Whats with the Sean Payton to Dallas rumours ? I don't have a lot of love for Payton

The surface every couple of years. Jerry won't do it - Garrett is the perfect yes man.

Yeah but this year things might be different Jerry has said as things stand we are a long way away from the Superbowl

To me that sounds like a man thinking of making major changes .

With Linehan getting sacked days after Jason Garrett saying he was safe who is to say Garrett has already been sacked but doesn't know it yet ?

Such nonsense. If the refs call that blatant facemask on Goff on the preceding series it's the Rams with a new set of downs at the NO-1, and likely the Rams punching it in for a 24-20 lead with 5-6 minutes remaining (versus settling for a tying FG after a failed 3rd down at NO-2 thereafter with 5:04 left). The Saints then took the next drive down to kick a FG after the missed PI/PF call(s) before the Rams tied it again.

If the Rams had gone up by 4 that means the Saints would have faced this decision on the subsequent series (following the missed call): 4th-and-10 at the LAR 13 with 1:44 (I think it was) with the actual PI/PF still missed --
a) kick a FG and then onside kick attempt,
b) kick a FG then kickoff deep/squib kick and force Rams to punt,
c) go for the first down/touchdown on 4th down.
Note: Even if that call was made that's still the Saints trailing by 4 with 1:44 to play but a first down at the LAR-1 (or 2) I believe. Saints probably score a TD to take a 27-24 lead but plenty of time for the Rams to tie it up (or take the lead).

C would be the correct decision, IMO, as the win percentages likely favor C over the other two. They may gain a first down getting closer to taking the lead and winding more time, or may have scored on the play itself to take the lead, or they may have failed to convert but still have 2 TOs remaining and can possibly force the Rams to punt from inside their 20.

In that third scenario (no first/TD), let's say 1:38 left when Rams initially takeover o/a LAR 10 then two rush plays + two NO timeouts = about 0:10 run off, so that's 3rd-and-X with about 1:28. Another run, by time ball is set puts to say 1:20, and so that means the punt gets off around 0:40, and probably decent field position for the Saints to try again, likely needing 50-60 yards to win with a touchdown and 0:30 left to do it.

They could also have elected B and hoped to hold off for a similar punt & time scenario though giving the Rams more yardage forward and thus pushing the Saints a bit further back after a punt, needing a lot of yards for a potential winning FG attempt. But A would have effectively ended the game barring some crazy long pass play assuming they held for a punt as in B & C. Onside kicks rarely occur these days and doing such puts the Rams around the NO-45 and thus even a defensive stop pins the Saints deep on a punt play, likely inside their 10 barring a great return, a touchback, or a Rams penalty. That means 0:30 to get some 40-50 yards for a long FG to potentially win the game.

Problem with hoping the other side is forced it punt is 1) defense actually stops them on three downs, and 2) no defensive penalties - either likely ends the game and thus electing C seems the more rewarding scenario.

Bottom line is that missed facemask by a NO defender was just a costly as the missed PI/PF on the LAR defender.

But I'd be pissed as well if that had been my team losing like the Saints did.

Btw, not sure when the blatant facemask by a NO defender on Crooks occurred and how that drive ended - that may have altered more positively for the Rams as well.

So what’s everyones predictions for the NFL awards next week?

Or, rather than predictions, what you think they should be?

I think COTY will go to McVay, but I agree with everything else. I'd like to see Reich win it though as it's a great story.

Pats 27, Rams 20

Only prediction that matters for me.
Tbh I think the Rams match up well against the Pats. Our O-line has been amazing so far, but it seems a matter of time before someone starts to break it and we’re coming up against Donald/Suh next. Plus, with Gurley being a non-factor in the NFC Championship game, there really is no clear threat for BB to make plans for in the SB.

It will be interesting to see how Brady copes with the Rams O-line, he hasn't had to sweat on a hit or tackle in 90 drop backs so far. It's the most critical element/matchup of the game IMO.

He reads it as fast as lightning, so you'll have to keep him guessing with different setups and then you could catch him.

Same way Brady was MVP and Gurley got OPOY last year.

Reckon Nagy will be the COTY.

But that's not really the same at all given they play different positions.

Mahomes and Brees are both QB's, so they can be directly compared. The MVP elect also was the lead on the most dynamic and number one offense in the league - granted NO were second though.

They play different positions but both play exclusively on the offence so they compete for both awards and the best should be the same. If that's your issue though a better example is 2011, Rodgers got MVP and Brees got OPOY, or 2008 where Manning got MVP and Brees got OPOY.

I just watched parts of the Pro Bowl skills show and I'm genuinly baffled right now. I've never watched it before so didn't know what to expect but who thought water bucket carrying and dodge ball were good ideas for an event like that? Might as well have a hot dog eating contest while they're at it.

How do they work it out? That seems really strange.

Gurley James and Mayfield all valid calls.

Think Luck is some distance ahead of Watt.

And there’s a couple good candidates ahead of Carroll although I agree he did a great job.

Not sure McVay should get it, I’d make a case and say they did everything they were expected to do?

For me COTY is an award for the best coach which to me means someone who excelled beyond expectations. Otherwise coaches like BB would win it most years.

In that context that’s why I take Reich. Although Nagy is a good shout too.

As a recent UK based NFL convert I want to know if the Pro Bowl is taken seriously or cared about. No posts here so far on it.

Its generally viewed as a distant afterthought where most fans are fixated on the Super Bowl and the players at the Pro Bowl are basically on a fun post-season holiday with their families.

For years the players only cared because it was a free trip to Hawaii for their immediate family. Bringing the PB to the continental US was the best move but it's still a pointless competition that even the players don't really care for. Many get a decent bonus clause triggered in their contracts and thus don't mind the selection. Good bragging rights I suppose.

Just watched one drive but won't waste my time on it any further. The "pass rush" tells you all you need to know about it.

When is it the state final?

I don't know what it's called, so that's probably poorly worded. Basically the main final of the amateur game is what I'm after. And is it televised in the UK?

Not taken seriously. Players don't want to risk hurting themselves, which is fair enough.
