pace of top level football, he does seem to dally on the ball too much, he needs more intensity to his game. On the plus side, he always gets in dangerous positions. I would like to see him get a good Championship loan after Christmas.

Just remembered the ball he played through to Rooney at one point. That was delightful.

The quality is apparent. There is a long way to go for him to become a complete player though. He is still very much a rookie.

Agree.

My take on this!

He need to play in a team who suits his current level ..

I thought he did well in a less than thankful role. He was involved most of the intricate play we had and was for me the only postive note from last night together with Jones.

The quality he has was evident in brief flashes last night but so was his rawness. I remember him trying to lazily drift inside just outside the box and the defender reading it too easily and dispossessing him. Not a bad performance considering he was played on the left!

Agreed, I wouldn't loan him yet though, I'd keep him on the bench, get him on in some big games if we can.

I don't think it was laziness, he seemed knackered from all the defensive work he did and the fall he had in the first half.

Surely he must be, can't see Tunnicliffe making the bench ahead of him in a game like this.

Rumours that he's going to Leicester City on loan.

Disappointed he's not been on the bench over the Xmas period but given how the games played out, I don't think he would've got on.

A loan would be good for him provided he actually plays.

I wouldn't send him to Leicester, they have hardly used Lingard and Keane (of course Keane has been injured but still). Pearson did a good job of using our young lads when he was at Hull, but he's made Lingard's loan fairly pointless. I'd see if Steve Bruce wants him since he's doing a great job with Robbie Brady at the moment.

Hull always seems like a good place, how many former players of ours are actually there?

Maybe Lingaard is just not ready for that level? Powell looks a step ahead.

Four: James Chester, Corry Evans, Paul McShane, Joe Dudgeon with Ben Amos and Robbie Brady on loan.

I was going to say Danny Drinkwater as well but he plays for Leicester. Hull's been pretty good for our loans I guess. They found careers there at least and get game time.

That's what I would say too, Powell is a different class and has first team football experience. He really is a step ahead.

With Scholes and Giggs possibly retired, he'll get game time at United next season so next six months are going to be crucial. He should go on loan to a Championship side or perhaps even Premier League if anyone feels like taking a gamble.

Leicester also have 5 former United lads plus 2 on loan.

Powell is definitely physically more ready for Championship football than Lingard.

He isn't at Powell's stage of development yet. You simply can't make the case that he is.

And he's 2 years older, 20 already. He might not make it here but he should at least be a decent Premier League/Championship footballer on the basis of what I've seen, he's taking too long to develop though.

Until we have an alternate to current reserve league we should really stay away from signings like these. It does nothing but stagnate the development of young players at a very crucial stage of their career.

If we are convinced by the potential then we are better off agreeing a future fee but leaving the player where they are until we feel they are actually ready to stake a claim in first team.
