N'Golo Kante | Off to Chelsea

:wenger: I completely forgot they just signed Krychowiak.

Maybe the rumors that Real Madrid wanted him were true but he decided he was actually going to play regularly here and rejected them.

Could be so yeah, they will have missed out on Pogba so need to bring somebody in to make plebs happy.

It's a great price for Kante, Chelsea just merked Leicester City.

I wonder if Vardy is regretting staying at Leicester yet? if Mahrez jumps ship too for a plum move after his great season Vardy will be crying into his pillow rejecting The Gunners

Just as good as the overpriced Pogba is Kante, for a quarter of the price. Top business by Chelsea. They mean business for the top 4 this season.

Shrewd Chelsea. Good prices, deals done early. No messing about for Conte.

Shame. I was hoping to see how he did with Leicester in the CL this season. Good signing for Chelsea.

That's what I'm wondering. Doubt it was City as they just bought Gündogan and have Fernandinho and Fernando. Plus they're after Sané. Spurs just bought Wanyama and have Dier there too. Arsenal signed Xhaka and have Coquelin.

Maybe United and Liverpool? With PSG being the European club?

Would not surprise me if United were one of them. Would be disappointed if we have not attempted it. Doubt it was City, but Arsenal despite Xhaka would be crazy not to. I'm sure Wenger would love to have him.

Another example of how playing in Europe isn't the be all and end all of player transfers. Especially if one team can offer more money.

Champion's League is overrated on this forum I think.

Money is what matters to players, money and a good project.

Can't blame Kante capitalising on a great season to get his plum "dream" move.. Leicester City won't top last season so there's no great time to turn when you are that hot. If Leicester City fail next season it will be on Jamie Vardy's head he will feel the scolding from the Leicester City supporters as football supporters and media have short memories.. he should've left !

Mahrez should be looking to jump ship while he's still hot property.

Money, coach, location, and maybe even having a player's mates in a team are probably a bigger deal than just CL football.

Conte clearly has some pull. RMC and another outlet claim he turned down 2 big prem clubs and European giant to join them, rumoured Juve or Madrid.

It is a very good signing. Wonder if theyll keep Matic and use Kante and Fabregas with him in a midfield 3.

He reminds me slightly of Makelele, and when Chelsea had him they were formiddable. Suspect Conte is building a workhorse as opposed to a eye pleasing team. His choice of course, and hes entitled to

Because we've already got an abundance of creative talent in midfield? :wenger:

Really we should have tried for both. Kante should have been the priority to go after first, rather than yet another futile Woodward crusade to sign an unrealistic target.

Well last Summer would you have preferred to have signed an more than capable CB, or spent the whole Summer trying to sign an unattainable target like Ramos? The result was we went all in for Ramos and ended up playing Daily sodding Blind at CB all season

It's frustrating seeing the whole thing happen again with poxy Pogba. Guns to our heads, we all know in real life it's not going to happen. We should've swooped up Kante and had our key targets secured early.

But it looks like United are repeating their mistake of a year ago. Daily sodding Blind in CM for a year.

Rant over.

We have enough glitter in the side. Could do with some much needed grit.

Could see Chelsea going to the formula which worked before with Makelele, Essien and Lampard.
This time with Matic, Kante and Fabregas.

Great signing for Chelsea if it goes through as expected.

I'm convinced we'd have been in for him had we not already had Schneiderlin in our squad. I have a feeling he'll be a much better player under Jose.

just a few short weeks ago all the twitter reports were certain the Vardy to Arsenal deal was done, he signed a new contract, now whilst Kante may well leave these people on twitter are not confirmation of anything

Except they don't have relationships like that.

How do you know who Edward Woodward knows?:smirk:

The point is that a player may be prevented from joining the club of his choice even when they're prepared to meet his release clause. Which defeats the purpose of the clause.

This is true.
Unless Mahrez believes he can be even better. If he believes in himself, he can stay for another season at LCFC, before making a big money move to a big club. He could also ask for another contract with LCFC, which gives him greater wages, immediately, while not needing to uproot his family/home/etc.
His selling point in 12 months (assuming he does well this season) will be that he has been one of the best player in the league for 2 seasons (not just a one season wonder). This will of course, command bigger wages than what he can get today (as a one season wonder).

If more then 1 team is trying to sign him. It stops Leicester getting short changed if he becomes hot property.

Leicester have his replacement for a third the money they just got for Kante.

I'm honestly happy that he went to Chelsea rather than any of our other Premier League competitors.

They are the ones who currently have the most talented/complete set of midfielders to play either in a midfield two or three compared to the likes of City, Arsenal, Spurs or Liverpool. Lets assume that they've brought him in to replace Matic or Fabregas, who both have shown vast amounts of talent bar the freak season last year. If they are to replace Matic, who'd I argue had a better 14/15 season that Kantes 15/16 season, I would be happy. If they replaced Fabregas, who was one of the main reasons Chelsea won the title that year, I would not be unhappy (for a lack of a better word).

Compare that to him replacing either one of Coquelin, Cazorla (?), Wilshere, Eleny (?), Henderson, Lucas, Can, Fernando, Fernanindho, Delph or Toure?

He's certainly a good player who had an insane season with Leicester, but the fact that Chelsea was the one to buy him is not as worrying to me as if any of the others got him.

I think Kante is a bit overrated in this forum. He is a very good midfield in a team that sits back and defends in numbers as interceptions and covering ground are his biggest strengths. It will be interesting to see how he performs in a team that loves to attack and in a two man midfield partnering someone who is more attacking minded. Also he is going to cost around 30 millions pounds which is not cheap by any means for a defensive midfielder.
I think Chelsea with opt for 3 man midfield with Cesc(playmaker) - kante and matic(B2B) as 3 midfielders next season.

Our midfield is a complete mess.

Another reliable source:

When Pogba is going to cost £100m or more and average players like Sterling and Stones are £50m I'd say £32m is a very good price.

I don't think you can properly assess prices in relation to a few outliers .... otherwise any old hack player costing £20m would be deemed a great bargain.

£32m for Kante is not a terribly expensive price, but neither is a "very good".

Fair enough, it is a significant chunk of change. In this crazy market I just think we'd be getting one hell of a deal.
