Canadian NHL player Mike Danton has been arrested by police in the United States for his alleged role in a murder-for-hire plot.
St. Louis Blues forward Mike Danton was arrested by police for his alleged role in a murder-for-hire plot. (CP Photo) According to the FBI, Danton was apprehended in San Jose, California on Friday morning, just hours after playing for the St. Louis Blues in Thursday night's playoff game against the Sharks.
"It's beyond shock," said Blues forward Doug Weight on Saturday. "I don't know what to say."
"It's tough," Blues forward Keith Tkachuk told reporters. "I don't know what's going on. You guys probably know more than I do."
A criminal complaint filed in a federal court in Illinois states that Danton and a woman, 19-year-old Katie Wolfmeyer, allegedly attempted to hire a man to kill a male acquaintance.
The acquaintance had quarreled with Danton last Tuesday. The FBI said Danton claimed he took action because he feared for his life.
According to the complaint, Danton told Wolfmeyer that a "hit man" from Canada was coming to kill him and asked her if she knew someone who would kill the person for $10,000 US.
Authorities said Wolfmeyer, who was also arrested, confessed to helping Danton try to locate a "hit man," and that this person spoke with Danton on Wednesday.
The FBI said Danton hatched a plot where the man could kill the "hit man" at Danton's apartment. The plan was to make it look like two burglars had broken in, one being killed and the other making off with $3,000 Danton had in a safe.
The criminal complaint also said the argument involved "promiscuity and use of alcohol" by Danton, who "begged the acquaintance not to go to [Blues general manager Larry Pleau] ... and ruin his career."
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the court document also describes a recorded phone call the FBI persuaded the unidentified man to make to Danton, apparently before his arrest.
"The acquaintance called Danton and asked Danton why he wanted to have him killed," it says. "Danton broke down and sobbed. Danton explained that he felt backed into a corner and also felt that the acquaintance was going to leave him. Danton did not want to allow the acquaintance to leave him, therefore decided to have him murdered."
Authorities said Friday they have no reason to believe that the acquaintance or anyone else had been planning to kill Danton. "We couldn't confirm that to be accurate," said Marshall Stone, supervisory FBI special agent in Springfield, Ill.
Danton is charged with conspiring and using a telephone across state lines to set up a murder. If convicted, he could be imprisoned up to 10 years and fined up to $250,000 US on each of the two counts.
Blues spokesman Frank Buonomo declined to comment Friday, saying in a statement, "The matter is in the hands of law enforcement officials and the judicial system."
The 23-year-old Danton was born near Toronto in Brampton Ont. He played junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League for the Sarnia Sting, St. Mike's Majors and Barrie Colts.
The New Jersey Devils drafted him in the fifth round of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He was suspended by the Devils for the 2001-02 season after a dispute with general manger Lou Lamoriello.
Danton played 17 games with the Devils last season, before being traded to the Blues during the summer.
"He brings a great presence to the dressing room, so it's just real tough to see him go through this,"Blues defenceman Bryce Salvador said. "I really do feel like he's family. It's unfortunate, because he's a great guy."
"We're worried about his life right now and what he's going through," added Weight. "It's a scary thought."
"I feel for him and I'm praying for him."
In summer of 2002 he legally changed his name from Michael Jefferson to Michael Danton.

sorry..i just realised....nealn said:This was 4-2...

game 7 on tuesday Ottawa @ Toronto

well..i was pretty impressed by their discipline, if you did watch the whole playoffs, the first few games we've killed way too many roughing / slashing penalties, they really improved!nealn said:Lalime really stank the place out in that first period. Unbelievably poor performance for a game 7. Darcy Tucker's dive was almost Makelele like... Still, Toronto are looking very strong. Belfour is on fire at the moment, as is Niewendyk and even Domi. My new faves to come out of the East if Belfour keeps playing like he is.

I love watching Belfour making brilliant saves, there was a couple nice ones in game 7, a bit unlucky that if I still remember right, the Sens. hit the post, anyway, Eddie was outstanding.
I don't know what happened to Lalime, he was tremendous in game 6!
Makelele's dive's worse then Tucker's...
can't expect much better then nieuwendyk can you... he's such a great goalscorer. and Domi, he's rough, he knows exactly what he's looking for and always wanna win the puck back, and that's why he had that great assist for our first goal.
anyway, if they leafs can keep this pressure on, think vs. the Flyers will be an exciting game to watch, sigh, but our series this year was 1-3-0 ...... not looking good huh?
nealn said:Torontos discipline really upped itself but the way Eddie was playing in some of those games and the way the Ottawa PP was performing for all but that first you had to wonder whether it really mattered. Niewendyk had really played well that series at both ends of the ice and he'll have to pick up a lot of the slack if Sundin is out much longer. Tie Domi's been doing well offensivy. That pass was brilliant and he still leads the team in postseason SOG. Mogilney has really underperformed so far this postseason and will have to stepup. Bryan Leetch, well what can you say, the veteran has shown himself to be one of the best acquisitions for any team in the runup to the trade deadline. Tucker's dive was, like I said, almost Makelele like. It will take a really classless dive to match that.
Philly will be a tough series but I'm going to back the Leaves to come out of that series and possibly setup a classic Battle of Canada in the Eastern finals. Something tells me Belfour is going to really carry you guys against Philly. One thing is for sure. The discipline will have to be pretty good as Philadelphia's PP was shooting at an awesome 33.3% against NJ. NJ only gave up 12 oppertunities the entire series but the Flyers took their oppertunities when they were given them.
Jacqueline_S said:yeh, what can I say, Belfour was just outstanding thoroghout the whole series, he kept a pretty good record in going to the second round also, so, no doubt he's our number 1 star. Actually, I don't really need to worry, I think the players know what they are up to and oh well... an hour to go until the first game, just hope they won't lose another 7-1 and seriosuly, i don't really care if the Leafs can go much further 'coz the chance is limited but the bottom line is they've beaten the Sens
What do you think 'bout Tomas Kaberle? I think he should be a forward instead of a defender, or a left wing? The way that he plays is something similar to Sundin in someway.
oh and btw, you really think that the Montreal Canadiens can will? their opponent's LIGHTNING...i don't mean that the Canadiens' crap, they won vs. Boston, who ranked second, but...lightning's a way much better team.
nealn said:I doubt Montreal will get through but I was just saying that if the Leaves got through there could be a Battle of Canada and that would be one hell of a series. The thing is you never really know in the playoffs. Last season the Wings were a far better team than Anaheim. Minnasota were better than Colorado. Anaheim should never have been able to take the Devils to a game 7 but these things happen in the playoffs. Its what makes them so fecking great!
Kaberle is a good d-man. He does have some skills though and could be used as a forward if Sundin and Nolan don't return soon. With the Flyers playing Hitchcock hockey getting good offense will be vital.
What do you think of the Sens axing Martin today? He's a good coach but winning only 4/12 of their last playoff series says it all. Ottawa have the talent to reach the finals of the cup but they need a better playoff coach to get there. What are the odds on Quennville ending up there? Pretty short I'd guess.
I tell you what else I'm looking forward to in the Leaves .v. Flyers series. Domi and Brashear. I'm betting they'll have dropped the gloves by game 4.
