Right so there are 6 playoff teams in the AFC. The winners of each division are seeded 1-4 based on their record. Those 4 are
New England (12-4)
Denver (12-4)
Pittsburgh (11-5)
Indianapolis (11-5)
New England beat Denver head to head so they get #1 and Denver gets #2. Pittsburgh beat Indianapolis head to head they get #3 and Indianapolis gets #4. Then spots 5 and 6 are filled by the 2 best teams who didn't win their division. These are called wild cards. This year we have Cincinnati (10-5-1) at #5 and Baltimore (10-6) at #6.
Now obviously with 6 teams they can't all play on the first week, so the top 2 seeds get a week off and automatically advance into the 2nd round as a reward for their performance. Then seed 3 hosts seed 6 and seed 4 hosts seed 5. This year that means Pittsburgh hosts Baltimore at 8 pm on Saturday and Indianapolis hosts Cincinnati at 1 pm on Sunday. Those games (like all playoff games) are straight knockouts.
So after this upcoming weekend we will have 4 teams left. The top 2 seeds (NE and DEN) plus the two winners of this weekend. We don't know which seeds will advance, it could be 3/4, 3/5, 4/6, 5/6. But no matter what New England gets the lowest seeded team at home and Denver gets the highest seeded team at home. (low seed is actually higher numbers here and vice versa, to add to confusion)
Denver can't get the lowest seeded team next week, which is #6 Baltimore. New England can't get the highest seeded next week, which is #3 Pittsburgh. So if Pittsburgh wins, that's who Denver is hosting. If Baltimore wins, Denver hosts whoever wins the Sunday game.
